Anwar and Modi discuss AI, digital economy at BRICS Summit
RIO DE JANEIRO: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit here.
Both leaders examined the vast potential for expanding strategic cooperation between Malaysia and India across various sectors including trade, investment, digital technology and defence.
"I also welcome the interest of Indian companies to invest in Malaysia's future-focused sectors such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence (AI), renewable energy and the aerospace industry.
"We are equally committed to further strengthening people-to-people ties through collaboration in culture, tourism and education, including the proposal to establish a campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Malaysia," Anwar said.
Kuala Lumpur and New Delhi also highlighted the importance of ensuring regional peace and stability and voiced their support for fair and peaceful resolutions to international issues such as Palestine and Jammu-Kashmir.
Malaysia also welcomes efforts to enhance Asean–India relations ahead of the Asean–India Summit this October, in line with the spirit of mutually beneficial cooperation.
Malaysia is India's third-largest trading partner in Asean, with bilateral trade amounting to RM85.26 billion (USD20.02 billion) in 2023–2024, contributing approximately 17 per cent of India's total trade with Asean.
