Substandard quality in 3,104 drugs, 245 found spurious in FY25: JP Nadda
Since December 2022, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has inspected 905 drug manufacturing and testing units, resulting in 694 regulatory actions, Nadda said Rahul Goreja New Delhi Between April 2024 and March 2025, a total of 3,104 drug samples were declared not of standard quality, while 245 were found to be spurious or adulterated, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. These results came from 1,16,323 drug samples tested across the country during the period. The data was shared by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda in response to a question on the prevalence of substandard and spurious drugs in the country. Nadda also stated that between April 2023 and March 2024, a total of 1,06,150 drug samples were tested, out of which 2,988 were found to be not of standard quality and 282 were identified as spurious. Risk-based inspections and regulatory action Since December 2022, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has inspected 905 drug manufacturing and testing units, resulting in 694 regulatory actions, including stop production or testing orders, licence suspensions or cancellations, warning letters, and show-cause notices, Nadda said. He further added that manufacturers whose drugs fail quality checks are required to immediately recall and halt further distribution of those batches. As for whether the government plans to publish a list of compliant drug manufacturers to rebuild public trust, Nadda said that CDSCO already uploads alerts about drugs declared not of standard quality, spurious, misbranded or adulterated on its website under the 'Drug Alert' section. Funding and policy initiatives To address broader challenges in drug quality, the government is implementing the Strengthening of Pharmaceutical Industry (SPI) scheme, which includes support for common facilities, technology upgrades for small and medium enterprises, and promotion of research and knowledge-sharing. The ministry of health and family welfare is also running a centrally sponsored scheme - Strengthening of States' Drug Regulatory System (SSDRS) - with an approved outlay of ₹850 crore, Nadda said, adding that the funding has supported the construction of 17 new drug testing labs and the upgradation of 24 existing labs.

Mamata slams NITI Aayog for map error showing Bihar as West Bengal
The error, found in the "Summary Report for the State of West Bengal" published on NITI Aayog's website, incorrectly depicted the territory of Bihar in place of West Bengal Rahul Goreja New Delhi West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday wrote to NITI Aayog Vice Chairperson Suman K Bery, expressing 'deep concern and unequivocal disapproval' over a map error in an official publication by the government think tank. The error, found in the 'Summary Report for the State of West Bengal' published on NITI Aayog's website, incorrectly showed Bihar's territory in place of West Bengal on the Indian map. In a letter dated July 9, Banerjee said, 'Such a grave lapse in an official document of a premier national institution is not merely a technical error but an affront to the identity and dignity of the State of West Bengal.' She further described the mistake as 'a blunder in an official publication of NITI Aayog' and said it 'reflects an alarming lack of diligence and respect towards the States of the Union.' The CM further stated that such incidents raise 'legitimate concerns" about the rigor and reliability of the institution's work, "which policymakers and citizens alike depend upon for accurate and informed decision-making.' She added that the error 'casts significant doubt on the quality, authenticity and credibility of reports and publications of NITI Aayog.' Calling it unacceptable, Banerjee said the West Bengal government 'strongly condemns this inaccuracy' and urged the think tank to issue a clarification and apology. She also asked the institution to take 'immediate corrective action to rectify the document and to institute robust mechanisms to prevent such lapses in the future.'

Karnataka HC bars police from filing chargesheet in Bengaluru stampede case
The petitioners requested the court to issue the restraining order, arguing that filing a chargesheet before the court ruled on the validity of the FIRs could affect their case Rahul Goreja New Delhi The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday ordered that the police must seek its prior approval before submitting any final report or chargesheet against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), event organiser DNA, or other parties in connection with the stampede incident at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, according to a report by Bar and Bench. The bench of Justice SR Krishna Kumar passed an interim order while hearing a batch of petitions filed by RCB, its marketing head Nikhil Sosale, DNA, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), seeking to quash the first information reports (FIRs) filed against them. Why? The petitioners requested the court to issue the restraining order, arguing that filing a chargesheet before the court ruled on the validity of the FIRs could affect their case, the report added. In response, the court directed the state not to file the chargesheet.' "Relist on August 5. Meanwhile, respondents not to file final report without leave of the court. Interim order extended till the next date of hearing," the Court ordered, as quoted by Bar and Bench. "Otherwise if you file then they (petitioners) will say permit us to amend, fresh petition. So you complete everything," it added, as quoted by LiveLaw. However, the state government's counsel informed the court, "My instruction is one month is required for investigation. And nothing will happen in meantime". Earlier, the court had granted the petitioners interim protection from arrest until August 5. Background A large crowd assembled outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 to mark RCB's maiden IPL title. The celebration, however, ended in tragedy when a stampede occurred, leaving 11 people dead and 56 others injured. The state has held RCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) responsible for the stampede claiming that the organisers never sought permission for the celebratory event and had instead 'invited the whole world' through social media.

Scare on SpiceJet flight to Pune as window trim detaches mid-air
SpiceJet has said that cabin pressure remained normal throughout the flight and that the dislodged window trim had no impact on safety or structural integrity Rahul Goreja New Delhi An internal component on a SpiceJet flight from Goa to Pune dislodged mid-air on July 1, sparking concern among passengers, The Indian Express reported on Wednesday. However, in a statement shared with the publication, a SpiceJet spokesperson said cabin pressure remained normal throughout the flight and there was no impact on passenger safety. The flight, SG-1080, was scheduled to depart from Goa at 5.20 p.m. but took off an hour and a half late, according to a passenger quoted by The Indian Express. The passenger also claimed that the flight had been delayed the previous day due to a 'technical issue'. 'Half an hour after take-off, the window (behind him) just popped out. The woman (sitting on that seat) got scared and it was damn concerning. There is a protective layer behind the window that protects us from the elements outside, and it was intact, but it is still concerning. This is not done,' the passenger said. Responding to a query on the matter, SpiceJet told The Indian Express: 'A cosmetic window frame on one of SpiceJet's Q400 aircraft became loose during flight and was found dislodged. It is important to note that this was a non-structural trim component, fitted onto the window for the purpose of shade, and did not compromise the safety or integrity of the aircraft in any way. Cabin pressurisation remained normal throughout the flight, and there was no impact on passenger safety.' The airline added that the frame was fixed upon landing.
