Santi Cazorla celebrations Arsenal hero Santi Cazorla led the Real Oviedo party as they celebrated promotion to LaLiga with an open-top bus parade. Cazorla was integral to his boyhood club's play-off effort as he spearheaded a stunning comeback from 2-0 down on aggregate to win 3-2 after extra time. The city was awash with blue as thousands of jubilant fans lined the streets in club colours to see their heroes. Blue flares and banners were seen all over as the party carried on well after the sun had set in the city.

(EPA Images pic) MADRID : Former Arsenal playmaker Santi Cazorla has signed a one-year contract extension with newly promoted La Liga side Real Oviedo, the Spanish club announced on Saturday. Cazorla, who turns 41 in December, joined Oviedo in August 2023 and last season guided his boyhood club back to the top flight for the first time in 24 years. During his 81 appearances for Spain, he won the European Championship in 2008 and 2012. Cazorla also lifted the FA Cup twice during his time in England. 'With this renewal, Santi Cazorla, a symbol and emblem of Oviedo, proves that dreams, when pursued with the heart, come true,' the Asturian club said in a statement. 'Real Oviedo have secured the leadership of a footballer who embodies the club's values like few others, both on and off the field,' they added.

Following Oviedo's promotion, he has signed on for the minimum possible amount again. But, as he steps up a level, he will now pocket a £90k pay-rise - as the LaLiga minimum wage is £168,000-a-year, or £3,230-a-week. That means Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe will be earning THREE TIMES more in a WEEK than Cazorla gets a year, to play in the same league. And even then, the generous star will give 10 per cent of his wage and shirt sales to the club's academy.
