East Cleveland mayor Brandon King sentenced
[WATCH: In the video player above, watch as the former mayor is greeted by family and supporters immediately following his sentencing.] CLEVELAND (WJW) — East Cleveland Mayor Brandon King was sentenced to three years of probation on Wednesday and ordered to pay more than $27,000 in restitution after he was found guilty on public corruption charges in May. In addition, the former mayor was ordered to receive random drug testing, find full-time employment, and complete 100 hours of community service. He is also disqualified from holding a position of public office. King, who had been mayor since 2016, is accused of pushing more than $75,000 in city money to businesses owned by himself or his family. RITZ cracker recall over potentially life-threatening error: FDA He had previously been found guilty on charges including theft in office, having unlawful interest in a public contract and soliciting improper compensation. Prior to sentencing, King joined others in the courtroom and held hands in prayer. Prosecutors requested a prison sentence due to the 'seriousness' of the crimes and said King used his position of power to facilitate some of the offenses. Convicted killer free after toilet tunnel escape 'He did hold a position of public trust in East Cleveland, not just any position, the highest position, and he betrayed that trust,' said prosecutors in court on Wednesday. King's defense attorney said King planned to file an appeal, therefore he would not be commenting. 'The purpose of sentencing is to protect the public, it's our belief that a prison sentence is not necessary to protect the public. It's our belief that Mr. King not being able to run for office is a punishment,' said King's attorney. Tuesday, East Cleveland councilman Ernest Smith was also sentenced in the corruption case, receiving three years probation. Smith had previously been found guilty on charges including theft in office, theft, soliciting improper compensation and misuse of credit cards. The theft reportedly amounted to more than $13,500. The recall alert goes on to explain that all outer cartons of the cracker sandwiches are labeled correctly and provide an allergen advisory statement indicating that the product 'contains peanuts.' However, the individually wrapped packs are of concern. 'People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts may risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions by consuming this product,' reads the FDA alert. The FDA says anyone with peanut allergies should avoid eating the affected cracker sandwiches and discard them. Customers can also contact customer service representatives at Mondelēz. Cartons with possibly incorrectly labeled individual wrapping include 8-pack, 20-pack and 40-pack cartons of RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches and 20-pack cartons of RITZ Filled Cracker Sandwich Variety Pack. The best when used by dates range from November 1, 2025 to January 22, 2026. They were sold nationwide. 'Corrective actions are being taken to help ensure this issue does not recur,' stated the company in the notice shared by the US Food and Drug Administration. There were no labeling mistakes on cartons of RITZ Cheese Cracker Sandwiches. More Trending As of Tuesday, there were no reports of consumers getting sick from the crackers. Costumers with a peanut allergy should not eat the crackers and instead throw them away, and contact the company with any questions on the recall. Mondelez Global LLC states that it is 'leading the future of snacking with iconic global and local brands' like RITZ, OREO and Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate. The recall comes just a few weeks after the American supermarket chain Meijer recalled certain packages of Frederik's Dark Chocolate Almonds because they could contain cashews, which were not listed on the labels.
