Padma Awardee Monk Accused Of Rape, Abortion, Threats By Bengal Woman
Kolkata: A woman in West Bengal has accused Padma Shri awardee monk Swami Pradiptananda, popularly known as Kartik Maharaj, of raping her on multiple occasions since 2013 on the pretext of offering her a job at a school. The monk, who is associated with Bharat Sevashram Sangha's Beldanga unit in the state's Murshidabad district, however, alleged a conspiracy to "malign his name and fame". Maharaj was among this year's recipients of the Padma Shri award - the fourth highest civilian award - that is given for distinguished service. The case against him comes against the backdrop of a political showdown in the state over another rape case involving a law student, by students and a staff member at her college in Kolkata. These incidents also follow last year's rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital that had triggered nationwide protests. In her complaint with Nabagram police earlier this week, the woman alleged Maharaj had promised her a job at Chanak Adivasi Abasik Balika Vidyalaya - one of the ashram's schools - when the duo met in December 2012. The survivor said she was also accommodated at the school hostel in January 2013, with an assurance that she would soon be hired. "However, he would almost everyday take me to a room on the fifth floor of the premises and rape me," she said in her complaint written in Bengali. "On one occasion, Maharaj summoned me and asked me to stay at his ashram for five days. He raped me here as well multiple times. He then asked me to return home and promised to send me money every month," she added. The survivor said that after she got pregnant in 2013, the accused, along with some school staff, took her to a private nursing facility in Berhampore for an abortion. "He threatened me when I opposed the idea. In the presence of two (school) staff members, he spoke to a doctor at the nursing home and forced me to undergo an abortion," she alleged. The complainant said she hoped and waited to get hired but continued to be sexually assaulted by the accused. "He raped me across several branches of the ashram in Murshidabad. He kept promising me a job and I kept waiting. Eventually, I broke down mentally," she said. The woman said she reached out to the monk on June 12. "I called him and he asked me to wait at a particular spot in Berhampore at 7pm on June 13. He said two people would come to pick me up. When the two men arrived and I boarded their vehicle, they threatened me and asked me not to contact Maharaj again. They also abused me and pushed me from the vehicle," she alleged. The woman sought stringent action against the accused. Maharaj dismissed the woman's allegations against him. "Time will reveal everything. This is a conspiracy against me to malign my name and fame. There are so many women employed in our ashram and many female disciples. Ask them. Everyone will say we respect women like our mothers," he was quoted as saying by The Times Of India. On Friday, the alleged rape of a student by two other students and the staff member of South Calcutta Law College inside the institute sparked a massive political row between the ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the assembly elections next year. Four people, including the college security guard, have been arrested so far. A photograph of the prime accused - Manojit Mishra, a practicing lawyer - with TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee gave the BJP fresh ammunition to target the ruling party. The TMC, though, denied having any connection with the accused now and sought "severe punishment" if he is found guilty. The incident at the law college brought back the horrific memories of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor inside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata in August last year.

The father of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder victim spoke out against the alleged gangrape case in Kolkata's law college, expressing his frustration and disappointment with the recurring incidents of violence. He accused the government of having a significant role to play in preventing such incidents and that the accused should be severely punished. He said, 'Such incidents are happening again and again. After what happened with my daughter, many people came out on the streets in protest. Even after that, such incidents continue to occur. People inside the college are committing such incidents. The government has a significant role in this, which is why all these incidents are happening. All three people arrested are from the TMC, so this political party should ensure that such incidents do not happen again. The accused should be severely punished.' BJP West Bengal in a post on X alleged that the full form of TMC was Terror, Molester and Corruption. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shashi Panja on Friday expressed her distress over the gang rape of the student. Addressing a press conference, Shashi Panja said, 'There was an immediate postmortem and dissection to look at the names and the religion. You have to condemn the incident. You are now trying to show photographs. Trinamool Congress Student wing is not teaching the students to rape. The police took immediate action, and within 12 hours of the complaint, three people were caught. They are in custody, and the investigation is on. Their mobile phones have been seized, and the victim's statement has been taken. She has named the accused. It has been taken seriously. The BJP cannot even think the way Kolkata police swung into action. They started maligning since such swift action is missing in the BJP-ruled states. If they want to be in Bengal as a responsible Opposition, then they have to behave responsibly.' A female student was allegedly gang-raped inside a law college in Kolkata's Kasba on Wednesday evening. The police have arrested all three accused within 24 hours. The three accused, named as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), were former students or staff members of the same law college. According to the police, the accused named in the FIR will be produced before the A.C.J.M. of Alipore, South 24 Parganas, with a prayer to remand them to Police Custody for the purpose of a proper investigation into the case. The alleged sexual assault took place between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm on Wednesday within the law college premises. According to the official, one of the accused allegedly committed sexual assault, while the others were involved in the crime. The victim's family filed a police complaint against the accused, and the police have taken swift action in the matter. Two of the accused, Monojit Mishra and Zaib Ahmed, were arrested on Thursday, near Siddhartha Shankar Roy Sishu Udyan, close to Talbagan Crossing in Kolkata. Pramit Mukhopadhyay was arrested later the same night at his residence. The police have seized the mobile phones of all three accused. The official had visited the site and kept it under protection till they had done a forensic examination. They requested custody remand for further investigation. (ANI)

The trio were among 14 people who lost their lives. "I received a phone call from my friend saying that his cousin is no more. There was a fire and his body is at NRS. The family was still in shock and took a train to Kolkata. I reached the morgue to ensure that the process for his body release can at least start," Pandey said. Two of Patra's relatives reached the morgue by afternoon, but they wished not to speak to media. Like Pandey, many local friends came to help the families of those who choked to death at Hotel Rituraj on Tuesday. Kolkata resident Narayan Agarwal rushed to the spot after hearing about the fire where his friend Rajesh Kumar Santuka (61) checked in on Monday. Santuka's body was kept at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. A businessman by profession, Santuka reached the hotel at 6:30 pm after a busy day. He was due to catch a train from Howrah at 8:30 pm. "He went to the hotel to get some rest and was perhaps asleep when the fire broke out. I tried calling him, but his phone was switched off. That's when I rushed to the spot," his friend said. The family reached Kolkata from Cuttack early on Wednesday morning. On Monday, we went to offer prayers at a Shiv temple and distributed prasad among friends. Who knew it would be my last meeting with him?" While friends and families spoke about the probable activities of their loved ones on the fateful night, two friends, Siddharth Sharma and Sahil Agarwal, remembered the helplessness they felt at not being able to rescue their 29-year-old friend Niraj Kumar, who was inside the hotel. While Siddharth and Sahil were leaving the hotel to buy something, they detected smoke and stepped outside the hotel to assess the situation. They tried contacting their friend, who was inside at the time, but could not save him. His family members arrived in Kolkata to collect his body from RG Kar on Wednesday. Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape case has taken a new turn with the victim's father expressing strong dissatisfaction with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), pointing out inconsistencies in their investigative reports. A postgraduate trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. Sanjay Roy, a former police civic volunteer, was found guilty and was awarded life imprisonment till death. On Tuesday, the father of the victim who was brutally raped and murdered claimed that her mobile number was used after her death, pointing out inconsistencies in the investigative reports of the CBI. 'CBI has presented two drastically different reports in the Calcutta High Court and the Sealdah district Court. We will tell the High Court today that two different status reports are being presented. Even Supreme Court judges could not believe the gravity of the report submitted to them. He alleged that the CBI knows the identities of those involved in his daughter's rape and murder but is withholding key information. 'CBI knows the perpetrators behind the rape and murder of my daughter but it is not revealing the details…," he added. Following the Calcutta High Court's disapproval of the local police investigation, the case was reassigned to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Subsequently, the CBI apprehended multiple suspects, including the primary accused, Sanjay Roy, who received a conviction for the offence. Roy was arrested on August 10, a day after the 31-year-old medic's body was found in the seminar room of the hospital. He was declared guilty of sexually assaulting the doctor and throttling her to death, and was convicted under Sections 64, 66 and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The Supreme Court conducted proceedings in a suo motu case regarding the assault and murder of the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim's parents received legal representation from Senior Advocate Karuna Nundy.
