Admin to shift protest site from outside Raj Bhavan
1 2 3 Ranchi: The district administration has decided to shift protest zone from outside Raj Bhavan to a new designated area near Naga Baba Khatal Vendor Market, citing traffic management challenges following the completion of the Ratu Road flyover. Deputy commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri said, "With the Ratu Road flyover becoming operational, its ramp near Raj Bhavan has turned into a critical traffic point. Continuous sit-ins outside Raj Bhavan add to congestion. We are therefore relocating the protest site to manage traffic better while ensuring people's right to protest is protected." The administration has identified a roadside patch beside Naga Baba Khatal, previously used for the Ranchi Municipal Corporation's night parking, as the new protest zone. The space is situated just in front of the garbage transfer station in the area. SDO Utkarsh Kumar said, "The Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression. Keeping that in mind, protestors will be provided a dedicated site for demonstrations. Transition has begun." However, the move has drawn criticism from several people who feel the shift undermines the symbolic importance of protesting outside the Governor's office. Rajmasih Tigga who was staging a sit-in for 100 consecutive days at the Raj Bhavan protest site said, "The relocation sidelines our voices and dilutes the impact of our demonstration." Despite the objections, authorities said the decision is aimed at balancing civic order with citizens' democratic rights. The new site will soon be equipped with basic facilities to accommodate protestors, officials added.

Low rank for Ranchi in Swacch Survekshan
1 2 3 Ranchi: The absence of civic amenities in the state capital was exposed after Ranchi finished at the 37th spot among 40 cities, with over 10 lakh population, in the Centre's Swacch Sarvekshand of 2024-25, whose rankings were announced on Thursday. While Ranchi Municipal Corporation failed to receive any star in the 'Garbage Free City' category, the city's performances in five out of eight parameters such as door-to-door waste collection, waste segregation at source, cleanliness of public toilets, recorded a sharp dip. However, the city recorded an improvement in remediation of dumpsites as its rating went up by 15% from the previous survey. A day after the poor show, city residents slammed the RMC for its poor management of civic issues. "There is no road, lane left behind in the city where scattered mounds of garbage are not present. Citizens are not all getting services that valued the taxes they are paying to RMC. RMC issued notices to many holding tax defaulters and threatened to discontinue water supply connections, but they themselves failed to meet up to their commitments," Deepesh Nirala, president of Ranchi Citizen Forum, said. Urban development secretary Sunil Kumar said although RMC tried its best, lapses on part of the surveyors may have resulted in poor performance. "To elevate our ranks, next year the department will plan accordingly on the parameters incorporating various technologies, so that we can secure better marks," he said.

1.36cr vendor market opens for business in Morabadi
Ranchi: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Thursday shifted the vendors, who were carrying out their businesses in front of the Morabadi Electricity Office and Registry office, to the newly constructed vendor market in the same area. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The move aimed to provide organized, hygienic, and dignified vending spaces while ensuring decongestion of city roads, the civic body officials said. The vendor market, constructed at a cost of Rs 1.36 crore, offers space for 213 vendors and includes amenities such as shades, drinking water, toilets, and parking facilities. The allotment of vending spaces was carried out through an e-lottery system. The process was conducted peacefully and fairly in the presence of additional administrator Sanjeev Kumar on May 27. During the lottery process, 161 eligible vendors including 27 vegetable vendors, 121 food vendors, and 21 fruit/other vendors were allotted designated vending spots. The remaining vendors, who were absent during the initial process, will be accommodated in a second phase. A live demo of the randomization technique used for the e-lottery was shown to ensure transparency. After the allotment, each vendor was immediately issued an allotment letter. RMC deputed city managers and city mission managers in five shifts. The shifting process began at 6 am and continued till 5 pm on Thursday. All assigned teams were present on-site to oversee and facilitate the operation. "Those vendors who have not yet been shifted have been requested to submit their documents to the RMC which will carry out the scrutiny before conducting the next round of the lottery process. The RMC has made it clear that action will be taken against those who fail to comply with the procedure. The Corporation emphasized that its primary objective is to provide a proper platform for street vendors," Kumar said.

Morabadi vendor market remains unused months after completion
1 2 Ranchi: The much-awaited Morabadi vendor market, constructed by Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) to decongest roadside vending in the area, remains unused even months after its completion. Despite the market infrastructure being ready, vendors are still operating on footpaths, raising concerns over the project's delay. The market, built at a cost of around Rs 1.36 crore, is designed to rehabilitate over 218 vendors, mostly those selling fruits, vegetables, and street food near Morahbadi grounds. The market has been constructed with separate sections for different categories of vendors, provision for drainage, overhead sheds for weather protection, and LED lighting for night operations. The RMC has also planned to deploy guards and caretakers to maintain hygiene and order in the market. However, vendors allege that despite assurances, the shifting process has not started. "We are ready to shift if RMC gives us proper space. But they keep delaying it. We don't know when this will actually happen," said Ramesh Shah, a fruit vendor near the market. We are planning to shift the vendors to the new market within this week." According to the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) cell of RMC, vendors who were previously operating in the Morabadi area before March 5, 2022, were eligible to apply, provided they had PM SVANidhi registration and prior identification documents issued by RMC. Initially, 418 applied in April, out of which 169 were shortlisted based on eligibility in June. Since then, the wait for shifting is not over yet.

RMC's new machines idle as rain chokes city drains
Ranchi: Even as parts of Ranchi continue to reel under sanitation issues, four advanced skid steer loader machines procured by the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC), each costing Rs 44-45 lakh, have been lying unused for weeks. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Brought in from Maharashtra in June to specifically clean congested lanes, clogged drains, and narrow alleys where large machines can't operate, these compact machines remain parked idle at the RMC garage. "These are meant to revolutionise cleaning in high-density areas, but they haven't even touched the streets yet. It's a classic case of spending crores on infrastructure but failing in execution," said an RMC cleaning staff member on condition of anonymity. The city, meanwhile, continues to grapple with overflowing drains, mounds of garbage, and silt-filled lanes, especially after the onset of monsoon. "You go to Hindpiri, Upper Bazar or areas around Kantatoli and you'll still see trash rotting in corners," said Rakesh Tirkey, a daily commuter. RMC also owns other mechanised garbage handling tools such as a garbage-suction vehicle (Rs 63 lakh), two super-suckers (Rs 2.28 crore each), and four road-sweeping machines (Rs 1.19 crore each). Yet, residents complain that core city areas remain chronically neglected. Acknowledging the issue, additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Kumar said the skid steer loaders will finally be deployed from Monday. "These are specialised machines designed to access narrow streets. We brought them from Maharashtra after studying how well they worked there. The operators have now been trained, and from next week, they will be on the ground in phased deployment," he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Sanitation workers and ward supervisors have been instructed to identify key spots in each zone where these loaders can be put to best use. Whether the delayed deployment can make up for the lost time remains to be seen, but residents hope these high-end machines finally move from garages to garbage.
