Charity dinner to raise funds for dialysis centre in Mentakab on Nov 1

(From sixth left) Chua, PBA president Choo Sui Len and Hiang with PBA management team and Mentakab haemodialysis centre staff. THE Pahang Buddhist Association (PBA) haemodialysis centre in Mentakab is organising a charity dinner to raise funds in view of increasing operating costs. Event organising chairman Datuk Hiang A Li said the centre's average monthly expenses amounted to some RM100,000. 'Many patients could not afford to pay the full fees and due to this and other operational costs, the centre exceeded its budget by over RM360,000 last year. 'To continue running the centre and provide quality renal treatment, we have decided to host a fundraising dinner,' he said when announcing the details of the programme to kickstart the donation drive. The dinner will be held on Nov 1 at SMJK Hwa Lian school hall in Mentakab. Hiang, who is also the school's board of governors chairman, said private haemodialysis centres charge between RM280 and M300 per session. He said patients in PBA Mentakab centre paid between RM20 and RM100, depending on their family income and affordability. 'Through the charity dinner, we hope to raise about RM3mil for the funds to last for the next five years. 'We urge the public to support us so that we can continue to give quality treatment to all needy patients,' he said, adding that all donations would be exempt from tax. Separately, PBA deputy president Datuk Franky Chua Goon Eng said the Kuantan haemodialysis centre was set up in 1996 to assist renal patients from all races. He said over the years, some 300 patients, especially those who could not afford to pay the full fees, benefitted from the initiative. 'In 2018, we opened our second centre to assist those residing in Temerloh and Mentakab. To date, we have 10 dialysis machines there, treating 26 patients. 'Our main aim is to help less fortunate patients, urgent cases and not for profit,' he said. Chua also said every year, the number of patients was increasing with some getting younger. He added that both centres also offered haemodiafiltration (HDF) treatment, the highest standard of dialysis. 'These HDF machines can significantly reduce complications post-dialysis, aligning with the centre's goal of helping patients resume their daily lives. 'So far, we have eight HDF machines,' said Chua, who also urged the people to go for regular check-ups and adopt a healthy lifestyle. TM's 1Q net profit down 5.5% on 5G costs despite stable revenue

TELEKOM Malaysia Bhd (TM) saw a 5.5% year-on-year drop in net profit to RM401.26 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 (1Q25), down from RM424.81 million a year earlier, mainly due to 5G access costs and higher device expenses. Revenue inched up 0.5% to RM2.85 billion, supported by stronger business-to-business (B2B) digital solutions, carrier-to-carrier (C2C) demand, and the education segment, helping offset weaker business-to-consumer (B2C) performance. '1Q25 revenue grew as expected, within the projected low single-digit range,' the group said. Operating costs rose 7.6% year-on-year to RM1.8 billion, though lower net finance costs helped partially offset the pressure. TM invested RM280 million, or 9.8% of revenue, in capital expenditure focused on digital infrastructure such as data centres, domestic fibre, and submarine cables. Looking ahead, group CEO Amar Huzaimi Md Deris said TM is focusing on core strengths to tap into opportunities like data centres, GPU-as-a-Service, cloud, and smart services, aiming for disciplined execution and long-term value creation. — TMR

Daim's frozen billions face forfeiture by MACC

PUTRAJAYA: Frozen assets worth billions linked to the late finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, his family and his proxies, are currently in the process of asset forfeiture by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). Chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that around RM2bil in assets was currently frozen. 'It could be more after we obtain certain information from overseas. 'We are communicating with authorities from other countries, including Switzerland, the United Kingdom and others. 'We have investigated him since February 2023 and have opened numerous investigation papers including the latest one. 'Even though he has passed on, the MACC is heading towards the direction of asset forfeiture and we are looking at assets that had not been declared previously,' he said at a press conference at the MACC headquarters here yesterday. On Jan 29, 2024, Daim was charged with failing to declare his assets in the Sessions Court. According to the charge sheet, Daim had intentionally given a written statement under oath that did not comply with the terms of notice under Section 36(1) (b) of the MACC Act 2009, whereby he did not declare assets as stated in Appendix A (which included a bank account, seven luxury cars, 38 companies and 25 plots of land and properties spread across Kuala Lumpur, Negri Sembilan, Pahang and Perak. Daim was charged under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act 2009, which carries imprisonment of up to five years and a fine not exceeding RM100,000, upon conviction. Daim was granted bail of RM280,000 in one surety. However, he passed away on Nov 13 at the age of 86. On the ongoing investigation into Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Azam said that the MACC will record the statement of his former son-in-law. Datuk Jovian Mandagie is expected to have his statement recorded in the next two weeks. 'Jovian is based in Indonesia and we will need to record his statements. This is to confirm the assets declared by Ismail Sabri. 'There were some assets mentioned in Ismail Sabri's statement that we need to verify. I believe it will be done within a week or two. 'Investigations are expected to be completed by the end of June when we will then refer it to the DPP for further action. If there is enough to charge then we will suggest doing so,' he said. On the investigations into the disappearance of Datin Seri Pamela Ling Yueh, he said that it is fully a police matter. 'I maintain that this occurred outside the MACC and we leave it to the police to investigate. Whatever they wanted we have provided. 'We never called her with the intent to arrest her. To clear up issues, Pamela was (previously) arrested over failure to present herself to the MACC, not due to the investigation of the case. 'Failure to present themselves is an offence. That is all and it is separate from our investigation,' he said. On April 9, Pamela was summoned to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to assist with an investigation under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act. However, she went missing while on her way to the appointment. Her lawyer filed a police report regarding her disappearance on the same day. So far, no ransom demand has been made in connection with her disappearance.
