2 killed as truck goes on rampage, drags car for 1.5 km in Sitapur
Lucknow: A speeding truck collided with a car on National Highway-30 in Sitapur's Maholi area late Thursday, killing two people and injuring three others. The collision was so intense that the car got wedged under the truck's front bumper and was dragged for 1.5 km.
According to inspector Dilip Kumar Chaubey, the car — carrying five people — was heading from Maholi bypass towards Mailani when it was hit by a truck on the way to Shahjahanpur from Sitapur.
He said the truck dragged the car for 1.5 km, also striking a 42-year-old cyclist Saroj from Jalalpur village and severely injuring him before finally stopping at the Badagaon overbridge.
According to reports, the truck driver continued driving despite attempts by passing motorists in a Thar SUV to stop him, until the badly damaged car got wedged in the truck's wheels.
The driver then tried to flee but was caught by the police.
The victims were identified as Sunil Mishra (45), a school teacher from Vikas Nagar in Lucknow; Sanjeev Gupta (50), a resident of Awasthi Tola; Ram Autar Singh (50) from Mahsuniya Ganj; and Vipul Mishra alias Lalu (38), also of Awasthi Tola in Sitapur.
The injured were rushed to the Community Health Centre in Maholi, where doctors declared Sanjeev Gupta and Ram Autar Singh dead on arrival. The remaining three, including the cyclist, were referred to the district hospital in a critical condition.
The accident cast a pall of gloom over Maholi town, especially among the local trader community, as two of the deceased were prominent businessmen.
Both the truck and its driver are in police custody.
