Victoria blasted for ‘demonising' gas in their renewables-only crusade
Shadow Energy Minister Dan Tehan says the Victorian government has 'demonised' gas in their renewables-only approach. This comes as Red Energy, the country's fourth largest energy retailer, will slap its customers with fresh electricity price hikes in a major blow to thousands of Victorian families. 'Now in Victoria, what we are seeing to try and overcome these delays, is they are taking property rights away from farmers,' Mr Tehan told Sky News Australia. 'It's because they haven't got the plan right, and in particularly, because they have focused on renewables only.'

Power bills set to surge as Red Energy reveals fresh price hike for thousands of Victorian families
Red Energy, the country's fourth largest energy retailer will slap its customers with fresh electricity price hikes in a major blow to thousands of Victorian families. In late May the Australian Energy Market Operator announced that 500,000 customers nationwide could experience an eye watering 9.7 per cent rise in their power bills. The increase in electricity prices, which officially kicked in on July 1 are affecting millions of households nationwide, with average bills rising between $110 and $300 per year depending on the provider and state. The AER's latest quarterly data revealed that more than 215,000 Australians are currently in energy debt - a number that rose by 7 per cent from the previous quarter. However, Red Energy, the retail body of the government owned Snowy Hydro company revealed it would be raising its prices in Victoria by just over four per cent. This is believed to lump an addition $50 on the yearly power bills of an estimated 230,000 Victorian families. The move will further reduce the substance of the federal government's energy rebates, which have already been halved from $300 to $150. However, Red Energy's Victorian price hike is not as bad as New South Wales, with the retailer raising annual prices by a whopping 15 per cent in the country's most populated state. The rise follows price increases announced by the country's largest electricity providers including AGL, Origin and Energy Australia. AGL lifted its annual prices in Victoria by 6.8 per cent. A spokesperson for Red Energy told the Herald Sun the choice to raise prices was a 'difficult decision' and that it was aware 'many households are facing cost of living pressure.' 'We've done our best to keep prices as low as possible,' the country's fourth largest electricity and gas retailers insisted. 'These increases reflect rising costs such as wholesale and network costs, which make up over 70 per cent of the average bill,' a spokeswomen told the Herald Sun. The spokeswomen insisted their packages would still remain competitive. When asked by the Herald Sun if the government owned energy providers move to lift prices was appropriate, Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen provided a quotation from a recent speech. Mr Bowen skirted around the around the price hike and said the government would 'deliver a better regulated pricing mechanism which will put downward pressure on electricity bills and also ensure the energy market better utilises the huge uptake of rooftop solar and increasingly batteries.' Mr Bowen, who has come under increasing fire for pursuing a hasty renewable energy rollout is currently visiting the Pacific to 'reinforce the government's commitment to practical climate action and progress discussions on our bid to host COP31 in 2026.' Red Energy has experienced a substantial bump in revenue in recent years, with energy sales rising by 21 per cent in 2023-24 in addition to its yearly income doubling to $900 million. Head of retail at Snowy Hydro Iain Graham was paid a salary of $1.96 million in 2023-24, up $350,000 from the previous year.
