BALING: The RM22.80 million Sabo Dam in Sungai Kupang is set for early completion, offering enhanced flood protection for Baling's 5,000 residents. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed the project is now 62% complete, surpassing the initial 20% target. He also shared updates on Baling's flood mitigation plan. Phase 1, costing RM9.6 million, is 12% complete and set for November 2025, while Phase 2 (RM118 million) is at 3.68% progress, with a 2029 deadline. 'Baling recorded 17 floods in 2024 alone, up from 10 in 2023,' he noted, citing Irrigation and Drainage Department data. Additionally, Saifuddin inspected 17 replacement homes for Kampung Iboi's 2022 debris flow victims. The RM3 million project is 95% done, with utility works pending before handover by mid-July.

Sabo Dam In Baling Expected To Be Completed Ahead Of Schedule
BALING, June 28 (Bernama) -- The RM22.80 million Sabo Dam in Sungai Kupang near here is expected to be completed ahead of schedule, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said. The dam, which is currently at 62 per cent progress as opposed to the scheduled 20 per cent, will reduce the risk of debris flows that threaten the safety of the 5,000 residents in Baling Town, he added. 'Contractors have given assurances that the project will be completed two months ahead of the original schedule, at the end of next year… it's rare that such a project develops at such a pace,' he told reporters after visiting the project site in his capacity of Kedah state development action council joint chairman near here today. He also shared that the flood mitigation plan in Baling district was at 12 per cent development for Phase 1 and 3.68 per cent for Phase 2 so far, with Phase 1, costing RM9.6 million, expected to be completed in November next year and Phase 2, costing RM118 million, expected to be completed in January 2029. The flood mitigation projects were of utmost importance to the people in Baling as they faced frequent flooding previously, he said. 'In 2024, Baling was hit by 17 incidents of floods… in 2023 only 10 times… according to data from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage,' he said, pointing out that the flood mitigation plan was part of the Federal Government's efforts to tackle the flooding issue in the district. Saifuddin Nasution also visited the location where 17 replacement houses and facilities are being built for victims of the debris flow that hit Kampung Iboi on July 4, 2022. The project, costing RM3 million, is 95 per cent complete, with only the preparation of utilities for the houses remaining, he added. 'It is expected to be done by the third week of July and when it is settled, we will hand the houses to those affected,' he said.

Hartalega's FY2024 Profit Jumps 6-Folds To RM72 Million
For the current quarter ended 31 March 2025 (Q4FY25), rubber glove maker Hartalega reported revenue of RM612 million, an increase of RM81 million or 15% compared to the preceding year (Q4FY24). The notable revenue growth was primarily driven by an increase in sales volume of 9% and the strengthening of average selling price (ASP) of 6%. The Group recorded an operating profit of RM9.6 million during the quarter, recovering from an operating loss of RM12.5 million in Q4FY24. This improvement was primarily driven by the higher sales volume and improved operating margin underpinned by an increase in average selling price (ASP) and enhanced operational efficiencies. Despite the increase in operating profit, the Group has registered profit before tax of RM17.6 million, representing a slight decrease as compared to RM18.6 million during Q4FY24. The decline in profitability was mainly due to lower non-operating income recognised during the quarter, which negated the impact of revenue growth for the period. For the 12 months ended 31 March 2025 (12MFY25), the Group achieved revenue of RM2.6 billion, representing a significant increase of RM747 million or 41% compared to the previous financial year (12MFY24). The revenue growth was mainly driven by a 40% increase in sales volume for the year. Operating profit turned positive, at RM53 million compared to an operating loss of RM24 million in 12MFY24. PBT stood at RM48 million, reflecting a 24.7% improvement from RM38 million in 12MFY24. Profit after tax surged more than 6 fold to RM72 million compared to RM12 million recorded in the year before. Hartalega said the profitability improved marginally and was primarily attributable to the significant revenue growth and improved production efficiencies, offset by lower other operating income and adverse foreign exchange fluctuations during the year, which contributed to margin compression Related

Official: Johor zoo to launch night safari before year is out
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 — Johor Zoo's night safari is set to open by the end of this year, according to state executive councillor Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor. The state government has approved RM5 million for phase two of the zoo's upgrading works, which will begin in the first quarter of the year. According to The Star, Mohd Jafni said the upgrades will include better facilities, making 80 per cent of the zoo more accessible for the elderly, people with disabilities, and parents with strollers. 'Additionally, we aim to launch the night safari in the fourth quarter of this year,' he was quoted as saying. He said the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) is also planning to invest RM10 million to develop a new carpark opposite the zoo to accommodate an increase in visitors. Authorities are further considering using a parking area near the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque and adding a pedestrian crossing for safer access to the zoo. Additionally, there are plans to create 200 more parking bays at the Ayer Molek Prison site, which currently serves as the zoo's main parking area. MBJB is exploring the possibility of converting the old prison into a weekend night market to complement the night safari. Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi previously mooted the night safari as a way to further increase visitors to the state's zoo. Johor Zoo, which houses 373 animals from 65 species, has welcomed 500,000 visitors since reopening on August 31 last year following RM9.6 million in upgrades over three years.
