Gurgaon's illegal concrete plants to face sealing, power shutdown: Minister Rao Narbir Singh
Gurgaon: Illegal ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants in the city will face action from the discom and the pollution board, said industry and commerce minister Rao Narbir Singh on Tuesday, asking the pollution control board to seal illegal RMC plants, and the electricity department to immediately cut off their power supplies. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This came after it was found that the RMC plants were operating even after being sealed. While speaking at a review meeting held with officials of the DHBVN and pollution control board on Tuesday regarding departmental works in the district, action on illegal activities, and strengthening of infrastructure, Singh said, "Whenever the pollution control board seals any illegal RMC plant, the electricity department should cut its power connection with immediate effect so that a strong message is sent to those who violate the rules." Singh directed the pollution board and DHBVN officials to jointly take action against such illegal RMCs. Besides, the discom was directed to fix hanging wires on all major roads in the city to maintain smooth traffic flow. "These wires pose an increased risk of accidents during the rainy season, and thus, such areas should be identified and addressed on a priority basis," said Singh. Additionally, he instructed the officials that electric poles located in the middle of roads or within residential areas in rural regions be relocated according to regulations. Singh also acknowledged the issues faced by farmers and workers in rural fields and instructed that old and dilapidated wires should be replaced systematically. He stated that after the harvest, immediate repairs should be conducted in areas where wires are hanging low to prevent accidents. Rao stressed the importance of regular monitoring of departmental work to ensure all tasks are completed according to set standards and timelines. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He warned departmental officials that any negligence or laxity at any level would result in accountability and strict action. GMDA issued notices to four ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants in the city in March for causing dust pollution. The plants, located on the dividing road of Sectors 112/114 and Sectors 78/79A, were accused of taking illegal access from sector dividing roads, damaging the roads, and spilling slurry, leading to dust pollution.

Mohali DC pulls up agency over fire at Sec 91 legacy waste dump
1 2 Mohali: Mohali deputy commissioner Komal Mittal during a surprise inspection found found Sector 91 Legacy Waste Dump site on fire and strongly reprimanded the operating agency for negligence. She directed the officials to install windrows enabling Methane to escape out of waste dump preventing fire. She visited Sector 91 Legacy Waste Dump and the Jagatpura Waste Processing Plant on Thursday to review the progress of waste management initiatives spearheaded by the Mohali municipal corporation. The DC took serious note of the agency's failure to install windrows—crucial for controlling methane emissions—which she said directly contributed to the fire. "If windrows are not constructed, there is no point in clearing the waste. Fire leads to serious pollution, defeating the purpose of our waste remediation efforts," she warned. Providing further details, Mittal said the legacy dump in Sector 91 contains approximately 90,000 metric tonnes (MT) of accumulated waste. With four trommel machines currently in operation, around 600 MT of waste is being processed daily, and the site is expected to be cleared within four months. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Addressing the broader issue of waste management, the DC underscored the critical role of waste segregation. "Effective segregation of wet and dry waste at the source is the cornerstone of a clean and sustainable city," she said. She called on resident welfare associations (RWAs), bulk waste generators, and the general public to participate actively in ensuring proper waste disposal. Mittal directed the municipal corporation to verify that household waste is segregated before it reaches the Resource Management Centres (RMCs). This, she explained, would enhance processing efficiency and reduce the burden on the city's waste infrastructure. At the Jagatpura waste processing plant, the DC reviewed treatment protocols and interacted with contractors and municipal staff. Expressing satisfaction with the progress, she reaffirmed the administration's commitment to building a cleaner, greener Mohali. Municipal officials briefed the DC about the current waste management framework. Waste from most RMCs, except Shahi Majra, is being transported to a facility in Ambala. However, once fully operational, the Shahi Majra and Jagatpura plants—both managed by the same contractor—will handle the entire daily load of 100 MT of fresh waste generated in Mohali. DC Mittal also called for the optimal use of bailing machines at the RMCs. Officials informed her that 10 out of 14 machines are currently functional, and the remaining four will be installed at key locations by next week. The visit concluded with a strong message from the Deputy Commissioner, urging all stakeholders to prioritise environmental responsibility and work collaboratively to transform Mohali into a model city for sustainable waste management. Bargarh farmers demand rabi paddy procurement from May 1; protest delayed schedule
SAMBALPUR: Days the after Bargarh district administration announced uniform rabi paddy procurement from May 14, farmers have raised strong objections, demanding the date be advanced to May 1. A delegation of farmers under Sanjukta Krushak Sangathan met collector Aditya Goyal on Saturday and submitted that procurement guidelines mandate process begin from May 1 and continue up to June 30. The administration's decision to push the starting date to the second week of May would only harm the farmers, the delegation said. In the district level procurement committee (DLPC) meeting on Wednesday, the administration finalised the procurement modalities. However, absence of farmers' representation in the meeting sparked widespread discontent culminating in a protest under the banner of Jay Kisan Andolan outside the collector's office. Farmer leader Ramesh Mahapatra said, unforeseen circumstances besides weather disruptions leave farmers with barely 30-40 days to clear the harvest. Inadequate infrastructure at the mandis means farmers cannot safely store their produce. 'If procurement is delayed, at least administration must ensure paddy is lifted within 48 hours,' he said. Farmers also questioned the rigidity of paddy to be brought only in gunny bags, arguing they should be allowed to use plastic sacks or any other available means suitable. In their memorandum, the farmers alleged that procurement system in the district is severely inadequate. Despite over Rs 200 crore lying unused across the three regulated market committees (RMCs) in Attabira, Bargarh and Padmapur, mandis lack basic facilities, forcing farmers to sell their paddy under trees or out in the open. Fearing crop damage, farmers hesitate to bring their produce to market yards. The farmers demanded that unutilized RMC funds be immediately invested in infrastructure development. The farmers also proposed that mandi staff should be rotated every two years to prevent corruption and favouritism. Despite tall claims by the state government, the practice of arbitrary deductions in the name of fair average quality continued during the recent kharif season. They demanded mandis be made broker-free and direct control of rice millers be curtailed. The farmers suggested that mandi management be entrusted to procuring agents instead of millers. Responding to the grievances, Goyal assured arrangements would be made to allow harvested paddy to be stored at mandis from May 1. A spot survey would be conducted to address the complaints of farmers and token registration issues would be reconsidered to avoid unfair exclusions besides considered the gunny bag issue, he said. Besides Mahapatra, Suresh Nikenti, Niran Padhan, Subhal Padhan, Ekadasia Sahu and Prashant Sahu led the delegation.
