Maharashtra govt is ‘beggar': Minister Manikrao Kokate adds fuel to fire after ‘rummy' video row; Fadnavis reacts
Maharashtra minister Manikrao Kokate, who was 'caught playing rummy' on his phone inside the Assembly, has added fuel to the fire as he termed the government a 'beggar' while trying to clarify an earlier 'beggar' comment on farmers. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reacted to the controversy, saying it was 'inappropriate' for ministers to speak in such a manner, while asserting Maharashtra's economy was in good shape despite challenges. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate had allegedly compared farmers to beggars, inviting severe criticism. 'Even a beggar does not take Re 1 in alms, but here we are giving crop insurance for Re 1. Even then, some people try to misuse it,' he had said. When asked about the remark, Manikrao Kokate compared the Maharashtrian government to 'beggar'. He said, 'The government doesn't give Re 1 to farmers, it takes Re 1 from them. The government is a beggar,' PTI quoted him as saying. He also said that 5 lakh to 5.3 lakh bogus applications for the Re 1 crop insurance scheme had been received and he rejected them and implemented several corrective steps. The Re 1 crop insurance scheme, launched two years ago, was scrapped a few months back and replaced with the Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme. He also reacted to the alleged video of him playing rummy and warned of legal action against politicians who "defamed" him by sharing his video. 'I don't know how to play online rummy. One needs an OTP, and a bank account needs to be linked to play the game. One can check if my mobile phone is linked to any such game. I was trying to skip a game which popped up on my screen for 10 to 15 seconds,' he said. When asked about the 'beggar' statement by the Maharashtra government, Devendra Fadnavis said, 'If he has made such a comment, it is inappropriate for ministers to speak in this manner. We have taken corrective measures in the crop insurance scheme as we saw insurance companies benefitting and not farmers.' 'We have taken steps to make an investment of ₹ 5,000 crore every year in the agriculture sector. Maharashtra's economy is good despite challenges,' the chief minister told reporters in Gadchiroli. NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule in a post on X said calling the state "beggar" was insensitive and 'insult' to all the work the state government has done over the years. 'It is an insult to the hard work of all the chief ministers of the state so far and the people of the state. We will never tolerate this insult,' she said.

'Government is beggar': Maharashtra minister Manikrao Kokate sparks row with fresh remark; CM Fadnavis terms it 'inappropriate'
Maharashtra agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate, left, and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis NEW DELHI: Maharashtra agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate who was recently caught playing rummy on his mobile phone during the monsoon session of the state legislature landed into another controversy Tuesday after referring to the government as a "beggar" while trying to explain a previous statement about farmers. Earlier this year, Kokate faced backlash for allegedly comparing farmers to beggars."Even a beggar does not take Re 1 in alms, but here we are giving crop insurance for Re 1. Even then, some people try to misuse it," he had said, as reported by PTI. On Tuesday, while clarifying this statement, he told reporters, "The government doesn't give Re 1 to farmers, it takes Re 1 from them. The government is a beggar." Kokate, who represents the Sinnar constituency in Nashik district, claimed that 5 lakh to 5.3 lakh bogus applications under the now-scrapped Re 1 crop insurance scheme were rejected, and corrective steps were taken. The scheme has since been replaced with the Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme. Reacting to the minister's latest remarks, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said as quoted by PTI, "If he has made such a comment, it is inappropriate for ministers to speak in this manner. We have taken corrective measures in the crop insurance scheme as we saw insurance companies benefitting and not farmers." NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule also criticised Kokate's comments, calling them insensitive. "It is an insult to the hard work of all the chief ministers of the state so far and the people of the state. We will never tolerate this insult," she said in a post on X. Last week, NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar shared a video that appeared to show minister Kokate playing Rummy on his phone during the monsoon session of the Maharashtra legislature. The following day, Jitendra Awhad also posted two more videos, claiming Kokate was playing 'Junglee Rummy' during the proceedings. Dismissing the allegations, Kokate told PTI, "I don't know how to play online rummy. One needs an OTP, and a bank account needs to be linked to play the game. One can check if my mobile phone is linked to any such game. I was trying to skip a game which popped up on my screen for 10 to 15 seconds," He also threatened legal action against opposition leaders for allegedly defaming him by circulating the video. When asked about the mounting calls for his resignation, Kokate pushed back strongly, saying, "Tell me what has happened for which the resignation has been demanded. Have I molested someone? Have I stolen something or decided against farmers? Do I have a criminal background?" Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis also voiced disapproval over the video, prompting a response from Kokate, who said, as cited by PTI, "The CM's reaction is based on media reports. It's true I didn't brief him". Kokate maintained he has followed legislative rules for the past 25 years, but legal trouble continues to mount. A magistrate court in Nashik district recently convicted Kokate and his brother Sunil Kokate for submitting fake documents to secure flats under a government quota. They were sentenced to two years of imprisonment. Their conviction was stayed by the district court on March 5.

Tortured migrants on dais, share spotlight with kin of 1993 martyrs, Pahalgam victims
1 2 3 4 Kolkata: Though migrants and martyrs were the underlying theme of the July 21 rally, the event also featured the elderly parents of Pahalgam terror attack victim Bitan Adhikari, and the father of slain jawan Jhantu Ali Sheikh. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee escorted both families to the dais on Monday, showing the crowd the "real victims of terrorism" and vowing to support the families. For Banerjee, the day began with a meeting with the families of the martyrs at her Kalighat home. As the CM walked up to the dais at 12.54 pm, she was seen holding on to Adhikari's mother Maya (75) and and Sheikh's father Sabur Ali (78). Adhikari's father Bireshwar (80) walked next to Maya. On the dais, she welcomed them with shawls and handed them two packets containing financial aid of Rs 1 lakh each. "It was an emotional moment. The senior citizens started crying when they walked up to the dais," said minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, who was seen giving up her front-row seat to the couple. Holding their hands, Banerjee said: "Before Abhishek (Banerjee) or I speak from the dais, it is time we pay homage to the other martyrs — Bitan Adhikari and Jhantu Ali Sheikh. Their families are here with us, and we are honouring them. " The CM then wrapped shawls around Maya, Bireshwar, and Sobuj Ali. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Banerjee said her party colleagues contributed Re 1 each, and out of the accumulated money, Rs 1 lakh was paid to each of the two families. "I am handing over Rs 1 lakh to each family," she said, offering the two white packets to them. A relative of the Adhikaris later told TOI that Behala East MLA Ratna Chatterjee had reached out to them and asked them to accompany her to the July 21 dais on Monday. "It was nothing political. The elderly couple went there just for the sake of love and respect shown towards their son. Hence, they agreed. We are grateful to the chief minister for the gesture," said the relative. Sabur Ali Sheikh, who came to Esplanade from Tehatta by 9 am, said he was amazed by the CM's courtesy. "She spotted me near the base of the dais and came forward to speak to me. She asked me 'Bhai how are you?' and then took me to the dais and offered an uttariya. She gave me sweets and asked me to give them to my grandchildren. She was caring and repeatedly asked me to contact her if I needed any help. The Tehatta police escorted me home," he said. Also on the dais was Uttam Brajabashi, the 50-year-old member of the Rajbongshi community from Dinhata in Cooch Behar, who received a notice from a Foreigners' Tribunal (FT) in Assam, accusing him of entering India from Bangladesh illegally — despite his claim of being born in Cooch Behar in 1975. Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Brajabashi said he never visited Assam before being summoned. "I was born in 1975. I am 50 years old now. I don't have a birth certificate, but I've never left Cooch Behar," he said. "I had to travel to Guwahati with a lawyer to attend the tribunal hearing. A Trinamool leader assured me that the party would stand by me and support my case."

From Rs 15 Cr Missed ESOPs To 25,000 Shares Target: Advisor Buys 10 HDFC Bank Stocks Monthly
Last Updated: Financial advisor regrets leaving Rs 15 crore gains in HDFC Bank stocks for a 25% salary hike. He now buys 10 HDFC shares monthly, aiming for 25000 shares in 10-20 years. A financial advisor has shared an interesting anecdote on how he left ESOPs worth Rs 15 crore in HDFC Bank stocks by switching job for a 25 per cent salary hike. He regretted his decision to lose compounded gains that could have been made if he had stayed longer, as explained in the X post by Gurmeet Chadha, a Chief Investment Officer of a wealth management company. His post came in the context of the first bonus issue in over 30 years by India's largest private lender. At the time, Chadha chose to exit without vesting his Employee Stock Option Plan (ESOPs), tempted by the immediate increase in salary. However, by 2010, he realised the long-term wealth he had forgone. As a result, he started buying 10 HDFC Bank shares every month—a disciplined investing habit he has continued for nine years. In a striking comparison, he noted that a former colleague who stayed back and allowed the ESOPs to vest is now sitting on a fortune worth Rs 15 crore. 'Lesson learnt—Never interrupt the compounding process," Chadha wrote. Chadha said that he has been compensating his foregone by purchasing 10 HDFC Bank shares every month for the last 15 years, apart from adding lump sum during corrections. He said he has been looking to have over 25000 shares with a time horizon of 10-20 years. 'Yes I have been for more 15 years + & also add lump sum during corrections. My quantity goal is 25000 shares. I think of 10-20 times in 10-20 years & not 10-20%," he added in the X post. In a regulatory filing along with Q1FY26 results, HDFC Bank also announced a bonus issue. It said, 'Issuance of Bonus equity shares in the proportion of 1:1 i.e. 1 (One) equity share of Re. 1/- each for every 1 (One) fully paid-up equity share of Re. 1/- each held by the Members of the Bank as on the Record Date (mentioned below)." The bank also announced a special interim dividend of Rs 5 per equity for the financial year 2025-26. HDFC Bank shares have given a whopping 35,994 per cent since the listing in 1995, as per Google Finance. This also include two times stock splits in 2011 and 2019. HDFC Bank on Saturday reported a 12.24 per cent year-on-year rise in its standalone net profit to Rs 18,155.21 crore for the first quarter ended June 2025. Its net interest income, which is the difference between interest earned and interest expended, rose 5.4% to Rs 31,439 crore in April-June, against Rs 29,839 crore in the year-ago period. Its net profit had stood at Rs 16,174.75 crore in the corresponding period last year. However, on a consolidated basis, its net profit fell by 1.31 per cent to Rs 16,258 crore for the June 2025 quarter. The lender had reported a net profit of Rs 16,475 crore in the year-ago period. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
