Jharkhand HC rejects bail plea of ex-Minister Alamgir Alam in tender scam case
Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court on Friday rejected the bail plea of former state minister and senior Congress leader Alamgir Alam in connection with the high-profile money laundering case linked to a tender-commission scam in the state's Rural Development Department. Alam, who has been in judicial custody for the past 14 months, faced a setback after the bench of Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad denied him bail. The court had reserved its order on June 20 after hearing arguments from both sides. During the proceedings, advocate Zoheb Hussain represented the Enforcement Directorate (ED) via video conferencing, while senior advocate S. Nagamuthu appeared for Alamgir Alam. The former minister had approached the High Court after his bail plea was earlier rejected by the Ranchi-based Special PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) Court. However, he failed to get relief here as well. The ED had arrested Alam on May 15 last year in connection with a probe into a commission racket allegedly operating within the Rural Development Department. Before that, on May 6, the ED had carried out extensive raids at the premises of Alam's Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Sanjeev Lal, his domestic help Jahangir Alam, and several contractors. The raids led to the cash recovery of Rs 30 crore from Jahangir Alam's residence, Rs 2.93 crore from contractor Munna Singh, and Rs 2.14 crore from contractor Rajiv Singh. Investigations revealed that a large-scale commission racket was going on in the awarding of tenders, with a significant portion allegedly funneled back to Alamgir Alam. Alam was a prominent figure in the Jharkhand cabinet, serving as the number two minister under both Hemant Soren and Champai Soren. He also held the post of Congress Legislature Party leader in the state assembly. He resigned from both positions shortly after his arrest.

Chhattisgarh businessman Siddharth Singhania arrested in Jharkhand liquor scam
Ranchi: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested Chhattisgarh-based businessman Siddharth Singhania in connection with the multi-crore Jharkhand liquor scam. Singhania was apprehended during a raid conducted by the Jharkhand ACB near Raipur on Thursday. Following his arrest, he was produced in a local court in Chhattisgarh. The agency is now preparing to bring him to Ranchi on a transit remand for further interrogation. According to officials, the ACB had earlier obtained an arrest warrant against Singhania from a special court in Ranchi on June 12. Earlier, he had been issued several summonses to appear for questioning, but he failed to respond or present himself before the investigators. The case took a turn during an earlier raid by the Chhattisgarh ACB at Singhania's residence in connection with the Chhattisgarh liquor scam. During the search, officials recovered a diary that reportedly contained explosive details pointing to a larger conspiracy involving a liquor syndicate operating in Jharkhand. The diary allegedly outlined the syndicate's strategy for managing the liquor trade in Jharkhand and included plans to "identify and manage" those who are posing a threat to its operations in the state. So far, the ACB's probe in Jharkhand has uncovered a scam worth Rs 38 crore. A total of 16 individuals have been named in the case, including high-ranking officials and private sector operatives. Seven people have already been arrested, including senior IAS officer Vinay Kumar Chaubey, retired IAS officer Amit Prakash, and Jharkhand Administrative Service officer Gajendra Singh. On Tuesday, the ACB secured arrest warrants against seven more individuals from Gujarat and Maharashtra believed to be linked to the scam. The agency has also issued a warrant earlier against Ranchi-based automobile businessman Vinay Kumar Singh, who similarly failed to appear for questioning despite being served notice. With fresh arrests and warrants, the ACB's crackdown on the liquor syndicate continues to widen, exposing a nexus involving businessmen, bureaucrats, and companies.

Amid summer rush, tourists irked over deteriorating infra at Ranchi waterfalls
Ranchi: With summer holidays at its peak and all popular tourist spots, especially Jharkhand's picturesque waterfalls, facing a massive rush of people from all corners, popular destinations like Hundru, Dassam, and Jonha are facing a crisis. Basic public infrastructure at these sites, including benches, shade structures, toilets, and drinking water facilities, has fallen into state of disrepair, dampening the tourist experience and also raising safety concerns. Visitors, arriving for a scenic and refreshing escape, are now met instead with broken seating, cracked concrete platforms, rusted railings, and defunct restrooms. For families with children and elderly visitors, the lack of clean and usable amenities has become a major deterrent. A tourist from Bokaro, Priya Mandal, who visited Jonha Falls last week, said, "The benches were either broken or missing entirely. We had to stand or sit on the ground under the scorching sun. The toilets were so dirty, we couldn't use them. It was quite disheartening." Local vendors who run food and souvenir stalls near the waterfalls echoed tourists' concerns. "Tourist inflow is good but everyone is returning with complaints. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo More people will visit if the government starts repair work on the facilities," said Ramesh Mahato, a tea stall operator at Dassam Falls. Meanwhile, Shivendra Kumar, tourism nodal officer, Ranchi, confirmed that the issue has been officially addressed. "We have received detailed reports on the abysmal condition of public infrastructure at major waterfall sites. We've already forwarded a proposal for repair and restoration to the department," he added. "Clearance is awaited. Once funds are sanctioned, we will immediately begin a phased restoration of benches, rest areas, toilets, and safety signage," Kumar said. Tourist footfall has seen a noticeable uptick since the start of the summer break, with thousands thronging these spots each weekend. Yet, the influx has only worsened the visible neglect. Another visitor from Dhurwa, Sangeeta Mishra, who visited the Hundru falls, said, "It was shocking to see the condition of the toilets. There was no water, no cleanliness, and the odours were foul. We cut short our trip because the kids were feeling uneasy. It is hard to enjoy nature when basic hygiene is missing." Many tourists have begun pressing for time-bound action. "We aren't asking for luxury, just clean toilets and safe seating. If Jharkhand wants to promote eco-tourism, these basics must be non-negotiable," said Ranchi-based entrepreneur Manish Singh, who recently visited Hundru Falls with friends.
