Bintulu-Jepak bridge renamed Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge

A fireworks display lights up the night sky above Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge. BINTULU (July 24): A dazzling fireworks display lit up the night sky above the Bintulu-Jepak bridge last night after it was officially renamed Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Costing RM466 million and stretching 1.2km across Batang Kemena, the bridge stands as a tribute to the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who served Sarawak as governor and chief minister. Abang Johari said the renaming honours Taib's vision and contributions, particularly for the establishment of the Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda) and in laying the foundation for the development of Samalaju. 'I am merely continuing the work of our past leaders. Tun Taib played a key role in setting up Recoda, developing Samalaju, and attracting investments. If he were alive today, he would be amazed by this bridge,' said the Premier. Abang Johari recalled a town hall session in 2017 following the passing of the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, where he made three key promises to the people of Bintulu. The first was to build an iconic bridge linking Bintulu and Jepak, akin to San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge; to implement a second wave of development for Bintulu; and to relocate the Resident's Office and administrative centre from Bintulu town to Jepak. 'Tonight, I've fulfilled those promises,' he declared. He also announced the construction of a new four-lane road linking the bridge to Bintulu Airport, opening the way for urban expansion, including modern residential and commercial zones, as well as affordable housing. Abang Johari revealed that Jepak will be the next area to receive piped gas infrastructure, moving households away from using gas cylinders and towards direct gas supply, a move made possible by Sarawak's own energy company Petros. Earlier yesterday, he officially launched piped gas supply to households in the Sungai Plan housing area. 'Just like Peninsular Malaysia has gas pipelines from Terengganu, we in Sarawak too have abundant gas. That's why we established Petros to develop our own modern infrastructure,' he said. He pointed out Bintulu's growing capacity in power generation, with a new 500-megawatt gas-powered plant under construction. This will add to the existing capacity of 500 megawatts and another upcoming 500-megawatt plant, bringing Bintulu's total generation capacity to 1.5 gigawatts. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas presents a memento to Abang Johari. Abang Johari also touched on the rapid industrial growth in Samalaju, where more than 10,000 workers are employed. He cited the recent launch of a polysilicon project by OCI and Tokuyama, which will require 200 engineers with priority given to Sarawakian graduates. 'When Sarawak's economy grows, so must our household income. Talented Sarawakian youths must be given the opportunity to serve in these high-paying industries,' he said, adding that education is key to ending poverty. To support this vision, he said the Sarawak government has committed to providing free university education for Sarawakian students starting 2026, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. 'When investors come, we must also improve facilities including building international schools and creating more high-income job opportunities,' he said. Looking ahead, Abang Johari said Bintulu will see further infrastructure growth under the 13th Malaysia Plan, including the development of an Autonomous Rail Transit (ART) system linking Bintulu to Samalaju, reinforcing its status as a clean, green, and modern town. 'Kuching is already recognised among the world's top 10 cleanest cities. Bintulu will follow suit as a low-carbon, environmentally friendly city,' he said. He pointed out Bintulu has been identified by the World Economic Forum as one of 36 Transition Industrial Clusters globally and the only one in Asia due to its commitment to low-carbon industrial growth. 'With our children graduating with free education, going on to pursue Master's and PhDs, we will continue developing Sarawak with our own talent,' he said. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to increasing Sarawak's revenue and redistributing it through strategic, people-focused development. Abang Johari Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge

Bottom-up approach key to Recoda's high-impact development projects, says Awg tengah

Awang Tengah (centre) flanked by Abdul Rahman (left) and Ismawi with other dignitaries during a photocall at the lab session. MIRI (June 26): A bottom-up approach driven by community feedback is essential for implementing development projects under the Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda), said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. He emphasised that proposed projects should be innovative, have long-term impact, and be well-coordinated among all government agencies and departments in Sarawak. 'Projects that involve grassroots needs should be prioritised and evaluated for project implementation which is in accordance with the strengths and uniqueness of the location. 'We want to involve the community to see what the priorities are based on the needs, based on the strengths that exist in each area covered by the agencies and we don't want to go from top to bottom, but rather involve the bottom up,' said the State Minister of International Trade and Industry and Investments. Awang Tengah, who is also Second State Minister of Resources and Urban Development, and Northern Region Development Agency chairman, was speaking when officiating at a lab session organised by Recoda through NRDA in Lawas yesterday. The lab gathered key stakeholders to refine and prioritise high-impact initiatives under Rolling Plan 1 of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for the Limbang and Lawas districts. The session focused on ensuring that proposed projects are strategic, practical, and responsive to community needs. Recoda CEO Datuk Ismawi Ismuni reminded participants to emphasise cost-effectiveness and avoid overlapping with initiatives already funded by other ministries or agencies. Also present were Deputy State Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail; Lawas MP Dato Henry Sum Agong, Batu Danau Assemblyman Dato Paulus Palu Gumbang; NRDA director Datu Ubaidillah Latip; Limbang Division Resident Unus Tambi; and political secretaries to the Sarawak Premier Awangku Jinal Abedin Pengiran Jawa and Sam Laya. Bank Negara, Recoda team up to improve financial reach in rural Sarawak

Mohd Safri (sixth right) presents a memento to Rantai, while others look on. MIRI (June 13): The Highland Development Agency (HDA) office recently hosted a courtesy visit from Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Regional Office Kuching, led by its Head Rantai Naga, in conjunction with the central bank's working visit to Miri. The visit reinforced BNM's strategic commitment to ensuring that all Malaysians – especially those in rural and remote areas – have access to financial services. This includes physical access via Financial Access Points (FAPs), bank agents (EBs), cash recycle machines (CRM), and conventional bank branches or digital platforms. According to the Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda), six 'mukims' (districts) in Sarawak still lack FAP coverage. This includes three in the Miri Division – Bario, Mulu, and Long Bedian. During the session, Recoda director (Project Management Division) Mohammad Safri Ibrahim provided a comprehensive briefing on the proposed road network in northern Sarawak. This includes Northern Coastal Highway (NCH), Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) Phase 1 & Phase 2, Miri-Marudi-Mulu-Long Lama, Sarawak Border Road (Long Banga-Bario-Bakelalan), as well as plans to improve rural connectivity between Long Lama and Long Bedian. The Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, led by SSLR project manager John Wong, presented an update on the current progress of SSLR Phases 1 and 2 during the visit. 'The improved infrastructure is expected to further facilitate financial inclusion and spur socio-economic growth in highland communities,' said Recoda. The collaboration between stakeholders underlines the importance of integrated planning that supports not only infrastructure but also financial accessibility in underserved communities, it added. Bakti Madani programme returns to Miri next month

Ismawi (second left) shares some points during the press conference. MIRI (April 26): The Bakti Madani (PBM) programme themed 'SCORE Towards People's Empowerment' is set to run this May 9-11 at the Miri City Stadium here, along with this May 10 in Sepupok, Niah. Initially slated for February, this event was postponed following the flood disaster that hit several areas in Sarawak, particularly in Miri, out of concern for the affected communities. The programme is jointly organised by the Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda) and Performance Improvement Coordination Unit (Pacu), under the Prime Minister's Office. It aims to bridge the gap between the government and people through direct service delivery, strengthen comprehensive economic opportunities, and showcase Sarawak's achievements through the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Recoda chief executive officer and the event's organising chairman Datuk Haji Ismawi bin Haji Ismuni said the programme reflects Recoda and Pacu's commitment in ensuring that it has a significant and comprehensive impact on the people. He added that Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate the opening ceremony, scheduled for May 10 starting from 10.30 am. 'The programme will feature exhibitions by the federal and state government agencies, government-linked companies (GLCs), financial institutions, and the private sector, along with a Career Fair that will connect youths and job seekers with employers for job opportunities. 'Additionally, Pocket Talk sessions will feature discussions on various important topics including health, education, cybersecurity, and current issues closely related to public interest. 'At the pavilion, there will be booths by the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), Recoda, and other agencies, which will provide information on the Sarawak and Madani government's numerous programmes and initiatives that have been carried out for the benefit of the people,' he said. Moreover, there will be a Rahmah Sale by two major supermarkets in Miri offering daily necessities at affordable prices to the local community, as well as a Recoda Entrepreneur Carnival where entrepreneurs can market their businesses and products, he added. Other activities lined-up are the People's Concert to be held on May 10 outside the Miri Indoor Stadium, featuring performances from artistes like Baby Shima, Ricky Andrewson, and Alleycats; 'Battle of the Bands'; zumba sessions; children's colouring competition; and various family-friendly attractions. 'Visitors could also stand a chance to win attractive lucky draw prizes, including the grand prize of a Proton Saga 1.3 Premium, three SM Sport 110E (N2) motorcycles, and electronic goods such as iPads and Smart TVs. 'Meanwhile, the Satellite Programme will be held on May 10 at the Sepupok Open Stadium, Niah featuring a 'gotong-royong' (work party) and free health screening,' said Ismawi. He added that these initiatives demonstrate the government's continued commitment to realising the Madani Economic Agenda and supporting Sarawak's aspirations to become a developed and high-income state through PCDS 2030. 'We are delighted to finally welcome the public in Miri and surrounding areas to this long-awaited programme, and we look forward to encouraging participation from the local community.' Also present at the press conference were Recoda director Dr Hadysyam Junaidi, Highland Development Agency director Juan Ubit, and TV Sarawak (TVS) acting chief executive officer Sardon Zainal.
