Preliminary finding
It was disturbing to read that the Air India AI 171 fight crash was possibly triggered by a cut-off of the fuel to the engines. This could be a preliminary finding and further investigations are in progress. The US Federal Aviation Administration had advised as early as December 2018, that the spring-loaded switch could malfunction, under some circumstances. At any time, about 15,000 to 20,000 commercial aeroplanes are in the air during peak hours. It is terrifying to think that the fuel could choke automatically, in some planes, for some reason. What will happen if the flight is cruising at 20,000 or 30,000-feet height? The very thought is chilling. Air travel is very common in our global connected world. Hopefully the investigations will zero into the precise triggers of the accident, so that people are not petrified to fly. We cannot have a situation where people pray every time before boarding a flight or even avoid air travel. Rajendra Aneja, Mumbai, India

Wanted: a ceasefire in Gaza
Feel strongly about these letters, or any other aspects of the news? Share your views by emailing us your Letter to the Editor at letters@ or filling in this Google form . Submissions should not exceed 400 words, and must include your full name and address, plus a phone number for verification Now that a ceasefire seems to be holding between Israel and Iran, it is time to focus on a ceasefire in Gaza . US President Donald Trump and Arab countries can play an energetic role in securing peace in the region. People are dying in Gaza, waiting for medicine, food and water. Even aid workers have been killed. The world cannot turn a blind eye to the people of Gaza. Israel and Hamas must end their warped relationship, which has caused so much bloodshed, and join hands to develop the region. Hamas should unconditionally release Israeli hostages. Israel should stop all attacks on Gaza. Nations are exploring space, from Mars to the moon. Can't we solve our problems on Earth and wipe away Gaza's tears? Rajendra Aneja, Mumbai

What happened to Air India flight 171?
Iran and Israel must start talking to each other In reference to the report Huge explosions heard as major Iranian rocket attack hits Israel (June 19): The new war between Israel and Iran is most unfortunate. It will destabilise the entire Middle East. The world is already besieged by wars in Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan. All wars are horrible. Innocent people die. Economies come to a standstill. Lives are disrupted. Jobs disappear. Common people pay the price of wars, initiated by their leaders. Iran may not cease its nuclear programme by threats and bombings. The isolation of Iran is likely to be counter-productive. Too many nations have lethal weapons that can destroy our planet. We have to be very circumspect in resolving issues. War is just not an option any more to resolve matters. So can Iran and Israel just talk to each other, instead of fighting? This is the appeal of a common man. Rajendra Aneja, Mumbai, India What explains the Air India tragedy? With regard to the report Funerals begin for 279 killed in Air India crash (June 15):Last week's crash of Air India flight 171 was utterly heartbreaking. This is undoubtedly one of the worst aviation disasters in recent times. The aircraft, which was relatively young – less than 12 years old – and considered to be one of the reliable models in service, now comes under scrutiny. It is premature however to place blame without the full facts. The investigation must be conducted thoroughly to uncover the real causes behind this tragedy and to put an end to all the speculation of what could have gone wrong. Let us hope that the investigation brings clarity, justice, and measures to prevent such mishaps in the future. K Ragavan, Bengaluru, India Crucial to heed fire alarms With regard to John Dennehy and Greg Tanner's report Dubai Marina fire: Community steps up to help those forced to flee (June 15): I hope everyone was safe and residents of the tower didn't lose too many important belongings. As an aside to the fire in this particular apartment, I wonder if perhaps some people no longer react to fire alarms with the urgency they call for, since in many towers they go off every other week as a part of a fire drill. Besides the problem of fire alarms sometimes not going off, people can't really know for sure if it's a real emergency or not unless they step out of their apartments to check.

Plight of refugees
When I read about the plight of refugees from Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan, I am reminded about the sad story of my own parents. They came to India as refugees, after the partitioning of British India in 1947. They were escorted by the Indian army and brought to the newly founded India at night. They spent their first night in India on a street in Amritsar. Next day, they found their way to a refugee camp. Then they could at least get some food to eat. From then onwards, it was a struggle for my parents to make a living, find a job and do well in life. Like the lives of millions of other refugees, their life was a saga of hard work, struggle, and sacrifice. All that they had earned and built before partition was gone. They had to start life from scratch, without a home or money. It is not easy to complete one's education, find a job, make a home and educate the children, without any money in a new country. When I look back in my life, I visualise all the struggles and sacrifices of my parents. Moreover, refugees have to abandon their properties and belongings, when they move to a new country. The memory of what is gone or what could have been, is painful indeed. The life of a refugee is tough. So, when I read about the refugees in various global conflicts, my heart goes out to them. I can only imagine the efforts they will have to put in to rebuild their own lives and impart education to their children. I also know that we can prevent wars and refugees, if we handle global conflicts diplomatically and sensitively. Unfortunately, we are becoming dehumanised societies, in many parts of the world. Let humanity prevail
The plight of the people of Gaza is really heartrending. They are unable to access water, food and medicines. The area of land which they occupy has been shrinking in the current battle. Their children are missing school for years now. Generations of children are losing the opportunity to build better lives. Hamas should release the remaining Israeli hostages as a sign of good faith. Perhaps, it will create an atmosphere of mutual trust and kindle a peaceful settlement. Friendly countries of both the warring parties should lead efforts to restore normalcy in Gaza. The people of Gaza also have the right to lead peaceful family lives. Rajendra Aneja, Mumbai, India
