RM103,000 Criminal Breach of Trust: Clerk claims trial

Kota Kinabalu: A 37-year-old accountant clerk claimed trial to three counts of committing criminal breach of trust involving a sum of RM103,351.36. Brandon Ng Jia Lie made the plea after the charges were read before three Sessions Court Judges, Hurman Hussain, Elsie Primus and Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim, Friday. Advertisement On the first count, Ng is accused of breaching the trust given to him as an accountant clerk by depositing two cheques amounting to RM6,462.50 belonged to Syarikat Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd, into his bank account for his own use. The alleged incident took place between Nov 16, 2021 and Dec 31, 2021 at the Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad, here. On the second count, he allegedly committed criminal breach of trust by depositing another eight cheques amounting to RM64,169.26 belonged to Syarikat Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd, into his bank account for his own use, between Feb 29, 2022 and Dec 29, 2022 at the same place. On the third count, Ng is accused of committing the offence by depositing five cheques amounting to RM32,719.60 belonged to Syarikat Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd, into his bank account for his own use at the same place between Feb 3, 2023 and July 27, 2023. The offence, under Section 408 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of between one and 14 years, and whipping, and liable to fine, on conviction. The court set Aug 12, this year, and released on bail of RM5,000 in two local sureties for each charge. Ng was also ordered to report to the nearest police station every first and third Friday of the month and his passport, if any, to be impounded by the court until the disposal of his case. Earlier, the prosecution objected to bail Ng on the grounds that he has three charges against him but if the court were to grant bail, there were several conditions to be imposed on him. Ng, who was not represented, asked for bail to be given to him saying that it was his first court case and if he was denied bail, there's no one else to financially provide for his family since his wife is a full-time housewife. He also claimed that he has no authority to sign or approve any cheque. Ng requested for the amount of bail to be between RM2,000 and RM3,000, adding that he would apply for the legal service from the National Legal Aid Foundation. Mara to enhance collaboration with Cambridge University
LONDON: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) will be enhancing its collaboration with Cambridge University, says Datuk Dr Ashraf Wadi Dusuki. The Mara chairman said he had a discussion with the university's representatives, who were told 12 Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) taught the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) syllabus. "Student performance was very encouraging, with 147 scoring straight As. "We (Mara) also have a comprehensive educational ecosystem. "They (Cambridge representatives) were very excited when we shared these facts. "Our focus is not only sending students overseas but to ensure a path for them to enter Ivy League universities," he told reporters in London on Sunday (June 1). Ashraf Wadi is in London as part of the delegation for Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's working visit to Britain. He said Cambridge representatives have also agreed to go to MRSM to give students a taste of the Cambridge orientation. "In that sense, students can be prepared early," he said. Mara has also agreed to conduct joint research and co-funding with Cambridge in areas such as quantum technology and artificial intelligence, said Ashraf Wadi. "For example, we will send five lecturers for master's and doctorate courses in Cambridge and the university will sponsor another five," he said. He added that Mara has also agreed to conduct leadership professional courses to produce professors and lecturers for academia and also for industries. "The training module will be developed by Cambridge and will take one month," he said. On another matter, Ashraf Wadi said three top universities in the United Kingdom have agreed to offer discounts on tuition fees for Mara-sponsored students, namely Warwick University, Birmingham University and Edinburgh University. "Both Warwick University and Birmingham University have agreed to offer a 20% discount on tuition fees and Edinburgh University offered 10%. He said this could save Mara about RM103,000 per student over the span of three years. He added that with the savings, Mara could look into increasing allowances. "I met with students in Sheffield and Manchester and the feedback that I got is that their cost of living has increased significantly," he said.

Two nabbed, untaxed booze worth RM100,000 seized in Penang raid
GEORGE TOWN: Marine police arrested two men, one of them a foreign national, for possessing untaxed alcohol worth more than RM100,000. Region 1 commander Asst Comm Rusley Chi Ari said the duo was held during an operation with North Seberang Prai police headquarters in the Tasek Gelugor area from Sunday to Monday (May 25 to 26). "Based on intelligence about the distribution of alcoholic drinks in the North Seberang Prai district, Penang's Marine Intelligence Unit raided an unregistered warehouse in Kampung Selamat, Tasek Gelugor on Monday," he said in a statement on Tuesday (May 27). He said police seized 110 cartons of beverages with 12% alcohol content, 50 cartons of beer with 13.8% alcohol, and a remote control device believed to be linked to operations at the premises. He said the overall value of the confiscated goods, inclusive of tax, is RM103,804.80. "The suspects, a 58-year-old local and a 36-year-old foreign national, have been remanded until June 3 to assist in the investigation," he said. Soon Koh: Continued attention needed to address water, infrastructure needs in Bawang Assan
While thanking the state government and relevant ministries for their efforts thus far, Soon Koh says Sibu's water supply problems stem from its geographical location in low-lying peat swamp areas. KUCHING (May 22): Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has called for continued attention to address the persistent water supply issues and infrastructure needs affecting his constituency. While thanking the state government and relevant ministries for their efforts thus far, he said Sibu's water supply problems stem from its geographical location in low-lying peat swamp areas. 'Because of that, over time, water pipes have sunk several metres underground, making them prone to frequent leaks and bursts, leading to repeated supply disruptions,' he said when debating the motion of appreciation on the Governor's opening speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) today. He also acknowledged that while water supply is primarily a federal responsibility, funding delays and slow implementation have compounded the problem. 'People in general are not aware that water supply is very much the federal government's responsibility, but the state government has recently stepped in to help mitigate the issue,' he said. In this regard, he expressed his appreciation to Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi for his active involvement in addressing water supply issues in Sibu. Turning to road infrastructure, Wong noted the recent completion of the Jalan Sungai Bidut/Kampung Tutus/Kampung Sebedil/Kampung Bungan Kecil road project (Package A) which cost RM103 million. He said planning is underway for the Jalan Rantau Panjang/Rassau road project in Batang Igan estimated at RM254 million, and maintenance works for Jalan Kampung Sebedil worth RM500,000. 'Additionally, several road proposals have been submitted under the 13th Malaysia Plan, including the RM435 million Jalan Sungai Bidut/Batang Lassa/Kadang Sawai Jaya road, and the SK Tanjung Panasu bypass to Aup/Rantau Panjang estimated at RM5 million,' he said. bawang assan DUN wong soon koh

Saifuddin urges Rafizi to focus on PKR campaign, not potential Sarawak ban

Former PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, a close friend of Rafizi, said personal concerns, like potential travel bans, should not distract from the campaign. Rafizi made the comment during a reformist event in Kuching, recalling previous restrictions before becoming a minister. Separately, Saifuddin announced the launch of three new General Operations Force (PGA) battalions: 21 in Keningau, 22 in Kunak, and 23 in Sri Aman, bringing the total to 23 nationwide with 12,000 personnel. He said this reflects the government's commitment to national security.
