India: Monsoon rains bring floods, chaos to Mumbai – DW – 05/26/2025

Authorities in India have upgraded their weather warning to "red" for Mumbai and surrounding areas as heavy rains continue to lash coastal cities. Heavy monsoon rains lashed India's coastal state of Maharashtra on Monday, disrupting traffic and prompting authorities to issue warnings. Parts of India's commercial capital, Mumbai, saw waterlogging and train delays due to incessant rain. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday upgraded its existing weather warnings from "orange" alert to "red" alert for Mumbai and surrounding areas. Shinde also appealed to the citizens to follow advisories issued by the authorities and avoid leaving their homes. Monsoon arrives early The heavy rainfall comes a day after the IMD announced the onset of monsoon rains in Maharashtra, ten days ahead of the actual date of onset of June 5. This is the earliest recorded date of the monsoon in Maharashtra since 1990, according to the Indian newspaper The Indian Express. Traffic remained distrupted in Mumbai due to heavy rains Image: Rajanish Kakade/AP Photo/picture alliance In Kerala, which is the southernmost Indian state, the monsoon arrived on Saturday, eight days earlier than usual, marking the earliest arrival in 16 years. The monsoon provides nearly 70% of the rain India requires to recharge its aquifers and reservoirs. The country's farmers highly depend on the annual June-September rains to grow several crops. (AP Photo/Rajanish Kakade) MUMBAI, India (AP) — Mumbai Indians sealed the final playoffs spot in the Indian Premier League with a 59-run victory over Delhi Capitals at Wankhede on Wednesday. Delhi, which needed a win to keep its playoffs hopes alive, folded for 121 in 18.2 overs on a tricky wicket in reply to Mumbai's competitive total of 180-5. Advertisement Delhi had kept Mumbai in check before Suryakumar Yadav (73 not out) and Naman Dhir (24 not out) excelled in the final two overs, which produced 48 runs for the home team. Dhir smashed fast bowler Mukesh Kumar (2-48) for two fours and two sixes in the final over after Yadav had started the over with a six to complete his half-century off 36 balls. Sri Lankan fast bowler Dushmanta Chameera (1-54) then gave away 21 in the final over to give five-time champion Mumbai an over-par total to defend. Delhi didn't get momentum from the onset in its run-chase as Faf du Plessis, who led the team in the absence of ill Axar Patel, and Lokesh Rahul fell inside the first three overs. Advertisement Mitchell Santner then ran through the middle-order with 3-11 off his four overs and Jasprit Bumrah picked up 3-12 to seal Mumbai's place in the final four with 16 points. Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings have already qualified for the playoffs. ___ AP cricket:

(AP Photo/Rui Vieira, File) India great Virat Kohli retired from test cricket Monday after playing 123 matches in his 14-year red-ball career. Kohli made his test debut in 2011 against West Indies and has been India's standout batter since Sachin Tendulkar's retirement in 2013. Advertisement Kohli scored 9,230 runs, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries, at a test batting average of 46.85. He also led India in 68 test matches and was India's most successful captain with 40 test wins. The former India captain is one of the highest-profile people in cricket, with 271 million followers on Instagram and almost 68 million on X, and he owns batting records in the longest and the limited-overs formats. He's expected to continue playing one-day international cricket, and he's still heavily involved in the lucrative Twenty20 Indian Premier League. Kohli also led India to the International Cricket Council's No. 1 ranking in test cricket after taking over from Mahendra Singh Dhoni in 2014-15, and helped his side maintain a stronghold on that position for five years. In 2018, he guided India to its first ever test series victory against Australia in Australia. Advertisement 'As I step away from this format, it's not easy — but it feels right,' Kohli posted on Instagram. 'It's been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It's tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I'll carry for life.'
