Selena Gomez's Early-Career Hit Earns Its First New Certification In A Decade

Selena Gomez & the Scene's 'Who Says' earns a new RIAA certification, reaching quadruple platinum ... More status with four million units moved in the U.S., a decade since its last award. UNIVERSAL CITY, CA - AUGUST 07: Singer/actress Selena Gomez arrives at the 2011 Teen Choice Awards held at the Gibson Amphitheatre on August 7, 2011 in Universal City, California. (Photo by) When Selena Gomez first launched her music career, she decided to go a different route than many other Disney stars. Instead of simply positioning herself as a solo singer, she fronted a group known as Selena Gomez & the Scene. That pop outfit only existed for a handful of years and hasn't released music in well over a decade, but during the time the musicians were together, they scored some big hits. Now, one of the group's most popular tracks has earned its first new Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certification in well over a decade. "Who Says" Hits Quadruple Platinum Status "Who Says" has been named a quadruple platinum single by the RIAA, which means it has shifted four million equivalent units in the United States alone. When the track was first certified, those numbers only included actual sales, but in the past several years, streaming activity has been added to the RIAA's methodology. That's how many artists continue to rack up wins these days. "Who Says" Last Earned a New Platinum Plaque a Decade Ago "Who Says" was first certified gold, the lowest status, in May 2011. A little more than a month later, it went platinum. Two years after that, it advanced to double and then triple platinum at the same time. "Who Says" had not earned a new certification since June 2013. Over more than a decade, the song racked up another million equivalent units. One of Selena Gomez & the Scene's Biggest Singles "Who Says" is now tied as Selena Gomez & the Scene's second-highest-certified song in America as it advances to quadruple platinum. At the four-times platinum level, it ties with "Naturally," which reached that position in July 2014. Only one tune from the band, "Love You Like a Love Song," has risen higher. That cut was pushed to six-times platinum in July 2024. The Band's Biggest Billboard Hot 100 Hit "Who Says" was released as the first single taken from Selena Gomez & the Scene's third and final album, When the Sun Goes Down. That project brought the group to a new high on the Billboard 200, where it peaked at No. 3. "Who Says" still stands as the band's loftiest placement on the Hot 100, as it topped out at No. 21.

Sabrina Carpenter Ties Her Own Biggest Song As She Scores New Platinum Plaques

Sabrina Carpenter earns 13 new RIAA certifications as hits like "Please Please Please" and "Taste" ... More soar, and she matches her own biggest song. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 05: Sabrina Carpenter attends the 2025 Met Gala Celebrating "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" at Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 05, 2025 in New York City. (Photo by) Americans have been listening to a lot of Sabrina Carpenter lately. The pop superstar finally broke into the top 40 world a little over a year ago, thanks to her album Short n' Sweet and the singles featured on it, such as "Espresso," "Taste," and "Please Please Please," among others. Carpenter had been making music for many years prior, but had to wait quite a while before she became a certified hitmaker. The Grammy winner recently earned multiple new certifications from the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), as many of her biggest songs scored new honors or snagged certifications for the very first time. 13 New Certifications for Sabrina Carpenter 13 of Carpenter's songs collected some love from the RIAA in late June. Seven of those tracks hit gold status, the lowest possible tier, which means they secured their first certifications. That roundup includes a mix of older tracks as well as some of her newer offerings, such as "Looking at Me," "Can't Blame a Girl for Trying," "Eyes Wide Open," "Don't Smile," "Dumb and Poetic," "Slim Pickins," and "Busy Woman," the focus track from the deluxe edition of Short n' Sweet. 'Bed Chem' Becomes a Multi-Platinum Smash Several of Carpenter's biggest tunes from Short n' Sweet advanced again to multi-platinum status. "Bed Chem" pushed from platinum to double platinum, while "Taste" inched one rung higher and is now a triple platinum smash. Fellow tracks "Sue Me," "Good Graces," and "Juno" became platinum successes for the first time. "Please Please Please" Ties 'Espresso' "Please Please Please," one of Carpenter's biggest singles so far, is now a five-times platinum blockbuster. Since it was certified triple platinum in December of last year, it has racked up another two million additional equivalent units, with that sum spread out between pure purchases and streaming activity. "Please Please Please" is now tied with "Espresso," both from Short n' Sweet, as Carpenter's highest-certified tracks. "Espresso" hasn't added to its total since December 2024, so the RIAA could increase its sum again soon.

Donny Osmond's Biggest Song Advances Yet Again

Donny Osmond's 'I'll Make a Man Out of You' from Mulan is now triple platinum, making it his ... More most-certified track, as it surpasses all his other solo hits combined. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - APRIL 29: Entertainer Donny Osmond reacts onstage after the Las Vegas Raiders' 90th overall pick was announced during round three of the 2022 NFL Draft on April 29, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by) After finding fame with his family, Donny Osmond enjoyed a hugely successful solo career in the music world beginning in the early 1970s and continuing for well over a decade. During those years, he scored more than a dozen hits on the Hot 100 and transitioned from a teen superstar into a respected singer and performer. Osmond isn't racking up smashes like he used to, but people are still listening to his catalog. Amazingly, his biggest commercial success in the United States when looking at certified units moved is a tune that some might not even realize he sang, as it wasn't his face that delivered the track to the public. 'I'll Make a Man Out of You' by Donny Osmond Osmond lent his vocals to the Disney film Mulan, where he voiced the character of Captain Li Shang — but only when singing. Actor BD Wong provided the character's speaking voice, while Osmond performed his tracks, most notably 'I'll Make a Man Out of You.' That cut has long stood as Osmond's highest-certified song by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), and it has added to its already impressive total yet again. Donny Osmond's Biggest Hit Song The RIAA has certified 'I'll Make a Man Out of You' triple platinum. The tune has now shifted three million equivalent units in the United States between sales and streaming activity. The song earns its first new certification in more than two years, as it was named double platinum in March 2023. Donny Osmond's Six Other Gold Records Under his solo name, Osmond has seen half a dozen other tracks earn certifications from the RIAA, but so far, all of them — 'The Twelfth of Never,' 'Hey Girl,' 'Puppy Love,' 'Go Away Little Girl,' 'Sweet and Innocent,' and 'I'm Leaving It (All Up to You)' with his sister Marie — have only been certified gold, which means they each moved 500,000 equivalent units. None of those tunes have snagged a certification from the music industry organization since the 1970s, which means they all sold half a million copies during their heyday. One Song Stands Out as Donny Osmond's Most Successful 'I'll Make a Man Out of You' has now moved as many equivalent units in the U.S. as all of Osmond's other hits combined. It is Osmond's only track that has added to its total this millennium, and the tune remains a standout from the Mulan soundtrack more than a quarter century after it was first released.

Whitney Houston Breaks Her Tie With Bob Marley, Journey And Garth Brooks

Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard soundtrack has been certified 19-times platinum by the RIAA, making ... More it the fifteenth-highest-certified album in U.S. history. LAS VEGAS, NV ? SEPTEMBER 15: Singer Whitney Houston is seen performing on stage during the 2004 World Music Awards at the Thomas and Mack Center on September 15, 2004 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by) By the time Whitney Houston released the soundtrack that accompanied her movie The Bodyguard, she was already one of the biggest musical stars on the planet. She had spent the second half of the 1980s and the early 1990s racking up smash after smash, including nine No. 1 hits on the Hot 100. The full-length collection that accompanied the film shot her into the stratosphere, becoming not just another commercial success but a certified blockbuster. Decades after its release, it remains Houston's bestselling album, and as it earns a new honor from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the title advances again among history's biggest musical projects. The Bodyguard Soundtrack Earns a New Platinum Award The Bodyguard soundtrack has been certified 19-times platinum, which means it has now moved 19 million equivalent units in the United States alone. That sum is split between pure purchases and streaming activity, and it is much larger when taking into account consumption from dozens of other nations. The majority of that figure is made up of actual sales, since the RIAA only began including streams several years ago. The full-length last earned an award in November 2017, when it advanced to 18-times platinum — 18 years after it hit 17-times platinum status. The Fifteenth-Highest-Certified Album The Bodyguard soundtrack now ranks as the fifteenth-highest-certified album in U.S. history. Before this latest honor, Houston's behemoth was tied with four other titles for that spot, as they all stood at 18-times platinum status, and those collections have been pushed downward for the moment. Steady with 18 million certified units moved are Legend by Bob Marley and the Wailers, No Fences by Garth Brooks, Appetite for Destruction by Guns N' Roses, and Greatest Hits by Journey. Whitney Houston Lands Behind Green Day, Metallica and Shania Twain Sitting just ahead of the Bodyguard soundtrack with 20 million units — what is often called double diamond — are Dookie by Green Day, Metallica's self-titled album, and Come On Over by Shania Twain. Those three projects are matched as the twelfth-most-certified efforts in America. If none of them change their numbers anytime soon, Houston could eventually catch up. The Eagles and Michael Jackson Continue to Lead The most certified album of all time remains Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 by the Eagles. That compilation has moved 38 million equivalent copies. Thriller by Michael Jackson is the only other title to push past triple diamond status, as it has moved 34 million copies in the United States alone.

Whitney Houston Scores Multiple New Platinum Hits

Whitney Houston earns double-digit new RIAA certifications, including platinum plaques for 'Count On ... More Me' and 'Run to You,' decades after their original releases. FRANCE - MAY 18: Whitney Houston Performs In Paris Bercy On May 18th, 1988 In Paris,France (Photo by Frederic REGLAIN/Gamma-Rapho via Getty Images) More than a decade after her passing, Whitney Houston continues to collect new awards and certifications for the music she left behind. People in the United States have not stopped listening to the legendary vocalist, and as more time passes, she racks up more honors. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) recently handed down double-digit new certifications to Houston's catalog, as both singles and one of the bestselling albums of all time added to their totals. Among that group, two of the late superstar's tracks became platinum wins for the first time, decades after their release. 'Count on Me' and 'Run to You' Go Platinum Both 'Count On Me,' a collaboration with CeCe Winans, and 'Run to You' are newly platinum songs by Houston. That means they have officially moved one million equivalent units throughout the years, between both sales and streaming activity. 'Run to You' was named a gold win after it hit half a million units in March 2019. 'Count On Me' had to wait much longer to double its sum and move from gold to platinum status. The duet with Winans was certified gold in 1996, so it took almost 30 years for it to shift another half-million copies. The Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale's Smashes 'Run to You' served as the fourth official single from The Bodyguard soundtrack. It followed top 10 smashes 'I Will Always Love You,' 'I'm Every Woman,' and 'I Have Nothing,' becoming the last charting tune from that collection. Just a few years later, Houston was promoting the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, which produced several other huge wins, including 'Count On Me.' Both were chart wins, but it's taken decades for them to become platinum successes. Whitney Houston's Other New RIAA Certifications Eight other songs by Houston earned new certifications from the RIAA at the same time as 'Run to You' and 'Count On Me.' 'I Will Always Love You' advanced to 11-times platinum after becoming a diamond smash in 2022. Houston is likely headed for another diamond win, as 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)' is now up to 8-times platinum, meaning it has moved eight million equivalent units. Other beloved songs from the superstar increased their totals, including 'I Have Nothing' (4-times platinum), 'Higher Love' with Kygo and 'How Will I Know' (both 3-times platinum), and 'Saving All My Love for You,' 'My Love Is Your Love,' and 'Heartbreak Hotel,' which all surged from platinum to double platinum.
