Manitoba to see one more day of extreme heat: Environment Canada

Colleen Bready has your current conditions and updated weather forecast for July 3, 2025. The extreme heat and humidity are expected to last one more day in parts of the Red River Valley, including Winnipeg, the Interlake and Whiteshell. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued heat warnings for several Manitoba communities, saying these areas will experience temperatures in the low 30s and humidex values near 40 on Friday afternoon. Thunderstorms are also possible in these communities throughout the day. Relief from the heat is expected Saturday as a cold front enters the province. Amid these extreme temperatures, ECCC warns Manitobans to take steps to protect themselves, including drinking lots of water, closing blinds, turning on air conditioning, scheduling outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day, and limiting direct exposure to the sun. The weather agency added to watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst and intense fatigue. Those showing signs of heat stroke, which include hot skin, dizziness, nausea and confusion, should call 911 or an emergency health-care provider. The full warning can be found online.

CALM's Strategic Cage-Free Expansion Sets It for Solid Market Gains

Cal-Maine Foods CALM is moving ahead with its $60 million expansion plan, aimed at expanding capacity for 1.1 million cage-free layer hens and 250,000 pullets by end of 2025. This is part of CALM's multi-year strategy to capitalize on shifting consumer preference for cage-free eggs. With ten U.S. states enforcing cage-free egg production by 2030, around 73% of U.S non-organic laying hens will need to be transitioned to cage-free systems to meet demand. To address this evolving market, Cal-Maine has been strategically scaling its cage-free operations through a combination of organic investments and acquisitions. The company has been upgrading existing facilities and converting conventional housing to cage-free environments. Cal-Maine's inorganic growth efforts are equally significant. In 2022, it acquired the remaining 50% interest in Red River Valley Egg Farm, adding around 1.7 mm cage free layers. The acquisition of Fassio Egg Farms, Inc in September 2023 increased capacity by 1.2 million laying hens, primarily cage-free. The acquisition of ISE America, Inc. in late 2024 added an additional 1 million cage-free laying hens. Backed by its efforts, cage-free eggs now account for a larger share of CALM's product mix and represented approximately 29.5% of its total net shell egg sales in fiscal year 2024. While cage-free egg production is more expensive than for conventional eggs, it supports premium pricing, offering a long-term growth driver for Cal-Maine. Post Holdings Steps Up Cage-Free Investment Post Holdings, Inc. POST is also incurring additional operating and capital costs to procure cage-free eggs, modify existing layer hen facilities and construct new cage-free layer hen housing and comply with other farm animal initiatives. Post Holdings' investment plan for 2025 includes the completion of the Norwalk, IA, precooked egg facility expansion and continued cage-free egg facility expansion, for aggregate expenditures of $80-$90 million. Vital Farms' Pasteur-Raised Offerings Have an Edge The specialty egg (including pasture raised and free-range) market has witnessed a CAGR of 21.4% between 2020 and 2024 to reach $8.3 billion in retail sales in 2024. Vital Farms, Inc. VITL, the leading U.S. pasture-raised egg brand, is riding strong consumer demand, with customers willing to pay more for ethically sourced, transparent and sustainable food. Vital Farms continues to accelerate supply expansion. During the first quarter of 2025, Vital Farms added new family farms to its network, which now exceeds 450 family farmers. Vital Farms' internal capacity expansion plans also remain on track, with the construction of an additional egg washing and packing line at its Egg Central Station facility in Missouri slated for completion during the fourth quarter of 2025, as originally scheduled. CALM's Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates Cal-Maine gained 68.1% in a year against the industry 's 9.2% decline. Colleen Bready's forecast: A smoky Thursday ahead, but rain could be on the way

Colleen Bready has your current conditions and updated weather forecast for June 5, 2025. Prepare for a smoky day and night ahead with poor air quality in Winnipeg expected on Thursday. The city and most of southern Manitoba are under an air quality warning issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada. The weather agency has also issued a special air quality statement for Brandon and neighbouring regions in the southwest closer to the international border. ECCC said air quality will be particularly poor within a couple of hundred kilometres of any fire, especially downstream. However, smoke should move out of western regions Thursday afternoon. However, smoke will continue to hang over Winnipeg and the Red River Valley Thursday before moving out Friday morning. It will take a few more hours for smoke to clear in eastern regions early Friday afternoon. Winds are light in the northwest Thursday, but there isn't any much-needed precipitation in sight today or Friday. At this point, there is a good chance of showers in Flin Flon Saturday. The chance of showers grows Saturday night before turning to rain Sunday. Conditions will remain dry in the south Friday, before showers arrive Saturday in Winnipeg and areas where wildfires are burning in the southeast, including Nopiming Provincial Park. In the southwest, showers are possible Saturday in Brandon, but not as likely as in Dauphin. Showers are expected in both regions Sunday.

Rain brings relief to some parts of Manitoba but only brushes Lac du Bonnet blaze

Social Sharing Much-needed rain fell in several parts of parched southern Manitoba on Thursday and overnight into Friday, but it only grazed the Lac du Bonnet area, where a wildfire has raged since Monday and claimed the lives of two people. The storm system brought several small thunderstorms that had widely varying rainfall amounts, said Danielle Desjardins, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. "Unfortunately, the areas closer to the wildfires didn't get as much precipitation as we saw further south and west, especially the Red River Valley and points west," she said. About 11.5 millimetres fell in Great Falls, just north of the fire in the rural municipality of Lac du Bonnet, which only received 0.1 mm. Libau, west of the RM, got 47 mm. The Colorado low that brought the rain isn't quite done with Manitoba yet, so there is still a chance it could help in the firefighting efforts, Desjardins said. There should be some more shower activity later Friday as the low swings to the east, she said, noting about 10-15 mm is still expected with the system, but amounts could be quite variable. "I'm hoping that they get a lot of precipitation. It's a very unfortunate and heartbreaking situation," she said. "Unfortunately, Mother Nature's going to do what it's going to do but … the one good thing is that temperatures behind the system are going to be quite a lot cooler than we have seen in recent days. So those hot, dry and windy conditions that are primed for the ignition and spread of wildfire will be subsided." Despite the ongoing battle, some evacuees have been allowed to return to their properties in the RM. According to the RM of Lac du Bonnet website, the evacuation was lifted as of 8 p.m. Thursday for permanent residents in Wendigo road subdivisions and residences stretching from Highway 313 to Newcombe Road. No seasonal access or visitors are permitted there yet, and all other evacuated areas remain closed. Updates are being posted to the Lac du Bonnet Emergency Management Facebook page. Even with the rain and cooler temperatures, "the fire remains active in several areas within the identified red zone, which means that our evacuation must remain in place," states a message posted just after 9 a.m. Friday on the Facebook page. "We appreciate the impact that these decisions have on our residents but we must continue to make decisions that provide the highest level of safety." At last report, that fire is just over 4,000 hectares, and it's still touch-and-go. "I was there this morning [on Wendigo Road] … where the fire started. There's still hot spots and smoldering points on that fire," RM of Lac du Bonnet Reeve Loren Schinkel said Friday. Rain 'a blessing' in Piney The rain did make an impact on one out-of-control fire in the province. The Piney wildfire "was getting extremely close to the community [of Woodridge]. Then all of a sudden we could feel the temperature drop … so we knew the rain was coming," said Ken Prociw, a councillor for the RM of Piney, near the U.S.-Manitoba border. "The skies just opened up. It was a blessing. It just changed everything." That fire, which was just across the street from the Woodridge fire hall, was suddenly held. Prior to that, crews were scrambling to create fire breaks but the flames kept jumping them, he said. "It was changing constantly. It was unbelievable how it was swarming." According to Friday's update from the RM, the Woodridge area got 15 mm of rain, but the fire is still listed as out of control and the state of emergency remains in place. The fire was last estimated to be 7,880 hectares in size and had already forced evacuations in the communities of St. Labre, Florze and parts of Carrick and Woodridge. Prociw said it has destroyed one home in St. Labre and possibly two cottages in Florze. Evacuation orders will not be lifted until the status of the fire has been changed to "being held," the RM's update states. Another update will be done Friday evening, and the RM will post the information on its social media sites for the public. The Manitoba government has held briefings the last two days, but hasn't yet said if it intends to hold a news conference Friday to provide an update on the wildfire situation.
