Aamir Khan on declining Rs 125 crore OTT deal: Was advised against it
Actor Aamir Khan recently spoke about his bold move where he went against industry norms and declined the offer of not selling subscription rights for 'Sitaare Zameen Par' before its theatrical release. Calling it a tough but deliberate choice, the actor-producer revealed he turned down a Rs 125 crore deal, prioritising the audience's verdict over guaranteed an exclusive conversation with Business Today, the actor shared his views on the same and said, 'We did not sell the subscription model before the release. That was a tough and big decision. And so we did. We didn't have any safety net. So I believe that at the end of the day, it is the audience that decides how much they love the film. And any film works on word of mouth when people love the film. So it's important for me that when I come out of the film, I want to know what all the people think about it. With 'Sitaare Zameen Par', the theatrical audience has told us that they really love the film. The film has done more than 250 crores worldwide. And it has received a lot of love.'advertisementHe added, 'That decision of saying no to Rs 125 crores was not an easy one. I will not deny that I was given a lot of advice against what I was doing. But I strongly felt that that's a model that I feel in the long run is not good for me. It doesn't work for me as a creative or as a business person. And I felt that rather than the Rs 125 crores of a pre-sale that I'm getting from a subscription platform, I would rather take the Rs 100 from each audience of mine. I want that Rs 100 of that audience to be more valuable to me.' The 60-year-old also spoke about how he wanted to use the digital space to promote young and independent filmmakers who struggle to find a theatrical release.'Sitaare Zameen Par' is directed by RS Prasanna, who had earlier directed 'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan'. The film's screenplay is written by Divy Nidhi Sharma. It is a remake of the 2018 Spanish sports drama 'Campeones'. The movie is co-produced by Khan, Aparna Purohit, B Shrinivas Rao and Ravi Bhagchandka.'Sitaare Zameen Par' was released in theatres on June 20, 2025.- EndsTrending Reel

Aamir Khan Bypasses Traditional Streamers and Takes ‘Sitaare Zameen Par' Straight to YouTube: ‘I'm Hoping This Will Be the Blueprint for My Future Slate' (EXCLUSIVE)
Aamir Khan is making waves in the Indian film distribution landscape with an unprecedented move that sidesteps traditional streaming platforms entirely. The Bollywood superstar has revealed that his latest theatrical hit 'Sitaare Zameen Par' will be released exclusively on YouTube Movies-on-Demand starting Aug. 1, marking a new approach to post-theatrical distribution. The film, which has surpassed $30 million worldwide at the box office, will be available for rent at INR100 ($1.15) in India and in 38 international markets including the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Germany, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Spain, with localized pricing for each territory. More from Variety YouTube Pumps Up Ad Revenue 13% in Q2 to Reach $9.8 Billion India Reports Over $1.1 Billion in Media Deals at WAVES 2025 Creator-Focused Franchise Building Venture Flywheel Launched by Eyal Baumel Based on Experience With Leading YouTubers (EXCLUSIVE) 'Roughly 15 years ago, I realized that our most successful films, like '3 Idiots' or 'Dangal,' the statistic of people watching in theaters is about 2-3% of the population,' Khan tells Variety. 'So the next thought that came to me is, how do we reach out to the remaining 97-98%?' The film, a spiritual successor to Khan's 2007 classic 'Taare Zameen Par,' stars the actor-producer alongside Genelia Deshmukh and features an ensemble cast including 10 actors with intellectual disabilities. Directed by R.S. Prasanna and written by Divy Nidhi Sharma, the project celebrates themes of love, laughter and inclusivity. Khan's decision to bypass subscription-based streaming services in favor of YouTube's pay-per-view model represents a calculated bet on democratizing content consumption. 'I don't think [subscription models are] economically viable for films to do that, not over a long term period,' he explains. 'That's my personal opinion.' The timing of this distribution experiment coincides with several technological and behavioral shifts in India's media landscape. Khan points to the introduction of digital payments, increased internet penetration and the proliferation of smartphones and smart TVs as key factors that made this approach viable. 'India is the No. 1 country in electronic payments. Almost everyone uses various apps to make payments,' Khan notes. 'Internet penetration earlier was not that strong. Today, it's very strong and getting stronger.' Gunjan Soni, country managing director of YouTube India, emphasized the platform's massive reach as a key attraction for the partnership. According to ComScore data, YouTube reaches four out of five internet users in India aged 18+, while entertainment videos on the platform generate over 7.5 billion views daily globally. 'Aamir's vision and the way he drives democratization is really the heart of YouTube's mission as well,' Soni tells Variety. 'So it was actually almost a perfect fit from that perspective.' The collaboration represents YouTube's growing ambitions in premium content distribution. The platform already offers a robust selection of movies available for purchase or rental across diverse languages and genres, positioning itself as a viable alternative to traditional streaming services. For Khan, the move fulfills a long-held dream of reaching every corner of his audience at an accessible price point. 'If a family of four sits and watches the film, then it comes to INR25 [¢28] per head, which I think is a value that works not just for the audiences, but also gives an opportunity for filmmakers to earn so they can make better content,' he says. Notably, YouTube has not provided any advance payment to Aamir Khan Productions for the release, with the entire arrangement based on revenue sharing from the pay-per-view model. Khan views this distribution approach as more than a one-time experiment. 'I'm hoping that this will be the blueprint for my future slate, because I feel this is the best way that I would like to reach my audience,' he says. 'I would like to have a healthy theatrical release, and then I would like to be present on digital, on YouTube, on a video on demand basis.' The distribution strategy could have significant implications for emerging filmmakers in India's prolific film industry. Khan sees the model as particularly beneficial for young storytellers who struggle to secure theatrical releases or streaming deals. 'This is an opportunity for young people who otherwise don't have an entry,' Khan explains. 'You can put it out, and if your film is good and people like it, things go viral every day.' Khan's production company is already planning to leverage this distribution model to support emerging talent, with the actor-producer indicating he would consider curating films from newer filmmakers and taking only a small commission while passing on larger profits to the creators. The success of this experiment will be closely watched throughout the industry, as exhibitors and traditional streaming services grapple with changing consumer behaviors and technological disruption. 'It's like Christopher Columbus took off searching for India. He ended up in America,' Khan says when asked about success metrics. 'Will we have five viewers? Will we have 5,000 viewers? Will we have 50,000 viewers? Will we have five crore [50 million] viewers? I don't know.' However, both Khan and Soni express confidence in the long-term potential of the movies-on-demand model, with the YouTube executive indicating that the platform is actively courting other industry players to adopt similar distribution strategies. 'This is the beginning. We are very much rolling out the red carpet for the industry and would be having active discussions,' Soni says. For Khan, who has built a reputation for taking creative and commercial risks throughout his career, this latest venture represents more than just an alternative distribution method — it's a fundamental reimagining of how premium content can reach audiences in an increasingly digital world. 'I believe it's a very important step towards really strengthening cinema, strengthening storytelling,' Khan concludes. 'That's what I believe, and which is why I'm putting my entire weight behind it.' The film will offer subtitles and dubs in key languages to reach broader audiences both in India and internationally. Khan's next productions include 'Lahore 1947' starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, and 'Ek Din' featuring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi, both under his Aamir Khan Productions banner. Sitaare Zameen Par Worldwide Lifetime Box Office: Aamir Khan starrer collects Rs 268 crore globally to emerge a HIT
Sitaare Zameen Par, directed by RS Prasanna and starring Aamir Khan, Genelia Deshmukh and a bunch of other wonderful actors, nears the end of its global theatrical run. With an expected Rs 165 crore net in India (Rs 199 crore gross) and another USD 8 million from international markets (Rs 69 crore), the dramedy shall end its theatrical run with a good Rs 268 crore. These numbers looked unimaginable when the advance bookings for the movie opened, but it did well to get this far. Sitaare Zameen Par To End Its Global Run Grossing Rs 268 Crore Sitaare Zameen Par may not be among Aamir Khan's highest grossing films. However, it is a film that gives the actor his goodwill back. Duds like Thugs Of Hindostan and Laal Singh Chaddha affected his goodwill but it is, to an extent, back with Sitaare Zameen Par. While the footfalls will be lower than Thugs Of Hindostan almost everywhere, it's not that big of an issue as there is a stark difference in the budget, release size and box office health. Sitaare Zameen Par's Profitability Depends On The Non Theatrical Digital Rights Sitaare Zameen Par, with a reported budget of Rs 120 crore, including the remake rights and print and advertisement expenses, and excluding Aamir Khan's remuneration, will fetch the producers a Rs 110 crore global share. Non-theatrical share of the movie is pegged at Rs 50 crore excluding the digital rights. Rs 40 crore of surplus, along with the digital rights of the film (if ever sold) will be Aamir Khan's remuneration from the project. As Aamir Khan, being the major star that he is, gives over 2 years to every project of his, it's only fair to assume his remuneration to be taken as atleast Rs 100 crore. Most of his contemporaries who take relatively lesser time for every movie of theirs, make or charge more for every film, and that's how we have arrived at this figure. If the film's digital rights are not sold, the makers will have to find a way to generate atleast Rs 60 crore more, to justify Aamir Khan's involvement in the project. Aamir Khan's Next Film Feature After Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan will next be seen in Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie, led by Rajinikanth. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.

Will Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par release on OTT? Here's what we know
Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par has completed one month of successful run in cinemas and is currently in its 5th week at the box office. While the movie has already emerged a Clean Hit with a smashing box office collections of Rs 160 crore in 31 days, a major section of the audience is eagerly waiting for its OTT release. However, one must know that Sitaare Zameen Par won't stream on any OTT platform. As Aamir Khan has himself confirmed multiple times, his upcoming films will be exclusive to cinemas only. The actor is steadfast in his decision and is in no mood to sell his digital rights to any OTT platform despite receiving hefty offers from the streaming services. Though the RS Prasanna directorial is likely to finish its theatrical run around Rs 165 crore net in a couple of weeks, Sitaare Zameen Par will still not arrive on any online platform for at least 6 months. Will Sitaare Zameen Par release on YouTube? As Pinkvilla earlier reported, Aamir Khan is planning to release Sitaare Zameen Par on YouTube with a Pay-Per-View model and that too, after 6 months of its theatrical release. Though the actor is yet to decide where he will release Sitaare Zameen Par post-theatrical release, he is definitely inclined towards YouTube, which has the widest reach among all the other online platforms. The Dangal actor and producer is known to revolutionize the market as he has gone against the tide with this latest release, which turned out to be a gutsy move. Interestingly, this strategy will not remain only for Sitaare Zameen Par but will apply to all the upcoming Aamir Khan ventures. Co-starring Genelia Deshmukh and a bunch of real-life specially-challenged individuals, the sports-drama is expected to wind its theatrical run between the lifetime earnings of Raid 2 and Housefull 5. For the uninitiated, the Ajay Devgn movie had collected Rs 165 crore net in India, while the comedy sequel starring Akshay Kumar ended its entire run at Rs 167 crore net. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.
