Kaikoura residents drive to Blenheim to sit license tests

People in Kaikoura wanting to to sit their licences are being driven out of town, having to go hundreds of kilometres away to get pratical test. A mobile testing unit comes to Kaikoura regularly but that's only for licence renewals and theory exams, so this means a trip to Blenheim or Rangiora. Kaikoura doesn't have an approved practical test route despite locals saying they have all the elements they need, including roundabouts. Mayor Craig Mackle spoke to Lisa Owen. Photo: RNZ / Angus Dreaver Two people are before the courts after separate incidences of police recovering stolen property in rural Canterbury. Late last month police arrested a man accused of stealing the front gates of a home in Rangiora. He was remanded in custody and is due to reappear in court later this month. And on 3 June, a woman was taken into custody at a Swannanoa address after police found three vehicles that had been reported stolen. She's due to appear in court at a later date, charged with receiving property. Prosecuting parents of truant kids pointless

children education 44 minutes ago Pushing to prosecute parents of chronically truant kids is a pointless exercise according to one school principal. Associate Education Minister David Seymour is leading the government charge to get more kids back in class. He's announced the Education Ministry is proactively contacting schools and attendance officers to make sure parents of chronically absent students are referred to them for possible prosecution. Rangiora High School Principal Bruce Kearney spoke to Lisa Owen.

They have been visiting Sutton Tools - a company whose factory in Kaiapoi went up in flames after a fire which was started accidentally in January 2022. Last year, Star News reported that the construction of Sutton Tools' new $20 million factory in Rangiora was scheduled to open early in 2025. The visit comes following the government's Budget announcement of a tax incentive targeting businesses . The Investment Boost policy would allow a business to immediately deduct 20 percent of the cost of a new asset on top of depreciation. The policy came into force immediately, and applies to assets purchased in New Zealand as well as new and used assets imported from overseas. "It includes commercial buildings but excludes land, residential buildings, and assets already in use in New Zealand."
