JB medical practitioner loses over RM8mil to investment scam
JOHOR BARU: A medical practitioner lost more than RM8mil of her savings after being scammed to invest in a bogus online stock investment scheme. Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the victim, a 53-year-old female, lodged a police report on Tuesday (July 29) claiming she had been scammed of her savings amounting to RM8.7mil. 'According to the victim, in April this year, she came across an investment advertisement on social media that promised high returns. She became interested and contacted the suspect to find out more about it. 'The victim was offered profits of up to 520% from the total amount of investments she made,' he said in a statement here on Wednesday (July 30). ACP Raub added that believing the profits that she would get, from May until this month, she made payments of RM8.7mil to several bank accounts as instructed by the suspect. He said from the total amount of investments she had made, the victim only received about RM6,033 in profit. 'When the victim wants to withdraw her funds and profits, the suspect forced her to pay another RM500,000 as a deposit and even threatened that her account would be frozen. 'This made the victim realise that she had been cheated before lodging a police report,' he said adding that the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. ACP Raub urged the public to be vigilant against online investment scams that promise unrealistic returns within a short period of time. 'Anybody can be a victim of scammers no matter their status or career. They should always be careful when come across investment opportunities especially on social media,' he added. He said the public should follow the Royal Malaysia Police's commercial crime investigation unit social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok for updates on the latest scam tactics.

Umno must act on principle even if unpopular, says Zahid
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi called for party members to take BN's failure to form the government in the past two general elections as a lesson and turning point to rebuild the party's strength. (Bernama pic) RAUB : Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that in today's challenging political landscape, decisions made by the party are aimed at ensuring the country's stability and future, even if those decisions are unpopular. Explaining the matter when officiating the Raub Umno division delegates' meeting, he emphasised that in any struggle, not all decisions taken will be comfortable, but they must be principled. 'No matter how high our position is in the party or government, we must realise that every post is a trust that must be carried out with full responsibility,' he said. Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman and deputy prime minister, said what Umno needs most right now is unity of purpose and a strong fighting spirit, without faltering when tested. He also reminded party members to take Umno and BN's failure to form the government in the past two general elections as a lesson and turning point to rebuild the party's strength. 'We have been tested twice in the general elections… enough of the divisions, quarrels, shooting at each other, and hidden saboteurs within. 'Let us learn from past weaknesses and fix Umno and BN from within. Hopefully, we can be dominant once again,' he said. At a press conference later, Zahid said Umno would look into whether any of its members had participated in the rally held in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. 'Umno is now part of the unity government, and we must strengthen, not undermine, the government that is in place,' he said.

Saleswoman loses RM167k in 'Bank of America' VIP scam
JOHOR BARU: A 63-year-old gold shop saleswoman was conned out of RM167,207 in a fake "VIP membership" scam allegedly linked to Bank of America, complete with promises of charity perks and private jet rides. Johor Baru South police chief, Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat, said the woman befriended a man through Facebook while working in Singapore on March 23, and later continued chatting via WhatsApp. The suspect allegedly convinced the victim to make frequent donations to a fictitious orphanage club under the name of Bank of America, with the bait of gaining VIP status and access to exclusive corporate rewards, including private jet travel. Between March 23 and July 21, while in Johor Baru, the woman made 19 transactions totalling over RM167,000 to five different bank accounts. The accounts were held under various names. "The victim began to suspect she was being duped after repeated payments failed to secure her promised VIP status and the suspect continued demanding more funds," Raub said in a statement today. Checks via the Commercial Crime Investigation System (CCIS) revealed no prior scam records tied to the bank accounts, but police are investigating under fraud-related provisions. He urged the public to be cautious when approached with dubious online offers, especially those involving personal financial transactions. Information on scams can be channelled to the National Scam Response Centre at 997 or verified via the police's Semak Mule portal at
