Inter Milan strike late to progress with win over River Plate
Inter Milan scored twice in the last 18 minutes to beat River Plate 2-0 on Wednesday night and progress to the knockout stage of the Club World Cup as Group E winners and send the Argentines home. Teenager Francesco Esposito broke the deadlock in the match played in the early hours of Thursday morning in South Africa, soon after River had been reduced to 10 men by the dismissal of Lucas Martinez Quarta with Alessandro Bastoni adding the second in stoppage time. The 20-time Italian champions will face Brazilian club Fluminense in the last 16 in Charlotte on Monday with Monterrey, who beat Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0, going through in second place a point ahead of River. An intense match turned nasty after Bastoni's goal with River's Gonzalo Montiel also sent off for two yellow cards during a series of melees which continued as the players left the field under a shower of missiles from the crowd. 'We have the job done. We qualify for the further stage of this competition. We are pleased with that,' said Inter coach Cristian Chivu. 'The game was very tough for us in the first half, River had a lot of aggression, a lot of intensity. In the second half, we controlled the game a little bit better and ... after the red card it was much easier for us.' Martinez Quarta's exit for bringing down Henrikh Mkhitaryan as the last defender turned the match with the first Inter goal coming seven minutes later. Esposito took a neat touch on Petar Sucic's pass to get onto his right foot before turning and lashing the ball into the net. River were spent by the time Bastoni skipped through the tiring defence to add Inter's second with a low left-foot strike five minutes into stoppage time. The packed ranks of River fans at Lumen Field ensured a rocking atmosphere from the start and they were treated to a full-blooded clash with plenty of endeavour but no goals until the last quarter. River's best moves came through Real Madrid-bound Franco Mastantuono, but the 17-year-old midfielder only managed to get one of his handful of shots on target. Esposito also had a couple of good chances to open the scoring and his skipper Lautaro Martinez was particularly profligate, hitting the post with the best of his host of openings. River's Facundo Colidio headed the ball straight at Inter keeper Yann Sommer with a gilt-edged chance in the 64th minute but the forward was substituted in a tactical rejig a minute later after Martinez Quarta had been sent off. In the concurrent match, Monterrey booked a spot in the knockout rounds a 4-0 thumping of Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds at the Rose Bowl to claim second place in Group E and set up a last 16 meeting with Borussia Dortmund. Three goals in eight first-half minutes sent the Mexican side on their way to victory, with stunning long-range strikes from Nelson Deossa and Jesus Corona coming either side of German Berterame's cool finish. Deossa put Monterrey in front on the half-hour mark with a swerving shot from 35 yards and Berterame doubled the advantage four minutes later. Corona added the third with the pick of the goals from distance in the 38th minute before Berterame scored the fourth in second-half stoppage time. The win, coupled with Inter's 2-0 victory over River, means Monterrey finish second and will take on Dortmund in Atlanta on Tuesday.

Football: Urawa beaten by River Plate 3-1 in Club World Cup opener
KYODO NEWS - 6 hours ago - 14:44 | Sports, All Urawa Reds were beaten 3-1 by Argentina's River Plate in their Club World Cup opener on Tuesday as Japan's only representative at the tournament conceded all their goals through headers. Urawa, who made the revamped 32-team competition courtesy of their 2022-23 Asian Champions League win, were backed by raucous support in their Group E clash at Seattle's Lumen Field where their spirited display was undone by moments of casual defending. Sebastian Driussi's low effort hit the right-hand post in the ninth minute before Facundo Colidio met Marcos Acuna's pinpoint cross from the left as River took the lead three minutes later, preceded by a fine pass by Real Madrid-bound 17-year-old Franco Mastantuono. Urawa grew into the game and captain Marius Hoibraten headed home in the 32nd minute off a free-kick but was offside, while Matheus Savio fell outside the box under a challenge by River keeper Franco Armani two minutes later but referee Felix Zwayer waved play on. Their momentum was halted when River doubled the lead three minutes into the second half with Norwegian defender Hoibraten's attempted pass to keeper Shusaku Nishikawa with a back header falling short, allowing Driussi to sneak in and nod home. Urawa got a lifeline when Takuro Kaneko was shoved to the floor inside the box by Acuna for a 58th-minute penalty, which was cooly converted by Yusuke Matsuo who was a constant menace up front. River began to show signs of fatigue as Urawa pinned them back, but the Japanese team were left to rue their defending once again when Maximiliano Meza was left unmarked to bury his team's third off a 73rd-minute corner. A late volley from substitute Thiago Santana was denied by Armani as Urawa failed to cut the deficit, facing an uphill task to make the last 16 with Italian giants Inter Milan, who drew 1-1 with Mexico's Monterrey, up next. "The match was decided by tiny details," Matsuo said. "We found things really tough at the start, but the positive was that we gradually found our pace and looked to dominate...I managed to get into shooting positions in the box and it's something I can build on." From Germany: United star's reunion with Ten Hag now deemed ‘feasible' as Leverkusen prepare formal approach
From Germany: United star's reunion with Ten Hag now deemed 'feasible' as Leverkusen prepare formal approach Manchester United fans – and likely those on the board – are hoping Erik ten Hag will replicate his notorious transfer approach of signing his former players now that he's at Bayer Leverkusen. In doing so, the Red Devils have the chance of recuperating funds that can then be used to sanction their own arrivals this summer. Advertisement The prospect is certainly alive too, with the ex-Red Devils boss already being tipped for a reunion with his former protégé, Antony, in Germany. Leverkusen shortlist Antony after Ten Hag's appointment Ten Hag has worked with Antony at both Ajax and United. (Photo by) Since Ten Hag was cherry-picked to succeed the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso last month, Leverkusen have already brought in fellow SEG client Mark Flekken from Brentford, while they're reluctantly preparing for the impending departure of talisman Florian Wirtz to Liverpool. Should the deal get over the line as planned, the Bundesliga outfit will have upwards of £100 million to reinvest in Wirtz's replacement/s — and Antony is viewed as a potential candidate. Advertisement Surprisingly, so is his wantaway teammate Alejandro Garnacho. After it became public knowledge that he and United had decided to part ways this summer, Leverkusen were among a handful of clubs to have established their interest. Cut-price Antony viewed as a more 'feasible' target A fresh report from German outlet BILD this week has claimed that a move for Antony over his Argentine counterpart is deemed more 'feasible' due to their differing valuations; United were demanding a fee in excess of £60m to green-light Garnacho's exit when Napoli came knocking in the winter, while Antony, 25, could be available for around £35m. Antony's stellar efforts throughout his half-season loan spell with Real Betis certainly played into United's hands in terms of upping his price tag, although they still stand to make a substantial loss on the £86m they forked out for him in 2022. Bayern agrees deal with Leverkusen to take Tah to Club World Cup: Reports
Bayern Munich has reportedly agreed on a deal with Bayer Leverkusen to take Germany defender Jonathan Tah to the Club World Cup. Kicker magazine and other media outlets reported Saturday that Bayern, which had announced Tah's signing 'without a transfer fee' on May 29, has agreed to pay Leverkusen up to four million euros ($4.6 million) for the player to take a full part in the Club World Cup starting in the United States on June 14. Tah's contract with Leverkusen ran to the end of June, meaning he could only join Bayern on a free transfer from July 1 – unless the clubs came to an agreement beforehand. There was little goodwill between the clubs after Bayern's failed attempt to sign Tah – Leverkusen's captain – last season, when Leverkusen chief executive Fernando Carro lashed out against Bayern's Max Eberl. Bayern's public pursuit of Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz this season further inflamed tensions between the rival clubs. Any agreement to let Tah join Bayern before his Leverkusen contract ends would suggest pragmatism has won out at Leverkusen. ALSO READ: Ronaldo says Ballon d'Or 'should go to Champions League winner' Real Madrid set the precedent by paying a reported fee of up to 10 million euros ($11.4 million) to get England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold out of his Liverpool contract one month before it was due to expire so he could play at the Club World Cup, rather than waiting to sign him with a transfer fee. Bayern will also need to reach an agreement with Hoffenheim if it wants to take Tom Bischof to the tournament. Leverkusen faces a summer of rebuilding following Xabi Alonso's departure as coach, Tah and wing-back Jeremie Frimpong's departures for Bayern and Liverpool, respectively, and Wirtz's expected transfer to Liverpool. Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka suggested Friday he would be open to a switch amid reported interest from AC Milan, a change from his previous position. Leverkusen hired former Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag to replace the Real Madrid-bound Alonso, while it has also signed highly rated teenager Ibrahim Maza from second-division club Hertha Berlin and 21-year-old defender Tim Oermann from relegated Bochum before promptly loaning him to Austrian champion Sturm Graz. It also loaned promising midfielder Francis Onyeka to Bochum for next season in the second division.
