Orioles make history by turning a 6-0 deficit into a 14-run win against Tampa Bay
BALTIMORE — No lead is safe this year when the Baltimore Orioles face the Tampa Bay Rays. Certainly not with seven innings still to play. On June 18, Tampa Bay beat Baltimore 12-8 after the Orioles had taken an 8-0 lead in the top of the second. Then on Friday night — nine days later — it was the Rays who opened the scoring with six runs in the second. Only for Baltimore to storm back and rout Tampa Bay 22-8 .

Orioles make history by turning a 6-0 deficit into a 14-run win against Tampa Bay
BALTIMORE (AP) — No lead is safe this year when the Baltimore Orioles face the Tampa Bay Rays. Certainly not with seven innings still to play. On June 18, Tampa Bay beat Baltimore 12-8 after the Orioles had taken an 8-0 lead in the top of the second. Then on Friday night — nine days later — it was the Rays who opened the scoring with six runs in the second. Only for Baltimore to storm back and rout Tampa Bay 22-8. 'I'm proud of our hitters,' Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino said. 'We were on the other side of this not too long ago.' According to information released by the team from the Elias Sports Bureau, Baltimore became the first team in either the American or National League to win by at least 14 runs after trailing by six. On a drizzly night at Camden Yards, the Orioles produced an offensive deluge, falling one run shy of the team record since moving to Baltimore. Gunnar Henderson and Gary Sanchez each had four hits and a homer. Colton Cowser doubled three times. He and Ramón Laureano each scored four runs. With the Orioles down 6-0 in the second, Coby Mayo delivered a two-run double to start the comeback. When he came to the plate in the eighth, Baltimore led 20-8 and the Rays had infielder José Caballero pitching. Mayo took him deep for his first career homer to complete the scoring. 'An awesome moment obviously, no matter who it's off of,' Mayo said. 'Really cool thing.' The last time two teams overcame deficits of at least six runs against each other was in 2023, according to Sportradar. Those two games also involved the Rays and happened in even closer proximity. On May 7 of that year, Tampa Bay trailed 6-0 before beating the New York Yankees 8-7 in 10 innings. On May 13, the Yankees fell behind 6-0 but came back to beat the Rays 9-8. Baltimore's 14 extra-base hits (nine doubles, a triple and four homers) set a team record since 1954, when the Orioles began playing in Baltimore. This game came after Tampa Bay allowed one run total in a three-game sweep of Kansas City. And after the Orioles had been no-hit at least into the seventh inning in three of their previous five games. They had 21 hits in this one. 'It was a lot of fun,' Cowser said. 'That's what this team's capable of, and being able to go out there and have a game like that hopefully continues that motivation and confidence.' ___ AP MLB:

O's erase six-run deficit and obliterate Rays, 22-8
June 28 - Gary Sanchez hit a go-ahead home run and Colton Cowser doubled three times as the Baltimore Orioles wiped out a six-run deficit to beat the visiting Tampa Bay Rays 22-8 in Friday night's series opener. Gunnar Henderson's four hits included a home run and a triple while Sanchez had four hits and drove in four runs as the Orioles snapped Tampa Bay's three-game winning streak. Coby Mayo homered and knocked in four runs and Jackson Holliday homered for his only hit in seven at-bats. Ramon Laureano and Cowser each scored four times as Tampa Bay tied its franchise record for most runs allowed in a game. Brandon Lowe's three-run homer was the third long ball of Tampa Bay's second inning, but his four runs batted in and three hits weren't nearly enough as the Rays lost for the second time in their last seven games. Jonathan Aranda and Josh Lowe also homered for Tampa Bay while Yanny Diaz and Danny Jansen added two hits apiece. Baltimore starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano (6-4) was the winner despite giving up seven runs on nine hits in five innings. Tampa Bay starter Ryan Pepiot recorded five outs before his outing was done, allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout. Eric Orze (1-1), the Rays' third of six relievers, gave up the lead in the Orioles' three-run fifth. By that point, Tampa Bay's 6-0 lead was largely an afterthought. Aranda led off the second inning with his ninth home run of the season and, two batters later, Lowe smashed his fifth. The Rays weren't done as Chandler Simpson walked with two outs, stole second and scored on Jansen's single. Brandon Lowe put the finishing touch on the early outburst with his 17th homer of the season. The Orioles struck back in the bottom of the second on Mayo's two-run double. Then Urias, pinch hitting for injured Jordan Westburg, posted a two-out, two-run single. Baltimore closed the gap to 6-5 in the third with an unearned run. Brandon Lowe's two-out single gave the Rays a 7-5 edge in the fourth. The Orioles got back-to-back doubles from Laureano and Cowser to begin the bottom of the fifth before Sanchez's go-ahead homer off Orze. --Field Level Media

After falling behind by 6 in the 2nd inning, the Orioles storm back and rout Tampa Bay 22-8
BALTIMORE (AP) — Gary Sanchez homered and drove in four runs, Ramón Laureano scored four times and the Baltimore Orioles stormed back from from an early six-run deficit to rout the Tampa Bay Rays 22-8 on Friday night. The Orioles were on the wrong end of a similar comeback against Tampa Bay just nine days earlier, when the Rays rallied from down 8-0 to beat Baltimore 12-8. Tampa Bay opened the scoring with six runs in the second. Jonathan Aranda, Josh Lowe and Brandon Lowe homered in that inning, but Rays starter Ryan Pepiot couldn't make it through the bottom half. The Orioles scored four runs in the second and one in the third. With Tampa Bay up 7-6 in the sixth, Sanchez hit a two-run shot. Colton Cowser's third double of the game brought home another run in the sixth. Sanchez then followed with his third hit — a two-run single that made it 11-7. Laureano added a two-run single in the seventh. Jackson Holliday's solo homer in the eighth made it 16-8, at which point infielder José Caballero came in to pitch for the Rays and allowed six more runs. Gunnar Henderson hit a two-run shot — his fourth hit of the game — off him. Sanchez finished with four hits as well. The Orioles had 21 as a team. Baltimore's final runs came when Coby Mayo hit his first career home run, a two-run shot off Caballero. Tomoyuki Sugano (6-4) allowed seven runs in five innings for the Orioles. The 35-year-old rookie had gone his first 15 starts without allowing more than four. Pepiot had gone 12 straight starts permitting three runs or fewer, and the Rays were coming off a three-game sweep of Kansas City in which they allowed only one run total. Key moment Laureano and Cowser led off the bottom of the fifth with consecutive doubles to bring the Orioles within one, setting up Sanchez's big homer that bounced off the top of the wall and over in left-center field. Key stat The Orioles fell one run short of their team record since moving to Baltimore — which was set when they beat Toronto 23-1 on Sept. 28, 2000. Up next Zach Eflin (6-4) takes the mound for the Orioles against his former team Saturday. Tampa Bay counters with Zack Littell (6-7). ___ AP MLB:
