Johor chief police Comm Datuk (third from left) showing the cannabis buds that syndicate sold. With him are Johor deputy chief police Deputy Comm Abdul Latiff Mehat (second from right) and Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat (right). JOHOR BARU: Police have busted a drug syndicate with the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of various narcotics worth RM3.5mil. Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the suspects, a local man and two Vietnamese women, were arrested in five separate raids conducted around the city on Thursday and Friday (July 10 and 11). 'The syndicate is believed to have been active since April, using rented rooms and condominium units as storage and repackaging sites for drugs before distributing them to the local market. 'All three suspects had no criminal records, but tested positive for methamphetamine,' he told a press conference at state police headquarters on Monday (July 14). He added that among the drugs seized were 20.71kg of ecstasy powder, 18.49kg of cannabis, 154.25g of ketamine, and 141g of Erimin 5 pills. 'The drugs, valued at RM3.56mil, could have been supplied to 88,788 drug users. 'Drug processing and repackaging equipment, along with RM800 in cash, were also confiscated,' he said, adding that the suspects have been remanded until Thursday (July 17) to assist the investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The two women are also being investigated under Section 6(3) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 to verify their travel documents. Return to sender: Court throws out bank's RM3.5mil claim on loan guarantors over wrong addresses
KOTA KINABALU: A bank's bid to recover RM3.5mil from two guarantors of a loan facility was dismissed by the High Court of Labuan after it was found that the notices of demand were not served to the correct addresses. Justice Alexander Siew, sitting in Kota Kinabalu on Friday (July 11), dismissed the claim by the bank against two personal guarantors of a bai bithaman ajil (BBA) Islamic facility worth RM2.8mil granted to a company to finance the purchase of land in Kampung Ganggarak, Labuan. The bank sued both the company and its guarantors on Nov 9, 2018, seeking full repayment, interest and costs after claiming the company allegedly defaulted in repayment. Justice Siew, in his judgment, found that the bank's notices of demand had been addressed to the wrong addresses and, as such, the bank failed to make a demand on the defendants for repayment. "As the guarantees were on-demand in nature, the failure to serve valid demand notices was fatal to the bank's case," he said in dismissing the claim against the guarantors, awarding RM10,000 in costs to each. The guarantors' counsel Datuk Seri K. Rakhbir Singh had submitted to the court that the bank's notices of demand were fundamentally defective. 'The plaintiff (bank) keeps repeating that it had issued the notices. However, this is not the point of contention. The point of contention is that the notices were all sent to the wrong addresses," he argued. The court, however, allowed the bank's claim against the company with costs on separate grounds, in line with the position that the writ itself could constitute sufficient demand against a principal borrower. Rakbhir later said the ruling reaffirms that strict compliance with procedural requirements is not a mere technicality, but a fundamental element in the enforcement of guarantees. "The case stands as a timely reminder to lenders that shortcuts in service and notice can prove costly, even in claims worth millions," he added.

Govt adds 10,000 more MyLesen spots for poor students to get free B2 licence
SEREMBAN: An additional 10,000 secondary school students from poor families will be able to apply for the free motorcycle licence under the government's MyLesen B2 Programme this year, says Anthony Loke Siew Fook. He said the Transport Ministry has agreed to add to the 15,000 spots initially approved for this year due to the overwhelming response. "Under Budget 2025, the government had agreed to bear the cost to provide free Class B2 motorcycle licences for 15,000 Form Four and Five students from B40 families. "However, in the first six months of this year, we received 15,191 applications and 14,581 students, or 97% from the allocated quota, have already participated in the programme," he told reporters after handing over the B2 license to students here on Thursday (July 10). He said the additional 10,000 spots will cost the ministry another RM3.5mil. It costs RM350 for each participant to sit for tests and to obtain a valid license. The cost, he said, will be borne by the ministry through its various initiatives. Loke, who is also Seremban MP, said of the 10,000 additional spots, 1,000 will be reserved for Negri Sembilan as the ministry had received an overwhelming response from applicants here. Separately, Loke also advised school authorities to check if students who rode motorcycles had a valid license. "We need to get schools to help provide us with the information, as we want to help students from B40 families to obtain a license. "Any student who rides into the school compound must be asked to provide such details," he said. Loke reiterated that this was not to penalise the students but to help the Road Transport Department identify and license them. Asked if the ministry would revoke the licences of those who benefited from the programme but participated in illegal racing or committed other traffic violations, Loke said he supported the move. "We are giving them free licences because our intention is to help them. "If they are involved in other undesirable activities on the road, then we will revoke the licence," he said, adding that this was important as they would not only be endangering their lives but the safety of other road users as well.
