Regina Provincial Correctional Centre officer charged in drug trafficking investigation

An officer from the Regina Provincial Correctional Centre (RPCC) has been charged following an investigation into suspected drug trafficking into the facility. The investigation was launched in 2023 after a 36-year-old inmate at the RPCC was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, RCMP said in a news release Wednesday. It found the inmate had an accomplice outside of the RPCC that had been assisting with purchasing, packaging and transporting drugs to an officer at the facility, RCMP said. A 35-year-old woman, who is not the officer in question, was charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. Upon further investigation, RCMP identified the correctional officer involved, the release said. Justin Amyotte, 44, from Regina has been charged with crimes including one count of conspiracy to commit the indictable offence of trafficking a controlled substance, one count of breach of trust by a public officer and possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, according to the release.

Political storm in Rajasthan after Jagdeep Dhankhar's sudden resignation; Congress targets BJP

JAIPUR: The sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has sparked political turbulence across the country, with Rajasthan witnessing intensified reactions due to Dhankhar's deep-rooted connection to the state. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee (RPCC) President Govind Singh Dotasara have launched sharp attacks on the BJP and the RSS, questioning the real reason behind Dhankhar's unexpected decision to step down. Gehlot called the development 'suspicious' and linked it to what he described as a possible RSS-BJP ploy to initiate a new political move in the country. 'People of Rajasthan are shocked. He has always raised his voice for farmers inside and outside Parliament. If someone like him—our son of the soil—resigns from the post of Vice President, naturally the public is bound to question it,' Gehlot said. 'Everyone is saying that there cannot be any health reason behind it—there must be something else. This is the first time in history that a Vice President has resigned. Even when the Prime Minister or President undergoes heart surgery or a bypass, they don't resign. How can this be justified on the grounds of health?' Gehlot asked. Echoing similar sentiments, Dotasara called the resignation "shocking" and said it was difficult to believe that health concerns were the only reason behind such a major decision. 'The Vice President's resignation raises serious questions. We are not convinced by the official explanation,' he said.

Cong reserves 50% tickets for youth in Raj local polls

Jaipur: In a significant move towards youth empowerment, the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee (RPCC) has announced that 50% of its tickets for upcoming local body elections will be reserved for candidates under 50 years of age. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The announcement came from Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra following a two-day consultation with party coordinators from all 200 assembly constituencies here. The initiative, which aligns with the party's 2022 Udaipur Declaration, will be implemented in the urban body and Panchayati Raj elections scheduled for 2025 and 2026, respectively. This marks the first major implementation of the declaration's proposal to allocate half of the party tickets to younger members. "This decision reflects our commitment to recognising grassroots leadership and empowering the next generation," said Dotasra. "Inputs from mandal, block and district presidents will play a major role in the ticket distribution process," he said. The reservation policy will apply to all positions contested on party symbols, including municipal chairpersons, mayors, Zila Pramukhs and Panchayat Samiti members. Congress spokesperson Swarnim Chaturvedi confirmed that local units have been directed to identify and groom promising young candidates for electoral roles. The party is also reviewing its organisational structure, with plans to replace inactive office-bearers with more field-engaged members based on feedback from 200 assembly constituency coordinators. The elections are currently on hold due to the state govt's 'One State, One Election' policy, which aims to synchronise all local elections. In the interim, administrators have been appointed to oversee various Panchayats and urban bodies. This strategic move is seen as part of the Congress party's broader efforts to revitalise its grassroots base and promote youth participation in local governance across Rajasthan.

Kharge takes stock of Cong in Raj

Jaipur: Following the 'Save the Constitution' rally at Ramleela Maidan, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge Monday held a series of meetings with state Congress functionaries, including all district presidents, coordination committee of Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee (RPCC), and the extended executive committee of RPCC. According to party sources, Kharge told party functionaries that Congress would not hesitate to relieve them of their positions if they were found to be inactive. He expressed displeasure over Tonk district president not being able to give information about the mandal units in a meeting of district presidents. He also asked AICC secretary co-incharge of Rajasthan Ritwik Makwana how many times did he visit districts under his charge and how many times did he hold meetings. Kharge advised party functionaries to visit the field. "We are going to the grassroots level to strengthen the organisation. If the mandals, blocks and districts are strong, the party will be strong," he told mediapersons. AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal said the appointment of 400 block presidents, 2,200 mandal presidents, and 40,000 booth presidents had been completed in Rajasthan. "All other organisational positions and committees will be filled within the next two months, and training for party functionaries will begin immediately. The selection process for DCC presidents in Rajasthan will also begin in due course," Venugopal said.
