I tried the M&S Strawberry and Creme sandwich - here's what I thought

Described by M&S as 'game-changing' the £2.80 limited edition Red Diamond Strawberry & Creme Sandwich is filled with the fruit and light whipped cream cheese on fluffy sweetened bread. M&S said its latest creation was inspired by Japanese 'sweet sandos', or fruit sandwiches. M&S said: 'Inspired by the Japanese sweet sandos, recently spotted popping up in London's trendiest Japanese patisseries, our product developers have long dreamed of creating a dessert sandwich. (Image: staff) 'With our exclusive Red Diamond Strawberries at their juiciest best, the time has finally come to create the ultimate strawberries and creme experience. 'From alfresco lunches, afternoon tea at home, summer picnics, courtside snack breaks or a sweet afternoon pick me up, the Red Diamond Strawberries & Creme Sandwich is your go-to summer indulgence, wherever, whenever. And with Wimbledon coming to a close it seemed quite apt. To be honest I am not really a dessert person and was surprised to see it alongside the usual sandwich offerings of egg mayo, ham and cheese, duck in hoisin sauce etc But I decided to give it a go and got my travelling companion Louise to agree to share it with me. It is just one sandwich so I divided it in half and took a bite! It was super rich and I have to say the first bite was enjoyable, a bit like a small slice of a Victoria sponge, it was sweet and tasty. But I am so glad there was only the one sandwich, two would have been too much. The strawberries were juicy and I have to admit that I now make a be-line for M&S diamond strawberries as they seem to be the most 'strawberry' tasting strawberries I have come across so far this season in the supermarkets. But there were not enough, the sandwich was not overly packed with them which would have helped break down the sweetness in my opinion. The bread was brioche-style bun was light and to be honest the type of bread I like a burger in. The cream was the sticking point for me. It said 'sweetened full fat soft cheese and creme fraiche' but as Louise pointed out it tasted a bit synthetic and ultimately the second bite it started to taste a bit sickly and there was no way I would have been able to eat the whole sandwich myself. I think it if had been actual cream cheese it might have brought a much needed burst of acidity that I think it needs. I'm glad to have tried it and would recommend giving it a go yourself. But would I buy it again? No. And the other thing worth pointing out is its availability. So far I have not come across it in our local M&S stores. I found this one at the service station in Bicester on the way back from a business trip. The hype has obviously worked as I understand millions of these have been flying off the shelves. If you can find one, see what you think.

Is the Buttery Sandwich a truly fine piece or a rancid rowie?

North east purists look away now, the humble buttery has been given a sugary sweet makeover. The famous delicacies, also known as a rowie or an Aberdeen roll, are known for their flaky, salty layers. Similar to a croissant, the savoury treat's distinct layers are created with smears of butter and lard folded into a yeasted dough with the knobbly, crispy cratered top shaped with the baker's fingers or knuckles. Thought to have been created for fishermen, butteries would last for days on end at sea thanks to their high fat content in comparison with traditional bread rolls, or softies. STV News Rowies are thought to have been created for fishermen spending long days at sea. A popular breakfast item, purists tend to opt for an extra helping of butter on top. Amber Hurst from The Bread Guy showed STV News just how the newest item on the menu is made. STV News The treat is made with two iced butteries sandwiched with whipped cream and jam She explained: 'I wanted to create something which was going to be controversial. If you look at it you might think 'oh that's too much'. When pressed on the calorie content, she joked: 'Honestly, it could be worse!' It comes as British bakers launch products inspired by Japanese 'sweet sandos', or fruit sandwiches. Last month, Marks & Spencer revealed a dessert sandwich filled with strawberries and cream. M&S The new M&S Red Diamond Strawberries & Creme Sandwich. We spoke to people on the streets of Aberdeen to find out exactly what they think of the new treat. One tourist said: 'Not only tasty, but the texture. Very delicious. Aber-delightful! Aber-give me more!' A local quipped: 'It's as good as [a traditional rowie]' But not everyone is impressed. 'I just think a rowie is a rowie,' said one woman. 'Just butter. It's not upsetting me, it's not for me.' Another said: 'It's all the stuff inside it that doesn't appeal.' STV News The Buttery Sandwich has been a hit with locals in Aberdeen Amber says the treats have been popular in The Bread Guy's bakeries in the city, but if you're interested in giving it a go, you need to be in the shop early.
