Tesla invited influencers to test its robotaxi. Here's what they had to say

For now, the test vehicles are operating in a limited area. — Reuters AUSTIN: A handpicked group of passengers invited for early rides from Tesla Inc's autonomous, nearly driverless ride-hailing service seemed to like it. But video some posted to social media suggests the automaker's system struggles to comply with traffic laws. Some passengers were wowed by the car's ability to slow for speed bumps, an ambulance or to avoid hitting a pedestrian. One said it did just as well after sundown as during the day. Another was wild about what it may mean for the Austin-based automaker's future. "I was completely mind blown that the same car I can buy today starting at around $38k – which also happens to be the best selling car in the world – just did paid driverless rides around Austin, TX without someone behind the steering wheel and pedal," X user @farzyness posted after three rides in one of the Model Y vehicles being used as robotaxis – which actually start at more than US$50,000 (RM 212,199) , according to "The implications from this are far-reaching and very disruptive. This breaks transportation." He was among a handful of online Tesla influencers – fans who post regularly about the company on social media– who received invitations to download the Robotaxi app and try the company's service Sunday in Austin. It's not available yet to the general public. Rival Waymo already has deployed driverless taxis in Austin, Los Angeles, San Diego and other cities using a different technology that allowed it to get to market faster. It recently completed its 10 millionth paid ride and has begun testing in San Antonio and other cities. Other companies also are testing in Austin. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made the robotaxi program a priority, and any trouble with it could be highly damaging to the company's stock price, which had tumbled 20% this year. Last Sunday's limited rollout appeared to give it a boost, though, with the share price rocketing at Monday's opening bell. It closed up more than 8% and was up slightly in after-hours trading. Also among the passengers was Rob Maurer, an investor whose live ride video shows the Model Y he's in entering an intersection in a left-turn-only lane. The Tesla hesitates to make the turn, swerves right and continues into an unoccupied lane meant for traffic moving in the opposite direction. A honking horn can be heard as the robotaxi returns to the correct lane over a double-yellow line, a violation. Other riders shared videos of Tesla robotaxis exceeding the posted speed limit by 4 or 5 mph (6.43kph or 8kph). For now, the test vehicles are operating in a limited area. The current geofence area goes as far south as Ben White Boulevard and US 290, west to Texas State Loop 1, north to Cesar Chavez Street and east to US 183. According to CEO Elon Musk, Sunday's trial had a flat fee of US$4.20 (RM18) for the select group. It was unclear if Tesla paid for the influencers' trips to Austin, their robotaxi fares or for social media posts about the service. The company hasn't responded to requests for comment. "As an Early Access Rider, you can be among the first to use our new Robotaxi App and experience a ride within our geofenced area in Austin," the invitations said. "Through this exclusive preview, you'll have the opportunity to provide valuable feedback." Though there was no one behind the wheel, information sent with the invitations indicated front-seat human safety monitors – Tesla employees riding with Sunday's invitees – would be subject to the same restrictions as drivers of Tesla models with the so-called Full Self-Driving system. That means the cabin camera was watching the monitor's eyes to make sure they're on the road and, presumably, warn them if they're not. A few of the videos posted Sunday showed monitors turned around to look at a passenger in the back seats. – San Antonio Express-News/Tribune News Service

Hamza Igamane's Rangers transfer value debated as £6m Celtic man triggers stick or twist dilemma

The stakes are high and it's Game On for our top team as they race through the burning issues Can Rangers new era end Celtic dominance? | How much for Hamza? | Can Celts trust Trusty? - Game On Hamza Igamane appears to be edging towards the Ibrox exit door - but just how much is the Rangers sensation worth? The Moroccan striker's stock has exploded after an eye-catching debut campaign in Scotland. Unearthed last summer from AS Far Rabat for a bargain £1.7million, Gers could rake in one of their biggest transfer sales for the 22-year-old as Lille target a big-money swoop. ‌ If you listen to supporters online, then the Light Blues should be holding out for £15-20m. But is that realistic? Record Sport's chief chinwagers, Graeme Young and Ryan McDonald, dissected the in-demand frontman's soaring value in this week's episode of Game On - available on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts. ‌ The future of Celtic stopper Auston Trusty also comes under the spotlight, while the lads discuss whether Hearts will ever be able to break the Old Firm's grim 40-year duopoly. There's all this and more as we pore over all the big issues in Scottish sport and beyond - in handy bite-sized chunks. You can watch the full podcast in the player above, or listen here. How much is Hamza Igamane really worth? RM: I think anything upwards of £15million would be great business for Rangers. What did they sign him for? Around £1.7m? That would be an incredible markup. I think this rebuild is going to be a slow process, so if you can get that amount of money in during the first window, then you've got to take it. There are no untouchables in that Rangers squad just now. GY: Not even Nico Raskin? RM: No. He's got two years left on his contract. If he doesn't sign a new contract, then Rangers need to cash in. Look what happened with Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, John Lundstram and even Borna Barisic. Rangers have got shrewd owners in place now. They need to follow Celtic's act by cashing in when the time is right. ‌ GY: I've got to give a shout out to Record Sport's columnist Tam McManus because he went studs up and suggested that Igamane doesn't really do it for him. I can just use what Tam said! Do you think he's a player where you can make a six minute, streets won't forget, highlights reel? Does he do it in complete games and is this actually really good business for Rangers' new owners straight away? RM: I think he had a purple patch, didn't he? I remember that hat-trick at Easter Road. He was in phenomenal form at that point. He did fall out of the team under Barry Ferguson, especially towards the end. I'm not sure the reasons for that. He was played out of position at times as well and clearly has bundles of potential. On the basis of what he's shown in his first season when he has played, I think you've got to take the £15m. And if they can sneak in a sell-on fee, which you've seen Celtic profit from, then even better business for Rangers. GY: The one thing I've been really impressed with Igamane is not even his goals. You know when he takes the ball into his feet, takes it up the line, wins throw ins. He's a proper talent. I think the next manager who looks after him is going to have a proper job to bring it out every week. But if you do, like you say, the sell-on fee could be really important for them as well. ‌ Should Celtic stick or twist with Auston Trusty? GY: Auston Trusty is probably the most polarising player within himself to play for Celtic in recent memory. John Mjalby esque European level performances. Elite level player in some games like Atlanta away and Bayern Munich at home. But he's struggled mightily dealing with the more physical style of player that you come up against in Scotland. Industrial strikers, we'll call them. That's part of Scottish football you have to do both. Would you cash in on him to open up the potential to find a real partner for CCV? Fans don't believe Liam Scales is that guy. RM: For me, he reminds me very much of Kelvin Wilson, who I actually just interviewed earlier this week. Kelvin took a season to find his feet, he was in and out and had a couple of injuries. The second season, he really established himself. It took one performance for him to say, 'this is the turning point, I'm now a Celtic player'. He became a mainstay in the famous Champions League last 16 run. I think with Auston Trusty, if no offers come in, I think he's worth a second season. You can't write off a £6m signing. He's a USA international, he gets on well with Cameron Carter-Vickers. He's proven at Champions League level, but the rough nature of Scottish football... I remember that Dundee and there were a few lip-reading experts who decoded what Brendan Rodgers said about him on the touchline! ‌ GY: 'Weak as powder?' RM: I think that's one way to say it! He has a lot to prove. I think he'll know that as well. Unless Celtic can recoup their money this season, I would stick with him. I do think Celtic will bring in defensive reinforcements. CCV is clearly the first-choice at centre-back, but they do need to find a solid number one. GY: When you factor in Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke are both likely to leave. I think we've argued the case that Trusty has a lot more ability and performed at an elite level. But the issue is you can't trust him domestically. Just talking about finding bargains, they really need to find that partner for Carter-Vickers and maybe that will happen over the summer."

China's Xiaomi receives almost 300,000 SUV pre-orders in minutes

A Xiaomi YU7 car at a Xiaomi store in Nanjing, eastern China on June 26, 2025. The company's electric vehicle division said on its official Weibo account that there had been 289,000 pre-orders for the five-seater YU7, priced from 253,500 yuan (RM149,454), within the first hour of sales. — AFP BEIJING: Chinese electric vehicle maker Xiaomi received almost 300,000 pre-orders within an hour for its first sport utility vehicles in what the company said was a "miraculous" moment for the industry. Lei Jun, founder and CEO of the electronics-turned-car company, said he was astonished by the reaction from customers. "My goodness, in just two minutes, we received 196,000 paid pre-orders and 128,000 lock-in orders," Lei said in a video distributed after the vehicle's launch on Thursday night. "We may be witnessing a miracle in China's automotive industry." The company's electric vehicle division said later on its official Weibo account that there had been 289,000 pre-orders for the five-seater YU7, priced from 253,500 yuan (RM 149,454 or about US$35,000), within the first hour of sales. Xiaomi's Hong Kong-listed shares soared 8% at one point before paring their gains but ending at a record high. The Beijing-based commercial tech giant made its first foray into car-making with its SU7 EV model last year, part of a broader industry push to boost domestic consumption. Initial enthusiasm for intelligent driving features in such vehicles was tempered by the fatal crash of a Xiaomi SU7 in March. The vehicle had been in assisted driving mode just before it crashed, killing three students. Premier Li Qiang used the World Economic Forum in Tianjin this week to outline China's ambition to become a "major consumption powerhouse", emphasising policies to stimulate demand for high-value goods such as electric vehicles. – AFP

HYBE Surprises Staff With Jaw-Dropping Bonus As BTS Completes Military Service

Last Updated: BTS's agency, HYBE's stock had dropped during the septet's military service, but is now rising again after the band's comeback. BTS members V, Jungkook, RM, Jin, J Hope, Suga and Jimin have all finished their military service. This has brought great excitement not only among fans, aka ARMYs, but also to their company, HYBE. The agency's stock had dropped during the septet's service but is now rising again after the band's comeback. To celebrate this good news, HYBE decided to give a big bonus to their full-time employees worldwide. Each employee will receive 20 restricted stock units (RSUs), and at today's value, these stocks are worth 6.21 million KRW, which is close to Rs 3 Lakh. As per the Seoul Economic Daily, HYBE has not announced the exact date when employees can use or sell the new RSUs. Interestingly, this is the third time the company has given such a massive reward to its team. In December 2024, HYBE provided 16,396 treasury shares as RSUs to 34 of its executives and staff. Just last month, the company granted another 12,142 shares to 32 employees. Speaking about the latest bonus, a HYBE representative explained, 'This RSU grant plan is intended to share the fruits of our collective efforts for the company's growth." It's not just HYBE employees who will benefit from BTS members returning from military service. As the members step back into the spotlight, companies connected to them, directly or indirectly, are also expected to see better business, among them is Mirae Asset Securities. A spokesperson stated, 'With BTS's return, there is a possibility of increased sales in business divisions with high profit margins." BTS's next project is expected to push HYBE's stock even higher. This means the bonus given to employees could be worth much more later. The RSUs given are not immediate cash. They are granted now but can only be used after a certain period of time. So, while each unit is currently valued at 6.21 million KRW, the final amount employees receive could be much more if the stock continues to rise. After Suga completed his military service last week, fans are now eagerly waiting to see him back on stage with the rest of the BTS members, V, Jungkook, RM, Jin, J Hope and Jimin. First Published:
