2 fake auto drivers rob elderly women in city, held from Delhi
Jaipur: City police Saturday arrested two members of a Gujarat-based gang in Delhi for posing as auto-rickshaw drivers and robbing elderly women during staged rides in Jaipur. The accused—71-year-old Govind Rajkotia and his 23-year-old accomplice Ashwin Mithapura—had been hiding in a makeshift settlement in Delhi's Raghuvir Nagar after robbing two women on June 30.
DCP (South) Digant Anand said Rajkotia, the gang's mastermind, tried to evade capture by shaving his head and trimming his moustache. However, based on CCTV footage and questioning over 500 auto drivers, Jaipur police tracked and arrested the duo. The gang's method involved offering suspiciously cheap rides to elderly women, then striking mid-journey. On June 30, Sangeeta Nandwani (66) was assaulted and robbed of 40 gram of gold bangles.
The same day, Hemlata Vasvani lost a 28 gram bangle after boarding a similar auto near the same temple.
Police said the gang had been active in Jaipur and Delhi since 2014, targeting women near temples. Rajkotia, driven by gambling and personal loss, funded his lavish lifestyle through theft. TNN
