Auckland Trains Up And Running After Winter Upgrade

Monday, 14 July 2025, 10:53 am Press Release: KiwiRail Another successful partial rail closure complete as network readies for CRL . Auckland rail services are back up and running following a successful partial closure to progress significant upgrades across the metro network in preparation for the City Rail Link (CRL) opening in 2026. Around 400 team members worked night and day over the school holidays to upgrade and renew rail infrastructure at priority locations on Auckland's railway system. KiwiRail and our partners used the partial closure, which affected passengers on the Southern Line south of Puhinui, to continue to prepare the network for the more frequent trains the CRL will bring to the region. 'KiwiRail teams worked at more than a dozen sites in locations such as Homai, Te Mahia, and Takanini stations in south Auckland to rebuild foundations under rail lines and install new drainage,' said Dave Gordon, KiwiRail Chief Metro and Capital Programme Officer. 'KiwiRail would like to thank our neighbours living near these locations for their understanding as we undertake this critical 24/7 work. 'Our thanks also extend to the travelling public for their flexibility during this year's series of full and partial rail closures. When trains aren't running on parts of the network, our teams can remove the rail and sleepers and do the substantive work to the foundations and drainage which gives confidence that the network can support the additional trains CRL will enable.' CRL will mean more train services across Auckland – not just the city centre – and shorter journey times. Upgrades and renewals are happening at priority areas across the rail network to get it ready for this change in 2026. KiwiRail's Rail Network Rebuild (RNR) programme to upgrade and renew rail foundations and drainage is in its final stages. RNR work will continue for priority areas throughout the September/October school holidays, alongside some weekend work starting later this month in suburbs including Parnell and Newmarket. Other work happening across the network includes cable and fibre installations, signalling upgrades, level crossing investigation work and the ongoing construction of the new Drury stations. KiwiRail is continuing to upgrade drainage around Henderson Station in west Auckland so it can install new tracks and extend the platform before CRL opens next year. Auckland Transport has recently finished its project to install new lifts and escalators in the station. More information about the range of rail improvement work in Auckland is available at: Where KiwiRail is working For more information on where KiwiRail is working, clickhere: Notes: The City Rail Link will bring Auckland closer together · City Rail Link will double the number of Aucklanders within a 30-minute train journey to the central city and increase rail capacity by at least 50 per cent on its opening day. · It will also significantly cut journey times – for example Henderson to the city centre in just 35 minutes (save 24 minutes). Another example is Maungawhau Station (formerly Mt Eden) to Waitematā (Britomart) in under 10 minutes, which is about half the current time. · Trains will run more frequently - every four minutes through the central city, every six minutes at least from all stations north of Puhinui on the Southern and Eastern Lines, every 8 minutes on the Western Line from Henderson and every 10 from Pukekohe. © Scoop Media

Widespread rains revive farming activity in Ballari

Ballari: Consistent rainfall over the past week has brought relief and optimism to farmers across Ballari district, prompting them to resume agricultural activities with renewed enthusiasm. Following the recent full moon (Maghi Hunnime), farmers had begun preparing their lands by mixing compost and clearing fields — a process now accelerated due to the timely rains. The rainfall has created favourable conditions for the sowing of key crops like red gram (toor), cotton, pearl millet (bajra), foxtail millet (navane), and sunflower. Long-unused agricultural tools and equipment have re-emerged from storage, and farmers are actively engaged in clearing rainfed fields and preparing irrigated lands by adding organic manure. Farmers have already begun sowing activities in rainfed fields. In irrigated areas, they are cleaning the fields and applying compost. According to officials, farmer contact centres across the district have adequate stocks of seeds for crops such as bajra, navane, toor, and sunflower. Additionally, paddy seeds of RNR and Sona Masuri varieties have been stocked for irrigated lands. Joint Director of Agriculture T. Somasundar assured that sufficient stocks of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides have been arranged. 'This year, farmers will not face any shortages. The department has made arrangements through 13 farmer contact centres and 2 additional centres, totalling 15 seed distribution points across the district,' he said. As per his statement, Ballari usually receives an annual average of 599.5 mm of rainfall. Until May 20 last year, the district had received only 53.6 mm, but this year it has recorded 88.4 mm, a 64% increase. For the kharif season, the district has set a target of sowing across 1,63,753 hectares. This includes 89,000 ha of paddy, 35,000 ha of cotton, 20,000 ha of maize, 4,500 ha of red gram, and smaller areas for other crops such as jowar, groundnut, millets, sunflower, and sugarcane. Somasundar added that the kharif season's estimated fertilizer demand stands at 1,08,100 metric tonnes, of which 40,228 metric tonnes are already in stock. Supplies will continue in a phased manner. The district's seed requirement is 11,766 quintals, and 11,800 quintals are currently available. Inspection teams have been formed to monitor the quality and pricing of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. Officials have warned that strict action will be taken against vendors selling substandard agricultural inputs. Farmers are advised to purchase only from authorized sellers to avoid fraud and ensure crop safety. Local farmer Eshwarappa welcomed the onset of monsoon and emphasized the importance of supplying high-quality seeds and fertilizers. 'Water has started flowing into the dams. This is the right time for sowing. Farmers must demand bills from agro-stores to ensure transparency,' he said.

Farmers in Ballary distressed over falling paddy prices after double crop yield

Ballari: Farmers in Bellary, who initially celebrated the success of their double paddy harvest due to the abundant water supply from the Tungabhadra reservoir, are now facing se-vere disappointment as paddy prices plummet. This year, farmers cultivated two crops of paddy, anticipating generous returns for their hard work. However, unfavourable conditions in international export markets and increased imports from neighbouring states have caused a significant drop in pric-es. Last year, farmers harvested a single paddy crop and received favourable market prices. This year, however, those who grew two crops were hopeful for better profits, but the current market conditions have left them anxious and frustrated. In early March, the price for RNR variety paddy was Rs2,800 per quintal, while Sona Masoori was priced at Rs2,600. Currently, RNR is selling for Rs1,600 per quintal, short RNR at Rs1,550, and Ganga Kaveri at Rs1,400. The situation has been compounded by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policies, which include a 26% tariff on rice exports from India. Though this tariff has been sus-pended for 90 days, it has already disrupted international rice trade. India's rice is shipped to many countries, including the U.S., and market analysts believe that the tariffs have negatively impacted the export sector. The filling of the Tungabhadra reservoir has led to similar crop yields in neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, increasing rice availability and driving prices down. Farmers are now overwhelmed with excess stock that is flooding the market, causing prices to dip further. Farmer Hanumanthappa expressed his frustration about the declining support prices for the second crop, stating that farmers are crucial to the nation's economy but feel neglected by government policies. 'The government needs to declare a support price and address the injustices faced by farmers,' he asserted. Another farmer, Sridhar Gowda, lamented that there are no buyers for the crop, which is not even being safe-guarded. With cultivation costs reaching up to Rs35,000 per acre, yielding only 40 bags per acre, he criticized the government's failure to open purchase centres as promised. 'The expected support price was Rs2,300, but now it has decreased by Rs1,000. We are in deep trouble,' he said. As farmers continue to grapple with these challenges, calls for government interven-tion and a fair pricing policy grow louder, emphasizing the urgent need to support those who feed the nation.
