A better travel experience at KLIA

SEPANG: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 has undergone a RM30mil upgrade in the first half of the year, unveiling 14 new initiatives designed to offer passengers a smarter, faster and more welcoming travel experience. These enhancements come at a strategic time, as Malaysia prepares to host the 47th Asean Summit in October and intensifies efforts for Visit Malaysia 2026. Abd Hasman Abd Muhimim, general manager of operations for KLIA Terminal 1, said the upgrades reflect Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd's (MAHB) ongoing commitment to position KLIA as a world-class, efficient and inclusive international hub. 'As of the first half of 2025, KLIA has recorded 30.1 million passengers, marking a 9.9% increase compared to the same period last year. 'Our aim is to reduce queuing times and improve operational efficiency at every touchpoint. We continuously assess current needs and will expand facilities wherever necessary to ensure KLIA delivers the best possible service,' he told reporters at KLIA yesterday. The scooters, stationed at key areas in the main and satellite terminals, are equipped with oxygen tanks, trauma kits and automated external defibrillators (AEDs). 'Well-trained paramedics can now arrive at the scene within three minutes to handle a range of emergencies, from cardiac arrests to minor injuries. This significantly reduces response times and improves overall passenger safety,' said Abd Hasman. Additionally, 36 family-friendly parking bays have been introduced, converted from 54 standard bays and located on various levels of the short-term car park. Abd Hasman explained that this move came in response to the increasing number of families travelling through KLIA, prompting the airport to provide more tailored and convenient facilities. To support mobility and accessibility, MAHB is also rolling out 100 new wheelchairs, with 50 already available free of charge at key locations throughout the terminal, including the main terminal building and satellite concourses. Abd Hasman said 80 washrooms have been upgraded with wider entrances, sensor taps, grab bars and floor-level emergency call buttons. Passenger convenience has been further enhanced by replacing 5,000 outdated baggage trolleys with lighter, more stable models featuring strap-free handles and built-in brakes. Passenger processing has seen significant upgrades as well. A mobile bag-drop system has been introduced on a trial basis, enabling the processing of 10 times more luggage than traditional counters. At the domestic security checkpoint, enhanced tray lanes and unpack/repack zones have doubled screening capacity to 1,500 passengers per hour, reducing wait times to under five minutes. Self-service capabilities have also been expanded, with nine automated boarding pass scanners now operational at international airside entry points – up from just six manual lanes previously – offering faster, more contactless processing. To facilitate smoother departures for passengers requiring assistance, two additional immigration priority counters have been added. These serve families with young children, the elderly, expectant mothers and passengers with reduced mobility. Clearer signage has been introduced to ensure these counters are easily located. Beyond functional improvements, the upgrades also enhance the overall ambience of the terminal. New heritage-themed wall installations celebrate Malaysian culture and identity, creating visually engaging public spaces. Wayfinding at Aerotrain stations has been improved to help passengers navigate easily, while the Kids Zone at Gate C30 has been revitalised with an orangutan-themed playground to provide an interactive and fun space for children.

RM34.2mil federal govt injection to boost Sandakan's public infrastructure

SANDAKAN: The federal government has approved RM34.2mil to fund key infrastructure and community upgrades in Sandakan — Sabah's second-largest city, located on the state's east coast — as part of efforts to uplift living standards and drive local development. The projects, under the Housing and Local Government Ministry, were announced during Minister Nga Kor Ming's working visit to Sandakan on Thursday (July 10), where he inspected eight sites earmarked for improvement. The largest allocation — RM30mil — is for upgrading and building new landfill cells at the Labuk solid waste disposal site, with completion targeted by August 2027. 'The 3.8ha facility will be able to handle up to 200,000 metric tonnes of waste. This is crucial for Sandakan's goal of becoming a cleaner, more sustainable city,' Nga said during the visit, held under the ministry's Sentuhan Kasih outreach programme. Nga said the visit was part of the unity government's continued commitment to ensure federal resources benefit Sabahans directly. 'This is not just about infrastructure — it's about uplifting quality of life. The unity government is committed to inclusive development that reaches all corners of the country, including Sabah,' he said. Among the completed initiatives is the RM400,000 refurbishment of the Jalan Singapore community hall, which involved drainage upgrades, repainting, and structural repairs, and was completed in just two months. Nearby, repainting works are ongoing at Taman Singapore Apartments, with four blocks — 62, 72, 73 and 74 — nearing completion. A total of RM1mil has been allocated under the Malaysia Housing Maintenance Fund (TPPM), including an additional RM500,000 for expanding the repainting scope. The project is expected to be fully completed by July 28. 'This initiative focuses on improving physical infrastructure and basic amenities to ensure safer, cleaner, and more comfortable living conditions for strata residents,' Nga said. Sandakan is a coastal town located on the state's east coast, about 330km from the state capital Kota Kinabalu. With a population nearing half a million, it is known for its rich history, biodiversity, and role as one of Sabah's key urban centres. Meanwhile, the ministry has also approved RM2mil for upgrading four major markets — Pasar Elopura, Pasar Kim Fung, Pasar Umum and Pasar Sim-Sim — with new tables and facilities aimed at improving hygiene and comfort for local traders. Two more RM400,000 allocations will go towards sports facilities: a roof for the basketball court at Taman Indah Jaya, and upgrades to the futsal court at Harmoni low-cost housing. Nga and his delegation also visited PR1MA's Residensi Borneo Cove project, where 94% of the 999 units have been sold and over 700 residents have moved in. Built on a 9.53-acre site along Jalan Buli Sim Sim, the project features three residential blocks with a multipurpose hall, surau, futsal court, playground, kindergarten and nursery. 'The success of these projects is the result of strategic cooperation between KPKT, local authorities, and the Sabah state government. This strong synergy ensures effective oversight and maximum benefit to the people,' Nga said. He added that these efforts reflect the ministry's broader mission to improve community well-being and ensure that development reaches all levels of society.

GFM Services acquires stake in Shapadu Energy

PETALING JAYA: GFM Services Bhd has signed a conditional share sale agreement to acquire a 60% stake in Shapadu Energy Sdn Bhd for RM30mil in cash from Shapadu Corp Sdn Bhd, strengthening its presence in the oil and gas facilities maintenance (O&G FM) sector. This acquisition builds on GFM's 2023 purchase of Highbase Strategic Sdn Bhd (Highbase), another O&G FM player. Shapadu Energy, via its unit Shapadu CR Asia, holds a key turnaround maintenance contract (TA4MS) with Pengerang Refining Company Sdn Bhd and Pengerang Petrochemical Company Sdn Bhd (collectively known as PRefChem), a joint venture between Petroliam Nasional Bhd and Saudi Aramco at the Pengerang Integrated Complex. With this deal, GFM will gain greater access to large-scale, complex projects at PIC, leveraging Shapadu Energy's resources and expertise. The combined operations of Shapadu Energy and Highbase are expected to create operational synergies, enhance efficiency, and reduce costs. Upon completion, GFM will own 60% of Shapadu Energy, with Shapadu Corp retaining 40%. The deal is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025, funded via internal resources and/or borrowings.

Five schools still waiting for promised RM30mil fund

A RM30mil allocation for five Tamil schools should be distributed without delay after it was announced two years ago, said the body that oversees these institutions, Makkal Osai reported. Malaysian Tamil Schools Trustee Boards Council secretary-general Subramaniam Ragavan said the allocation was confirmed by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's special duties officer Shanmugam Mookan at the council's national conference last year. The fund was first announced two years ago on June 10, 2023 by the Prime Minister himself during an event in Shah Alam. > A man in India, who has been estranged from his wife and daughters, has given the deeds to all his properties to a temple, Makkal Osai also reported. Officials at the Arulmigu Renugambal Amman temple in Tamil Nadu were surprised to find the deeds to a piece of land and a house in the box. They were approached by S. Vijayan, 65, who told them he intended to donate his properties to his favourite temple. He had been living alone for 10 years after a disagreement with his wife and his daughters, but claimed they recently begun pestering him to transfer his properties to them.
