Farmer swept away, 256 rescued, 27 roads shut as Gadchiroli fights floods
Nagpur: Heavy rains in Gadchiroli over the last three days has led to severe flooding, submerging several villages, leaving hundreds stranded, and severing vital transport links.
A 46-year-old farmer, Raju Vishwanath Tumram from Khurja Deshpur in Armori taluka, was swept away in a swollen nullah on Tuesday.
Overflowing rivers and nullahs like Pal Nadi and Gadhavi Nadi blocked 27 roads, including National Highway 353C (Gadchiroli-Armori-Chamorshi) and State Highway 377 (Kurkheda-Vairagad).
The India Meteorological Department has issued heavy rainfall alert for the next 24 hours, raising fears about worsening flood situation.
The district administration led by collector Avishyant Panda is mobilising all resources as rivers like Wainganga and Godavari breached danger levels, isolating entire communities.
Over 250 people, including 33 pregnant women who were close to their delivery date, have been rescued from raging floodwaters. In Desaiganj taluka, 16 residents from Sawangi and 35 from Virshi Tukum villages were evacuated to the zilla parishad school and Shiv Mandir, respectively.
