Two dead in head-on Turnpike crash in Pompano Beach, authorities say
Two people died early Monday morning on Florida's Turnpike in Pompano Beach when a driver traveling in the wrong direction hit another car head on, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 12:50 a.m. about a half mile south of Atlantic Boulevard, FHP Trooper Raeford Griffin said.
A Jensen Beach man in a 2004 Acura TL sedan was driving southbound in the northbound lanes when he hit a 2019 Mercedes A220 sedan, Griffin said.

The Acura then hit a concrete barrier and went up in flames, according to the FHP.
Both drivers were killed, Griffin said. The driver of the Mercedes was a 19-year-old man from Oviedo, Florida, troopers say.
His passenger, a 22-year-old man from Key West, was taken to North Broward Medical Center with serious injuries, according to the FHP.
The FHP did not name any of the people involved in the crash. The age of the Acura driver was also not immediately known.
The northbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed from Commercial Boulevard to Coconut Creek Parkway in Broward through the Monday morning rush-hour traffic as troopers investigated the crash. The highway has since reopened.
