Invasive fish threaten Tasik Timah Tasoh ecosystem, Perlis warns
PADANG BESAR: The Perlis government has raised the alarm over invasive fish species in Tasik Timah Tasoh, warning that their unchecked spread could severely disrupt the lake's native ecosystem if not urgently addressed. The lake in Beseri is now under ecological pressure due to the rising numbers of aggressive non-native species such as peacock bass. State Agriculture, Plantation Industries and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Razali Saad said both the state government and the Fisheries Department believe these invasive fish are disrupting the lake's delicate natural balance. "These species compete with native fish for food and territory. Their feeding behaviour is more aggressive, often pushing out local species and disturbing their habitat," he told reporters today. Razali said the Fisheries Department has observed that these invasive fish prey on eggs, larvae and small native fish, leading to a sharp decline in native populations. "This not only disrupts the natural food chain, but can also lead to the extinction of some native species," he added. Razali said the state and the Fisheries Department are actively conducting awareness programmes to educate locals about the dangers of releasing non-native fish into the lake, a practice that could hurt both the ecosystem and the incomes of freshwater fishermen. "These invasive species also have little market value. To control their numbers, the Fisheries Department has organised catch-and-remove competitions targeting peacock bass, involving locals and students from higher education institutions. "According to department data, there are an estimated 10,000 peacock bass in the lake, and they reproduce rapidly. That's why we're working closely with the local fishing community to find practical solutions to reduce their numbers," he said. He also urged the public to seek advice from the Fisheries Department before releasing any fish into public waters such as Tasik Timah Tasoh. "Those caught releasing invasive fish species into public waters can be fined up to RM20,000," he said.

No intention to act as ‘big brother' in GRS: PGRS
Published on: Tuesday, June 24, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 24, 2025 Text Size: Razali, who is also Gagasan Rakyat's Darau Division Chief, added he would even accept it if the party is not chosen to contest in that constituency, provided the decision is made through consensus for the sake of Sabah's political stability. Kota Kinabalu: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) has no intention of acting like a 'big brother' within the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition, said its Secretary-General Datuk Mohamed Razali Mohamed Razi. Instead, he emphasised the party's commitment to an inclusive and respectful approach among component parties. Razali stressed that the strength of GRS lies in mutual respect and cooperation and not dominance. 'We don't put personal interests first. Gagasan Rakyat's culture is not to dominate, but to move together with all GRS components in unity and mutual respect. We've learned from past mistakes,' he said. Razali was speaking to the media after attending the Gagasan Rakyat Darau Division Conference officiated by GRS Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali here on Sunday. Commenting on a proposal by the party's women, youth, and young women's wings nominating him as the GRS candidate for the 17th Sabah state election, Razali welcomed the suggestion but said the will of the people must come first. Advertisement 'I appreciate the grassroots' aspirations, but ultimately, we must go down to the ground and see if the people want us. That's the real measure.' Razali, who is also Gagasan Rakyat's Darau Division Chief, added he would even accept it if the party is not chosen to contest in that constituency, provided the decision is made through consensus for the sake of Sabah's political stability. 'I will accept it with an open heart if the party president decides to field someone else. What matters most to me is that our president remains as the Chief Minister of Sabah,' he said. As GRS Executive Secretary, Razali also echoed Armizan's call for direct federal-state negotiations, free from the influence of federal party headquarters. 'We've experienced a time when every decision had to go through Kuala Lumpur, and Sabah reps had no autonomy. The time has come for us to act independently and maturely in shaping the state's direction.' Responding to criticism of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development blueprint, Razali defended it as a structured and written plan, unlike previous governments that he said relied on political rhetoric. 'SMJ isn't just coffee-shop talk. It's an official state development document. We're not magicians. Problems built up over 30 years can't be solved in just three. It takes time and stability,' he stressed. Razali also criticised Sabah's long-standing culture of political division, calling the failure to unite the root of the state's political weakness. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Speaking at the Darau Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) conference on Sunday, he emphasised that unity among component parties is essential for political stability in Sabah. Razali acknowledged grassroots support for him to contest in the upcoming state election but said the people's will must take precedence. He pledged to support any consensus candidate, regardless of party, if it ensures continued stability for the State. Razali also endorsed Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali's stance on direct federal-state negotiations and reaffirmed support for the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) plan as a structured development approach hindered by ongoing political disunity. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kijal assemblyman Razali ordered to enter defence on sedition charge
KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court here today ordered Kijal Assemblyman Datuk Razali Idris to enter his defence on a charge of making a speech of seditious nature, alleging government influence over the judiciary, at the launch of the Kemaman by-election machinery two years ago. Judge Norma Ismail made the order after finding that the prosecution had succeeded in establishing a prima facie case against Razali, 58, who is also the former Bersatu Information Chief, at the end of the prosecution's case. "After examining the evidence and submissions of both parties, the court found that the prosecution had succeeded in establishing a prima facie case. "Therefore, the accused is called to defend himself on this charge," said the judge, who then set the trial date for four days on Sept 26 and 30 and Oct 2 and 3. The proceedings were attended by deputy public prosecutors Datuk Badiuszaman Ahmad and Muhammad Amir Hannif Ahijman, and lawyer Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud, representing Razali, who is also the Terengganu Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change Committee chairman. On Nov 24, 2023, Razali pleaded not guilty to making a speech of a seditious nature between 9.30 pm and 11.30 pm on Nov 10 of the same year at the launch of the Kemaman by-election machinery at Padang Astaka Chukai, Kemaman in Terengganu.
