Why was San Francisco City Hall lit red last week?

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — People walking by San Francisco City Hall last Tuesday might be wondering why they were seeing red. BART says $35M deficit eliminated, long term funding remains a mystery Well, ponder no more. The Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region revealed in a social media post on Monday that it was behind the eye-catching display on March 18 — all to honor its dedicated month. Red Cross wrote on X, formerly Twitter, 'Did you catch San Francisco's City Hall lit up in red last week? On March 18, they donned their Red Cross red in honor of Red Cross Month.' The non-profit humanitarian organization that provides disaster relief said it will continue to share thanks through the remainder of Red Cross Month to volunteers, donors and local partners 'who make their mission possible.' San Franciso City Hall last took on another festive look when it illuminated its lights in green to honor St. Patrick's Day. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. It's Red Cross Month; how locales recognize local chapter

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – March is Red Cross Month, first proclaimed by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1943, and followed by every president after. The Southwest Virginia chapter of the Red Cross is grateful for the cities and counties in the valley that have proclaimed this month as Red Cross Month. These proclamations from Roanoke city, county, and Salem, all acknowledge the importance of the organization and raise awareness for its mission. The executive director of Southwest Virginia's local chapter says the best way to support the Red Cross is to understand what it does: which is to provide relief and support for those who have experienced disasters and promote preparedness and safety skills. National Wear Red Day; sign up to participate in Lynchburg Heart Walk 'We see some things on the news, but we're there 24/7, not just during the disasters. We're there for four service members. We're there for Red Cross training,' said Jackie Grant, the executive director of the Southwest Virginia chapter of the Red Cross, 'There's so many components of the American Red Cross that help the community, that it's just nice to have some recognition in that month of March. But also about recognizing the volunteers because those are the folks that are really doing the work on the ground.' The Red Cross's workforce is 90% volunteers, and it's always looking for more. You can sign up to volunteer, give blood, take a CPR class, or donate here. As we get closer to those summer months, Grant says giving blood now is crucial, especially since the Red Cross supplies forty percent of the blood in the country. A special promotion the Red Cross is giving this month, is anyone who donates blood will get a free A1C test to measure your average blood sugar. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Deshun Avery: Honoring West Texas community heroes during Red Cross Month

This March, we are proud to honor fellow West Texans during our annual Red Cross Month celebration, which started more than 80 years ago with a proclamation signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Last year, in the Panhandle Plains Chapter, which encompasses 44 counties, including our own Hockley County, Red Crossers assisted 194 families after a disaster, helped more than 512 area military community members and provided first aid, CPR and AED training to more than 4,390 people. During the month of March, the Red Cross is offering free A1C testing (commonly used to screen for prediabetes and diabetes) on blood, platelet and plasma donations. Visit for full details. Do you know a family who has suffered a home fire or a service member or their family that could use our help? Go to or call us at 806-765-8534 to learn more. Red Cross honors volunteers, gears up for Amplify Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The American Red Cross, known for their worldwide work during disasters and support in local communities, celebrates their thousands of volunteers in the month of March every year. In combination with Red Cross Month, our local chapter, serving Bastrop, Burnet, Caldwell, Fayette, Hays, Lee, Milam, Travis, and Williamson counties, is hoping to raise funds during Amplify Austin. This area-wide fundraiser for local non-profits kicks off March 5 at 6 p.m. and continues until March 6th. Below is a transcript of Meteorologist Kristen Currie's discussion with Marty Mckellips, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross serving Central and South Texas Region. Read below: Kristen Currie, KXAN: As we head into March, it's a big month for the American Red Cross. Joining me today to talk more about that, is Marty Mckellips with the American Red Cross here in Central Texas. Marty, Red Cross Month. Tell me more about it. Marty Mckellips, American Red Cross: Yeah, it's really exciting. Every year, the President of the United States declares March as 'Red Cross Month' to honor all the service our volunteers provide across the country. We try to have a lot of celebrations during that time, because our volunteers are really amazing, and it lines up nicely with Amplify Austin, which is coming up in the first week of March. Currie: So tell me first what Amplify Austin is and how it benefits you guys with Red Cross? Mckellips: So Amplify Austin is an amazing thing that happens. This year, it runs from March 5th through the 6th. They have a website where everyone can go in and donate to their favorite nonprofits and local non-profits. They've raised about $112 million since 2013 for all the wonderful nonprofits that work across the Central Texas area. Currie: How does the American Red Cross, specifically here in Central Texas, use that money? Mckellips: Everybody sort of knows about the big disasters, the fires and floods and all that, but here in Central Texas, we respond to every home fire. So if your home burns down in the middle of the night and it's freezing cold and you're on the street with no shoes, all you have to do is call 1-800-Red Cross and amazing volunteers will show up and make sure you have clothes and food and a place to stay and mental health support and replace prescriptions. Sort of get you on that first step toward your recovery. Currie: With Amplify Austin, we're looking for those dollars to stay here locally. Again, remind us when those dates are and if there are any opportunities to get involved and volunteer with y'all. Mckellips: It begins March 5 at 6 p.m. and ends March 6 at 6 p.m. And yes, we're always looking for volunteers. At this time of year, we're preparing for hurricanes on the Gulf Coast, so our plan is to recruit as many people as we can and get them trained, so when that season starts, they're ready to go. All you have to do is go to put in your zip code and find out where you can get trained. You can be as little involved or as most involved as you want to be as a volunteer. Currie: Marty, thank you so much for joining us today, talking about the American Red Cross and Amplify Austin. For more information on the American Red Cross serving Central Texas, click here.
