Pakistan, Russia aim to remove barriers
Listen to article Pakistan and Russia on Tuesday deliberated on key issues concerning bilateral trade in the agriculture sector and committed to deepening cooperation and addressing trade barriers. The issues came up for discussion during a meeting between Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain and the ambassador of the Russian Federation. The minister highlighted the challenges faced by Pakistan's citrus and potato exports to Russia during the current year. He emphasised the importance of resolving such issues to ensure smooth continuation of trade and mutual economic benefits. He informed the ambassador that the Department of Plant Protection (DPP) had conducted a comprehensive technical investigation into the concerns raised by the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (FSVPS) of the Russian Federation. The DPP's findings were supported by scientific literature, seasonal pest survey reports and laboratory results, which collectively demonstrated that claims of presence of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly in Pakistan were not substantiated. Following extensive technical exchange, the FSVPS withdrew the specific objection to citrus imports. In response, the ambassador assured the minister that he would immediately take up the matter with relevant authorities in the Russian Federation to facilitate the clearance of potato consignments.

SAB okays 0.5 MT import of sugar
ISLAMABAD: The Sugar Advisory Board (SAB) on Monday okayed the import of 0.5 million tons of sugar after the government exported the commodity in a large quantity in the current financial year, which led to a sharp increase in domestic sugar prices. The meeting of the SAB, which met with Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, approved the import of 0.5 million of sugar to control rising prices and ensure a consistent supply of the commodity in the market. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the country exported 765,734 metric tons of sugar between July and May this fiscal year, earning Rs114 billion. However, as expected following this export domestic sugar prices rose sharply and hit a record Rs190 per kg. Import of 250,000MT raw sugar: policy to be submitted to Cabinet During the meeting, the minister said that the decision to import sugar had become unavoidable due to a nationwide shortfall in supply and sharp price hikes. He attributed the recent surge in sugar prices largely to unjustified price increases by sugar mill owners. The minister emphasised that all formalities regarding the import will be completed within the next few days, and the imported sugar will be brought into the market at the earliest to provide relief to consumers. To tackle the crisis, the government has already initiated urgent measures and decided to implement strict monitoring of both sugar supply and pricing across the country. 'The situation demands immediate action. Stabilising sugar prices and ensuring its availability is the government's top priority,' said the minister. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

PM for early finalisation of Pakistan's EVs Policy 2025
LAHORE: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Saturday asked the authorities concerned for early finalization of the 'Electric Vehicles Policy 2025' in consultation with all stakeholders. He passed these directions while chairing a meeting, here on Saturday, to review the policy framework for the promotion of the electric vehicles industry in the country. During the meeting, the draft of the Electric Vehicles Policy 2025 was discussed in detail. Emphasized the need for swift and priority-based measures to promote electric motorcycles, scooters, three-wheelers, cars, and buses across Pakistan, the premier underscored the importance of setting up charging infrastructure, including charging stations and battery swapping facilities, to support the expansion of the EV ecosystem. He also called for facilitating enhancement of the local manufacturing capacity of electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers. Sindh govt allocates budget for EV taxis, scooters in FY26 The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Rana Tanveer Hussain, Ahad Khan Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Special Assistant to PM Haroon Akhtar Khan and concerned senior government officials.
