High commissions, platform fee: Namakkal hotel owners stop deliveries via food aggregators

NAMAKKAL: The Namakkal City and Taluk Hotel Owners' Association has stopped all food delivery services through Swiggy and Zomato from July 1, causing a major disruption in the region's food delivery sector. This decision was made due to increasing dissatisfaction among local hotel owners over high and inconsistent commission charges, hidden fees and unilateral discount policies set by these platforms. After negotiations with Swiggy and Zomato failed, services have been halted as per a resolution adopted at a recent meeting led by association president M Ramkumar. Ramkumar explained that commissions can reach up to 33% for some restaurants, making it impossible to keep prices affordable for customers. For example, a dish priced at Rs 150 in a restaurant is listed for around Rs 230 on these platforms due to high commissions. This leads customers to believe restaurants are overcharging, when in reality, the platforms take the excess. The association demanded a standard commission cap at 18%, transparent breakdowns of all charges and the removal of hidden fees. However, as these demands were not met, the association proceeded with the service halt.

Railway loco running staff stage protest seeking adequate rest

Members of SRMU Loco Running Staff (LRS) Wing staged a demonstration here on Tuesday pressing for better working conditions for locopilots and assistant locopilots. Speaking on the occasion, Southern Railway Mazdoor Union division secretary J.M. Rafi complained that running staff working in goods trains were being subjected to longer working hours. The administration should stick to the Railway Board's directive that the locopilots and ALPs should return to their headquarters within 48 hours. He also demanded to fill all the vacancies in the posts of running staff. The running staff should be given 30 hours of rest every week. The running staff of passenger trains should not be made to bypass their headquarters. The present crew link for express and passenger trains should be changed to ensure that they do not get night for more than two days a week in the interest of railway safety, said the union assistant divisional secretary V. Ramkumar. Better quality of food in running rooms and early provision of mutual transfer for running staff were some of the other demands. LRS wing divisional president Ravishankar and secretary Alaguraja were present.

Sivaji Ganesan bungalow case: Financing firm withdraws plea

CHENNAI: The appeal against an order lifting attachment of parts of the T Nagar bungalow of late actor Sivaji Ganesan was withdrawn by the film financing firm Dhanabakkiam Enterprises following an out of court settlement of the money dispute between the firm and the actor's son Ramkumar and grandson Dusshyanth . The counsel for the finance company on Monday requested the first bench of Chief Justice KR Shriram and Justice Sunder Mohan to permit withdrawal of the appeal since an out of court settlement was reached between both parties. Subsequently, the bench disposed of the case. The appeal was filed against the order of the single judge (Justice Abdul Quddhose) passed on April 21, 2025 lifting another order to attach parts of the bungalow extending to 13,310 sq ft out of the sprawling 22 grounds and 440 sq ft bungalow and plot, for default of a loan availed by Ramkumar's son Dusshyanth Ramkumar. Dusshyanth had borrowed Rs 3.74 crore for his company, Eshan Productions, from Dhanabakkiam Enterprises in 2017 for meeting the expenses of production of the movie 'Jagajala Killadi'. When the money was not returned as per the agreement, the lender approached the court and an arbitrator was appointed. On May 5, 2024, he passed an order for payment of Rs 9.02 crore including interest. However, this order was not complied with. Dhanabakkiam Enterprises filed the execution petition seeking orders for attachment of properties as the judgment-debtors owe an outstanding amount of Rs 9.39 crore. However, Ramkumar's brother Prabhu filed an application in the court praying for lifting the attachment on the ground that the former did not have ownership in the bungalow and he was the sole owner. Allowing this application, the court lifted the attachment order.

Namakkal hotel owners' association threatens to halt supply of food to online platforms

NAMAKKAL: The Namakkal City and Taluk Hotel Owners' Association on Monday decided to halt supply of food items to online platforms from July 1 if they don't resolve issues over commissions. A resolution to this effect was adopted at a meeting of the association chaired by its president Ramkumar. The association said online food delivery services, including Swiggy and Zomato should agree to a nominal commission when entering contracts with hotel owners. "However, they currently deduct various fees like advertising expenses, delivery charges and GST, resulting in reduced payments to hotel owners for food," Ramkumar said. Furthermore, they apply different commission rates to each establishment, he alleged. Ramkumar said in a food transaction valued at Rs 10,000, the online companies were deducting up to Rs 6,000 towards commissions and other hidden charges. "This practice leads to significant financial losses for hotel owners," they said. He said online food companies should hold discussions with the association by June 30 to resolve the commission issue. "If that doesn't happen, we will stop supplying food items to all online food companies starting July 1," he warned.
