Alexander-Arnold leads Real Madrid in Jota silence before emotional tribute

Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of many stars coming to terms with the devastating loss of Diogo Jota following his tragic death but the ex-Liverpool man had some kind words for his former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold led Real Madrid in a tribute for 'true friend' Diogo Jota after his tragic death. The Portuguese forward and his brother Andre Silva died in a devastating car crash in Spain on Thursday, leaving behind his wife and three children. There has since been an outpouring of grief and emotion from across the footballing landscape, none least from Jota's former sides. But even the clubs that he did not play for have paid emotional tributes after learning the news. ‌ Spanish giants Real Madrid held a minute's silence for Jota ahead of their latest training session led by his former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold. He also posted an emotional tribute on social media. ‌ 'It's so difficult to find the right words when your head and heart are struggling to accept that someone you care so much about has gone,' the England man said. 'Diogo, your family was your world. They were everything. For Rute, his children, and his parents, all of our hearts are broken. And for Andre as well. Brothers and best friends. 'When it's less painful, I want to remember Diogo with a big smile. So many laughs and happy moments. He was such a great teammate and a true friend. Forever number 20. Rest in peace, Diogo.' Meanwhile, the La Liga side also released a touching statement. It read: 'Real Madrid C. F., its president and Board of Directors are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Liverpool FC player Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who played for F. C. Penafiel. 'Real Madrid expresses its condolences and support to their family, loved ones and teammates at their respective clubs. Real Madrid shares in the deep sorrow felt by the footballing world. May they rest in peace.' ‌ Away from Real, their record goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo also shared a message on social media having played alongside the Liverpool star on the international stage with Portugal. He wrote: 'Doesn't make any sense. 'Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you were married. To your family, to your wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. R.I.P. Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you." ‌ Real Madrid's tributes for Jota won't stop there, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirming that a minute's silence will be held before all quarter-finals games at the Club World Cup in the USA. He said: 'It is a sad day for football, we are all deeply saddened by the loss of Diogo Jota and his brother André. I had the opportunity to meet Diogo during the World Cup in Qatar a couple of years ago. He was a fantastic person and a great son, father and husband. ‌ 'It's a tragic loss and obviously in the upcoming quarter-finals of the Club World Cup we will pay tribute to him with a minute's silence. But there are no words at this moment. 'On my part, on behalf of FIFA and the entire family of world football, we send a big hug to the family of Diogo and André and offer our deepest condolences at this very sad moment.' Real Madrid will take on German side Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Vinicius, Mbappe have to defend: Real Madrid's Alonso

Last season under Carlo Ancelotti Los Blancos failed to win a major trophy and the Italian was at times exasperated with his forward line's unwillingness to work hard enough for the sake of the team as a whole. 26 Jun 2025 09:26am Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid C. (Photo by Michael Owens / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / Getty Images via AFP) "What I am certain of is that we need and want everyone to defend -- the 11 players on the pitch have to be involved defensively," Alonso told a news conference ahead of Madrid's Club World Cup clash against RB Salzburg. "They have to get close together, they have to know how we want to press, and without that, things will be very complicated. "Vini, Jude (Bellingham), Fede (Valverde), Kylian, those up front, the defence has to push forward too." Ancelotti said last season that he was not concerned if Mbappe pressed or not and wanted the striker to focus on goalscoring. The 26-year-old netted 43 goals across all competitions in his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu after his move from Paris Saint-Germain. Real Madrid face Austrian side Salzburg in Philadelphia on Thursday, looking to seal top spot in their final Group H match, but will be without Mbappe. The French superstar was not named as part of the squad to take on Salzburg as he continues his recovery from a stomach bug. Mbappe missed the team's first two matches but returned to training on Wednesday. "I was happy to see him on the (training) pitch, it was the first day he's got his boots back on and has been running, he's doing well, but not enough to play tomorrow with the level that we need," said Alonso. "He said it himself when we spoke after training, he prefers to be ready for the last 16, he's in the recovery process, he wasn't perfect for tomorrow." In Madrid's second match, a 3-1 win over Mexican side Pachuca, Brazilian forward Rodrygo was left on the bench, amid speculation he could depart the club this summer. However Alonso said the Brazilian was still a valuable member of the team. "He's doing well, he's enthusiastic, it was a technical decision (to bench him) the other day, but Rodrygo is still an important player, we will need him in this Club World Cup," said Alonso. "He's a special player and he will have a big role at this tournament." - AFP More Like This

Soccer-Real coach Alonso backs Ruediger after he suffered alleged racist abuse

Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Reuters) -Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said he believed Antonio Ruediger when the player told him he was a victim of racist abuse during their 3-1 win against Mexican side Pachuca at the Club World Cup on Sunday. Referee Ramon Abatti crossed his forearms in front of his chest, which signals the activation of the anti-racism protocol, five minutes into stoppage time after a brief scuffle erupted following an apparent foul on Germany international Ruediger. Asked if Ruediger had been the victim of racism during the game, Alonso told a press conference: "That's what Ruediger said, and we believe him. "It is important to have zero tolerance in these kinds of situations. FIFA now is investigating. That's all I can say." It was not immediately clear whether the alleged abuse came from the crowd or an opponent. Soccer's governing body FIFA was not immediately in a position to clarify the incident when contacted by Reuters. (Reporting by Julien Pretot; Editing by Toby Davis)
