Thug Life petition abuse of law process: Kannada Sahitya Parishat

Bengaluru: Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP), the apex body pertaining to Kannada literature, Friday claimed the petition filed by Raajkamal Films International Chennai, producers of Kamal Haasan-starrer Thug Life, is an abuse of the process of law. The KSP, through its president Mahesh Joshi, has sought impleadment, opposing Raajkamal Films International's petition. Appearing for KSP, senior advocate S Basavaraj slammed Kamal's controversial remark that Kannada language originated from Tamil. Basavaraj said he has high regard for Kamal as an actor and even gave the example of his silent movie, Pushpaka Vimaana, which won accolades. According to Basavaraj, the actor set his own house on fire by his own conduct and now he is pleading before the high court with the request, "Please douse the flames." One cannot be an arsonist and a fire-fighter at the same time, he added. Justice M Nagaprasanna adjourned the case hearing while granting time to Raajkamal Films International to file their objections. The undertaking given by the petitioners that they will not release the film in Karnataka until the matter is resolved after holding dialogue with Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce will continue, the judge said, while orally repeating the suggestion made by the court earlier that "discretion is the best part of valour". KSP moves Karnataka HC seeking intervention in plea filed against relief of 'Thug Life'

The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce has resolved to ban the release and distribution of Thug Life in Karnataka as actor Kamal Haasan refused to tender an apology over his controversial statement that Kannada was born out of Tamil. Questioning this decision, Raajkamal Films International, for which Kamal Haasan is one of the directors, moved the HC. In its impleading application filed to this petition, KSP contended that the statement in question amounts to intentional or reckless speech that denigrates the dignity of the Kannada language and added that so far, the actor has not made any bonafide effort to tender an apology over his remarks. The KSP has also opposed the prayer made by the petitioner for police protection to release a movie in Karnataka, saying that police resources are not meant to provide protection to a commercial interest. The KSP is approaching the court in the public interest to seek permission to intervene in the petition and to place on record relevant constitutional, linguistic and cultural issues arising from recent events that have caused public unrest and hurt to the sentiments of the Kannada-speaking community.

Kannada Sahitya Parishat seeks to join petition against Kamal film release

Bengaluru: The Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP), has filed an impleading application before the high court in connection with a petition filed by Chennai-based Raajkamal Films International, producer of the Kamal Haasan-starrer 'Thug Life'. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Opposing the plea for police protection sought by the production house for the film's release in Karnataka, KSP, through its president Mahesh Joshi, argued that the Constitution does not grant absolute protection to speech, especially when it is likely to disturb public harmony or hurt the dignity of a language and its people. Referring to Kamal's controversial remark that Kannada originated from Tamil, KSP called it an intentional or reckless statement that undermines the status of Kannada. The apex body for Kannada literature also stated that the actor has not issued a formal apology or made any sincere attempt to clarify his stand. In its filing, KSP contended that police resources should not be used to protect commercial interests. It added that public protests, boycott calls, or expressions of anger over the film are all part of democratic expression, and do not automatically amount to unlawful threats that merit state protection. "The very Constitution the petitioner invokes to seek protection also allows peaceful dissent and criticism. To oppose a film is not to endanger law and order," KSP said. On June 3, the court adjourned the hearing after the filmmakers assured that 'Thug Life' would not be released in Karnataka until a dialogue is held with the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC). The matter is now posted to June 13 for further hearing.

No 'Thug Life' release in Karnataka on June 5, no apology from Kamal

BENGALURU: It is an uncertain life for Kamal Haasan's Thug Life on screens in Karnataka. The movie will not be released in the state as part of its worldwide release on June 5, with the actor refusing to submit an apology for his controversial remark 'Kannada is born out of Tamil' despite an oral suggestion by the Karnataka High Court. Senior counsel Dhyan Chinnappa, representing petitioner Raajkamal Films International (RKFI), for which Kamal is a director, told the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday that the actor would not apologise since there was no malice in his statement. The counsel said Kamal had already communicated his explanation to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) that his intention is not to diminish Kannada in anyway. When Justice M Nagaprasanna asked why Kamal did not add a sentence of apology in his letter to KFCC, 'which is a declaration of justification of his statement', Chinnappa said that an apology is required where there is malice but Kamal had no ill intention while making the statement in question.

Bengaluru theatres appeal to HC to ensure smooth release of 'Thug Life'

BENGALURU: With just days left for Tamil film Thug Life to hit the screens nationwide, a few cinema theatres in Bengaluru are learnt to be moving the Karnataka High Court, seeking protection to ensure the film's safe and uninterrupted release on its scheduled date, June 5. In a writ petition already filed by Raajkamal Films International (WP No. 15589/2025), theatres are planning to implead and request police protection amid growing threats from Kannada groups opposing the film's screening. Theatres cite intimidation tactics, including threats of violence and property damage, should they proceed with the release. One theatre chain, represented by its authorised signatory, is learnt to be filing an urgent impleadment application in the writ petition filed by Kamal Haasan's production company, urging the court to allow it to join the case as a petitioner.
