What Glasgow's George Square will look like when it reopens in 2026
The construction company working on Glasgow's George Square say the work will be completed by August next year. Rainton Construction Scotland was awarded the contract and are working on the city centre area as part of the Glasgow Avenues Programme. The project is aimed at making the centre of Glasgow more 'welcoming, greener and easier to navigate for residents, business and visitors. The work began in May with statues removed from the area. All 11 of them, including tributes to Robert Burns, James Watt and Queen Victoria, will be returned to the area when George Square reopens. Artists impressions have been released of what the site will look like when the redevelopment is finished. The work will continues over the next year with an upgrade to all surfaces with natural stone products, the installation of sensory 'play' areas, new seating and picnic stations, a raised lawn platform and feature lighting and flexible event spaces in place.
