NCW chief Rahatkar calls for effective implementation of POSH Act in Maharashtra

Agency: Thane, Jul 18 (PTI) National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Friday called upon all stakeholders to ensure the Protection of Women from Sexual Harassment at Workplace (POSH) Act is implemented across Maharashtra 'not merely in letter but in spirit". She was speaking at a one-day training workshop organized at the District Planning Committee Hall for chairpersons of internal committees constituted under the POSH Act. The event was also attended by senior officials from the district administration, law enforcement, women and child development department. 'Let us all resolve together that Maharashtra will work for the respect of women and implement the law in such a way that it ensures real protection and justice at the workplace. The POSH Act applies equally to all workplaces, and its implementation is not optional. This committee has the powers of a civil court. Yet in many offices, it is inactive. Such negligence defeats the purpose of the Act," she said. Internal committees (ICs) must function actively and hold quarterly meetings to address grievances and build a safer working environment, while all complaints must be investigated impartially and confidentially, and resolutions must emerge through dialogue and cooperation, Rahatkar said. view comments First Published: July 18, 2025, 23:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. NCW organises AI training programme for women in Jodhpur

The National Commission for Women (NCW) organised an AI training programme in Jodhpur in which hundreds of women participants took part, an official said on Sunday. "The objective of Yashoda AI is to digitally empower women," said an official in a post on the social media platform X. Yashoda AI, also known as "Your AI SAKHI for Shaping Horizons with Digital Awareness," is a nationwide campaign by the NCW that empowers women, particularly those in rural and semi-urban areas, with digital and AI literacy, cybersecurity skills, and digital safety. According to the NCW, the programme focuses on providing training in local languages to ensure accessibility and promote women's participation in a technology-driven future. Earlier on Saturday, NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar held a meeting with administrative and police officials of eight districts of the Jodhpur division and officials from various departments to review the progress of women and child rights, laws, and schemes. She said in a post on X that some important topics discussed in the meeting included a review of more than 10 schemes related to women. She said the discussion emphasised on making schemes like 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao', 'Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana', 'Standup India', Lakhpati Didi, Maternal Health Scheme, eliminating female dropouts in education, skill development, self-help groups, women entrepreneurship, digital education, and services, more effective. The NCW chairperson also highlighted delays in police reports – leading to delays in grievance redressal. The need for an updated database of all police officers and helpline officials, to ensure effective communication and coordination, was also highlighted, she said. Emphasis was also laid on awareness programmes on various topics, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) enacted to protect children from sexual assault, sexual harassment, and pornography, she said. Effective implementation of 'One Stop Centre' - intended to support women affected by violence - and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana were also taken up for discussion, said Rahatkar. She said the officials were sensitised to ensure the benefits of Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana reach the last mile with the cooperation of public representatives. She said protection officers and local committees should work in coordination with the police administration. The officials were also asked to initiate Pre-Marital Communication Centres, review cases related to heinous crimes against women, such as dowry, rape, and cybercrime and strengthen women's police stations. The need to appoint trained counsellors and arrangement of proper infrastructure was also stressed, she said.

‘Insult to daughters of the nation': Amid row over MP minister's jibe, NCW chief Vijaya Rahatkar bats for Colonel Sofiya Qureshi

In a veiled dig at Madhya Pradesh minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Wednesday condemned the 'derogatory' statements made against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and appealed to people to use 'respectful language and attitude towards women in public life'. Rahatkar made the remarks in a post on X. While she did not name anybody, her post comes after Shah, a minister in the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh, said earlier this week that those who had widowed India's daughters were taught a lesson by Prime Minister Narendra Modi using their 'own sister'. The Congress had alleged that Shah was referring to Colonel Qureshi, who briefed the media on Operation Sindoor last week. In her post, Rahatkar wrote, 'It is extremely unfortunate that statements are being made by some responsible persons which are derogatory and unacceptable towards women. This not only hurts the dignity of women in our society but is also an insult to the daughters of the nation who are playing an important role in the security of the country.' 'Dear Colonel Sofiya Qureshi is a proud daughter of this nation, a sister of all Indians who love their country, who has served the country with courage and dedication. It is our responsibility to respect her hard work, dedication, and leadership skills. The entire country is proud of brave women like Colonel Sofiya, and such derogatory statements against her should be strongly condemned,' Rahatkar further wrote. Rahatkar also referred to the CBSE board exam results announced on Tuesday, in which girls outperformed boys, saying, 'When girls have once again proved their mettle by performing brilliantly in the latest CBSE results, it becomes even more important that we adopt a respectful attitude towards women. To move towards a progressive nation, it is necessary that women move ahead and lead in every field. Everyone is urged to adopt a respectful language and attitude towards women in public life.' She added: 'Underestimating the participation and contribution of women is not only unacceptable but also an obstacle to the development of the country.' Rahatkar's post came on a day when Aam Aadmi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh criticised Shah for his remarks, saying he 'should be removed from the Cabinet and arrested'.

‘Irresponsible, breach of privacy': Women's commission on trolling of foreign secretary's daughter

The National Commission for Women on Monday condemned the 'reprehensible online abuse' faced by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and his family after he announced that India and Pakistan had agreed to halt the conflict. In a statement, the commission's Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar said that sharing the contact details of Misri's daughter was 'extremely irresponsible and a serious breach of privacy which puts her safety at risk'. "भारत के विदेश सचिव श्री विक्रम मिश्री के परिवार, विशेष रूप से उनकी बेटी के खिलाफ किए गए निंदनीय ऑनलाइन दुर्व्यवहार की राष्ट्रीय महिला आयोग कड़े शब्दों में निंदा करता है। विदेश सचिव की बेटी की व्यक्तिगत संपर्क जानकारी साझा करना गंभीर रूप से गैर-जिम्मेदाराना काम है। यह गोपनीयता का… — NCW (@NCWIndia) May 12, 2025 Misri, along with Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, had been conducting press briefings since May 7 to give updates about the Indian military's strikes – codenamed Operation Sindoor – on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. On Saturday, Misri's announcement that India and Pakistan had agreed to stop all firing at 5 pm and his subsequent statement that Islamabad had violated the ceasefire had angered some Indians, who believed that the conflict should continue. Several social media users abused Misri. Abusive messages were also directed at the foreign secretary's daughter, with several users criticising her for providing legal aid to Rohingya refugees. Some users disclosed his phone number and those of his family members. Rahatkar said on Monday that 'such personal attacks on family members of one of the most senior civil servants of the country like Shri Misri are not only unacceptable but also morally indefensible'. 'We urge all to maintain decency, civility and restraint in their behaviour,' Rahatkar added. Several politicians rallied to Misri's defence, pointing out that the diplomat was merely conveying a decision that had been made by members of the government. Stating that Misri is an 'honest, hardworking diplomat', All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi expressed support for the foreign secretary. 'Our civil servants work under the executive, this must be remembered and they shouldn't be blamed for the decisions taken by the executive/or any political leadership,' Owaisi had said. Congress leader Salman Anees Soz had said that Misri had 'done India proud'. 'No amount of trolling can diminish his service to the country,' said Soz. 'If you can't say thank you, learn to shut up.' The strikes on May 7 were in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 persons on April 22. The Pakistani military retaliated were killed in the firing.
