Faridabad firm calls CA student ‘oversmart' for asking about work hours and stipend; social media demands company name

A student has claimed that a Chartered Accountancy (CA) firm insulted them just for asking about work hours and stipend before applying for an articleship. The student felt that such questions saved time for both sides. But, the firm replied rudely, calling them 'oversmart'. The comment angered many online. People called the firm's behaviour unprofessional and said such firms often misused students after registration. Articleship in CA is a mandatory programme that students in India must complete. They do so under the guidance of practising chartered accountants. The Reddit user wrote, 'I contacted a firm and asked for timing and expected stipend, then said no need for oversmart. Why so? If my timing can't be adjusted, why would I be wasting time on going to interviews at these firms?' 'Instead, I can go on to those firms with whom my timing will be adjustable. I was trying to save time of firms too. But these kind of behaviour leave dent on the firm's image. These kind of principals exploit articles after getting registered. Stay safe, everyone,' the user added. The student even shared a screenshot of a WhatsApp chat, which apparently proves the claim. Later, the student shared that he had joined a firm with 2.4 LPA. One Reddit user asked the poster to 'name and shame' the company. Many others also insisted. 'I'm an ex CA. I've completed CA but am working in a different field now. Tell me, I'll take care. I know how it feels to do articles in a toxic firm and know what to do with them,' wrote one user. While the poster did not categorically reveal the name, they claimed it was 'some mid size firm in Faridabad'. One user argued that, while asking for the timing was fine, the stipend needed to be discussed only at the end of the interview. 'And, it will be your wish whether to join or not after interview,' the user wrote. Another user had a strong disagreement about it. 'If they expect to know everything (educational qualification, skills, etc.) and make shortlisting with the help of a CV beforehand. What's bothering them to disclose the stipend upfront so that potential articles can also make their shortlisting based on their requirement or alignment, which will ultimately save time & effort of both parties? If not, it's HYPOCRISY only,' the user argued.

Dumb and Dumber fans only now noticing clever detail three decades after release

Fans of '90s hit comedy Dumb and Dumber are only now realising a clever detail from the movie, which is widely regarded among the funniest films of all time. Dumb and Dumber opened at number one at the box office and earned a whopping $247 million against a relatively small budget of €17 million. It is a standout film in the careers of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, who played the protagonists of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne respectively. While it's been 31 years since Dumb and Dumber first hit our screens, a clever detail in the movie has only recently surfaced on Reddit, leaving fans of the film in stitches as they remember their first experiences watching it, The Mirror reports. On Reddit's 'Movie Details' thread, one user highlighted a subtle joke that went over the heads of many viewers over the past three decades. A deleted scene from the movie had revealed the joke but it came as a surprise to most when it was pointed out. The Redditor pointed out: "In 'Dumb and Dumber,' Lloyd Christmas was in love with Mary Swanson. Had they gotten married and she'd taken his last name, she'd be named Mary Christmas. It's never mentioned in the movie." YardBarker further explained that this was not simply a coincidence, as evidenced by a deleted scene where Harry pieces together the connection, but ultimately, the filmmakers chose not to draw attention to the joke. When the deleted scene was shared on the Reddit thread, it received some criticism from users who failed to find it amusing. One commenter wrote: "Wow...I've seen a few deleted scenes and am glad they were deleted". Another user echoed this sentiment, stating: "I've seen an uncut version on TV a long time ago, and was like what the f*** is this? Over the top crude humour. It totally killed the innocent stupidity of the characters". One user joked, "So basically the sequel?" while another Reddit user poked fun, saying they act "like that doesn't exist". A fellow user chimed in, "Wise man. I still refuse to see it as well. In some alternate reality, there was a sequel that was true to the original and hilarious. That's what I tell myself anyway." The Farrelly brothers-led movie is considered one of the funniest of all time but it only holds a modest 67 per cent Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. Dumb and Dumber spawned an animated TV series, a 2003 prequel, and a 2014 sequel but it is the original that truly holds up among the greatest comedies of all time, with many reminiscing fondly of their first time watching. Many social media users have shared fond memories of the film, saying they were "obsessed" with it as a kid and had watched it so many times it was "burned into their brain," finding it "hilarious".

Apartments in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad are expensive? Try a houseboat or move to a village, suggest Redditors

With property prices in India's major metro cities continuing to rise, the dream of homeownership is slipping further out of reach for many middle-class buyers. This growing affordability crisis has prompted Redditors to suggest unconventional housing solutions, such as houseboats or relocating to villages or Tier 2 cities. As metro home prices soar, Redditors suggest houseboats or village living as alternatives for middle-class buyers priced out of the market. (Representational Image)(Unsplash ) In a recent post on Reddit, a user unable to afford a flat in Bengaluru, Chennai, or Hyderabad, and constrained by age and income limitations for a home loan, asked whether he should buy or rent a small boat and convert it into a livable space with basic amenities like a kitchen, bathroom, and two rooms. "I am unable to afford flats in any of the Indian cities - Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad. I am already aged out, so I won't be in a workable age for EMIs. Is it legal for me to hire or buy a small boat? Can I park these boats on the lakes or seashore and live there?" the Redditor wrote. "This is a serious question. Houseboat costs from ₹ 15-30 lakhs. Moreover, if floods come, I will still be floating," he said. Buy a small boat? Can I park these boats on the lakes or seashore and live there?" the Redditor wrote. While the idea of living on a boat sparked curiosity, most Redditors offered more practical alternatives. Some suggested exploring property in villages or peri-urban areas, where land and homes are still relatively affordable. This shift in sentiment reflects broader market trends. In Bengaluru, for example, mid-segment housing launches (homes priced between ₹ 40 lakh and ₹ 80 lakh) saw a significant drop last year, according to data from NoBroker. In contrast, the luxury segment, homes priced above ₹ 1.5 crore, has witnessed notable growth, further widening the affordability gap. One user suggested considering buying property in India's villages or peri-urban areas. 'In villages near Patan, Gujarat, you can get a plot with an 800–900 sq ft house for ₹ 10–12 lakh,' the Redditor wrote. 'Sure, you'll give up online deliveries and premium healthcare, but at least you'll own a house.' Others suggested moving to the outskirts of Tier-1 or Tier-2 cities. 'With ₹ 20–30 lakh, you could get a decent 1BHK or even a small 2BHK in the outskirts of Pune or Hyderabad,' wrote another. 'You won't have a lake view like a boat, but it's far more practical.' Also Read: Bengaluru real estate: Will slowing NRI interest and rising property costs lead to a market correction? Bengaluru saw a major dip in mid-end housing launches in 2024 Last year in Bengaluru, the number of new residential launches in the mid-segment, homes priced between ₹ 40 lakh and ₹ 80 lakh, witnessed a major decline, according to data shared by NoBroker. In 2023, the city recorded 15,179 new units in this price bracket, making up 29% of all launches. However, in 2024, that figure dipped to 14,876 units, accounting for just 22% of total project launches. NoBroker said this trend highlights a growing concern over affordability in Bengaluru's housing market, as budget-conscious buyers struggle with limited supply in the mid-income category. At the same time, the luxury housing segment, defined as properties priced above ₹ 1.5 crore, has seen a significant boost. The number of units launched in this category surged to 23,073 in 2024, up from 15,071 the previous year. As a result, luxury homes now make up 34% of total new launches in the city, up from 29% in 2023.
