RM260m energy projects boost power supply for 60,000 in Sabah, Labuan

KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has approved more than RM260 million for seven energy projects in Sabah and Labuan, targeting improved power supply for over 60,000 users. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof announced the initiative, emphasising its role in strengthening energy resilience under the Malaysia MADANI agenda. The projects, managed by the Sabah Electricity Supply Special Project Team (PPKBES), focus on upgrading substations, expanding grid networks, and enhancing safety systems in key areas such as Sipitang, Beaufort, Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu, Ranau, Sandakan, and Labuan. Fadillah highlighted the completion of critical infrastructure, including a new gas-insulated switchgear at the Kota Kinabalu Main Intake Substation (PMU KKBU), which will support reliable electricity supply to the Kota Kinabalu International Airport. A major milestone is the seven-kilometre transmission line from Menggalong PMU to the Sipitang–Lawas border, finished in September last year. This line will enable Sabah to import 30 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Sarawak once Sarawak Energy completes its segment by September. The infrastructure is part of the ASEAN Power Grid, facilitating cross-border energy sharing among Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak, and the Philippines, with a capacity of up to 500 MW. Fadillah stressed that these upgrades reflect the federal government's commitment to modernising Sabah and Labuan's energy infrastructure. The handover ceremony at PMU KKBU was attended by PETRA Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and secretary-general Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli. - Bernama

Over RM260 Mln For Seven Energy Projects To Benefit 60,000 In Sabah, Labuan

KOTA KINABALU, July 14 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has allocated over RM260 million for seven energy projects across Sabah and Labuan, aimed at improving electricity supply for 60,434 users, said Deputy Prime Minister and PETRA Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He said the projects, implemented by the Sabah Electricity Supply Special Project Team (PPKBES), involve substation upgrades, expanded grid connectivity and improved safety monitoring systems in Sipitang, Beaufort, Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu, Ranau, Sandakan and Labuan. 'These initiatives have strengthened transmission and distribution infrastructure in Sabah and Labuan, ensuring a more reliable power supply, reflecting the federal government's commitment to energy resilience in line with the Malaysia MADANI agenda,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after officiating the handover of the projects at the Kota Kinabalu Main Intake Substation (PMU KKBU) today. Also present were PETRA Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and PETRA secretary-general Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli. Fadillah said the PMU KKBU project includes a new gas-insulated switchgear and transformer facility to replace outdated systems, along with new cabling to enhance electricity supply to Kota Kinabalu International Airport. He also highlighted the completion of a seven-kilometre transmission line from the Menggalong PMU to the Sipitang-Lawas border, one of PPKBES' high-impact projects, which was completed on Sept 2 last year. The line will allow the import of 30 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Sarawak once Sarawak Energy completes its section in September. 'This grid is designed to carry up to 500 MW and is a key component of the ASEAN Power Grid, connecting Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and the Philippines for sustainable cross-border energy sharing,' he noted. -- BERNAMA

Over 60,000 in Sabah, Labuan enjoy improved electricity from Petra projects

Published on: Monday, July 14, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 14, 2025 Text Size: Fadillah and others visit the KKBU project. More than 60,000 electricity users in Sabah and Labuan are now enjoying a more stable power supply following the completion of seven energy projects worth over RM260 million by the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra). The projects, which include grid upgrades, new substation connections and enhanced safety systems, cover areas from Tanjung Aru to Ranau, Batu Sapi and Labuan. Deputy Prime Minister and Petra Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof officiated the handover ceremony at the Kota Kinabalu Bulk Supply Substation (KKBU), part of a special federal initiative known as PPKBES. The KKBU project, under the 10th Malaysia Plan, replaces outdated systems and now supports 11,452 users including those at Kota Kinabalu International Airport, with enhanced capacity and newer gas-insulated switchgear and transformers. Among the other completed works is the RM34.92 million Labuan–Sipitang grid upgrade, enabling Sabah to eventually import up to 30MW of electricity from Sarawak through a regional Asean Power Grid once Sarawak's portion is completed. Inland, the RM31.3 million Ranau substation has connected the town to the state grid, reducing diesel dependency for over 15,000 users, while the RM30 million Batu Sapi substation has improved distribution in Sandakan's surrounding areas. Also completed are key infrastructure upgrades at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Labuan's Rancha-Rancha substation, and a submarine cable protection system - all contributing to a stronger, cleaner and more reliable power network across the region. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Klopp 'heartbroken' by Diogo Jota's death

MUNICH: Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he was "heartbroken" to learn Diogo Jota, who he signed in 2020, had died with his younger brother Andre in a car crash on Thursday. Diogo Jota, 28, died alongside Andre after their vehicle veered off a motorway in northern Spain before bursting into flames. Klopp, who is Red Bull's "head of global soccer", persuaded the Liverpool board to pay £45 million (RM260 million) for Diogo Jota after he impressed at Wolves. "This is a moment where I struggle!" Klopp posted on Instagram. "There must be a bigger purpose! But I can't see it! I'm heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother Andre. "Diogo was a not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! "We will miss you so much! All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them! Rest in peace – Love." Diogo Jota was labelled an "exceptional player, exceptional boy," by Klopp early on in the player's spell at Liverpool. Jota took little time to deliver some return on Liverpool's investment, becoming the first player in the club's history to score in his first four home games. He was a key part of Klopp's side that won the League Cup and FA Cup in 2021/22, narrowly missing out on the Premier League and Champions League for what would have been an unprecedented quadruple. - AFP

RM260,000 worth of smuggled cattle seized in Kelantan

TANAH MERAH: The General Operations Force (GOF) foiled an attempt to smuggle eight cows last night, seizing the animals and a lorry, both estimated to be worth about RM260,000. The seizure was made during an operation at Kampung Batu Gajah, here. GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said the operation was carried out by the Eighth Battalion as part of Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan. "The team stopped a suspicious lorry that was passing through the area at about 7.20pm. "Upon inspecting the vehicle, GOF personnel discovered eight cows believed to have been smuggled from Thailand. "The livestock were found inside the lorry without valid documentation," he said. He said the 34-year-old driver, a local man, was detained at the scene. "The suspect is believed to have acted as a transporter for the smuggled cattle, which were intended for distribution in the local market," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953. The suspect and the seized items have been handed over to the Kelantan Veterinary Services Department for further action. Nik Ros Azhan said the GOF will continue to intensify efforts to curb cross-border smuggling and safeguard national security.
