Teen charged with trespassing and endangering safety on MRT track between Simei and Tanah Merah

A 17-year-old Singaporean male was charged on 3 July 2025 for allegedly trespassing onto operational MRT train tracks and endangering commuters' safety along the East-West Line. The alleged incident occurred on the night of 27 March, but a report was only filed on 10 June, according to police. The teenager, who cannot be named under the Children and Young Persons Act, faces two charges. One is for wilfully endangering the safety of rail users under the Rapid Transit Systems Act. The other is for criminal trespass under the Penal Code. Charge sheets state that he entered a restricted area identified as 'scaffolding point 12' along Upper Changi Road at about 8.20pm. This area is managed by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The teen allegedly climbed up scaffolding to access the active MRT track. He then walked onto the railway between Simei and Tanah Merah stations during operational hours, posing a risk to passengers on moving trains. Police arrested the teen on 1 July after identifying him as a suspect. He has since been remanded at the Institute of Mental Health for a medical examination. Authorities said the LTA has reinforced security measures at the affected location to prevent future intrusions. If found guilty of criminal trespass, he faces up to three months in jail, a fine of up to S$1,500 (US$1,178), or both. For the railway safety charge, he could be jailed for up to five years, fined up to S$10,000, or both.
