Chepauk Super Gillies' owner moves Madras High Court against TNOGA notice on online gaming ‘endorsement'

A media company that owns Chepauk Super Gillies, a leading participant in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) organised by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), has approached the Madras High Court against a notice issued by the Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority (TNOGA), warning it of penal action over an alleged indirect endorsement of an online gambling website. Justice N. Anand Venkatesh on Friday (June 28, 2025) took note of the submission of senior counsel P.R. Raman, representing Metronation Chennai Television Private Limited, that the TNOGA's notice insisting that Chepauk Super Gillies remove the endorsement had been issued on June 26, 2025, when the TNPL 2025, which began on June 5 and is expected to end on July 6, was at an advanced stage. The judge directed TNOGA counsel B. Arvind Srevatsa to take notice on behalf of the authority and instruct it to keep all further action in abeyance till July 16. In an affidavit filed in support of its writ petition, Metronation, which also owns Thanthi TV, said the TNOGA had issued issued a show-cause notice on May 16, taking exception to an endorsement on the Chepauk Super Gillies' jersey. In the notice, the TNOGA stated that the signage MELBAT found on the jersey amounts to indirectly promoting the betting/gambling website MELBET, and that this was in violation of Section 8 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Act, 2022. The authority had asked Metronation to respond as to why it should not be proceeded against for such a violation. Metronation denies charge Metronation responded to the notice on June 21, stoutly denying the charge of having promoted online gambling through its jersey branding. It told the authority that the logo displayed on the jersey was that of 'MELBAT LIVE,' a website engaged in sports news. The company asserted that the logo did not contain any language, imagery, or context that could be construed as promoting betting or gambling. After considering the reply, the TNOGA sent a second notice to the company on June 26, observing that the explanation was unsustainable since Section 8 of the Act prohibits not only direct but also indirect advertisement of online gambling. Therefore, the authority gave a final opportunity to Metronation to remove the endorsement within 48 hours or face action under Section 16 of the Act. Since Section 16 provides for the imposition of imprisonment for a term extending up to one year or fine, which could extend up to ₹5 lakh or both, for contravention of Section 8 of the Act, the media company had rushed to the court with a plea to quash the June 26 notice. It contended that the TNOGA had issued the notice without considering the Advertising Standards Council of India guidelines.

Cops in Nashik file case over illegal banner

Nashik: The Mumbai Naka police registered a case against a man for putting up an illegal banner along the street in the Govind Nagar area of the city. A case was registered against him under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations (Regulation and Control of Sky Signs and Advertisements) Rules, 2022, and The Maharashtra Prevention of Defacement of Property Act. The 10 feet board in Marathi, read a message that "We will continue to put up our shops here even if the common people die. We have strong support of the Municipal Corporation and the police administration." It was immediately removed as it was put on the land of the NMC. The board suggested the continuous encroachment on the streets by people who put up their stalls along the streets, encroaching on public places. Owing to the encroachments, there is less space on the road, which consequently leads to road accidents.

Spanish court suspends multi-million euro Ryanair fine for ‘abusive practices'

Airline CEO Michael O'Learly slammed Spanish authorities for 'interfering in low-cost travel.' A Spanish court has suspended a multi-million euro fine previously imposed on Ryanair for their alleged 'abusive practices.' The High Court of Madrid agreed to temporarily suspend the fines imposed by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs on Ryanair, and Norwegian Air, Spanish publication 20 Minutos has reported. The airlines were fined for practices such as charging travellers for hand luggage, reserving seats, and printing boarding passes at the airport. Photo: Getty News in 90 Seconds - June 27th Ryanair appealed the €107 million fine, which was imposed by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs in November 2024. Judges at the High Court of Justice suspended the fines on the provision that Ryanair provide a bank guarantee of €110 million, with Norwegian Air asked to guarantee €1.8 million. In the ruling, judges said that the measure was to ensure the 'appropriate security' was provided by the airlines. Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary welcomed the ruling, and slammed Spanish authorities for 'interfering with low-cost travel.' 'The Spanish courts have correctly upheld EU law, which protects the freedom of all EU airlines to set our own prices, a fundamental right guaranteed by Regulation (EC) 1008/2008,' he said, Majorca Daily Bulletin reports. 'The Court has also upheld the right of all Spanish passengers to choose how much cabin baggage they wish to carry and pay for, in addition to Ryanair's 'free bag', which exceeds the dimensions set by the EU "With over €10 billion invested in Spain, Ryanair contributes over €24 billion to the country's GDP and supports over 10,000 direct jobs for pilots, cabin crew and engineers. 'Given the current political climate in Spain, Minister Bustinduy has far more pressing matters to attend to than interfering with low-cost air travel, a vital industry for the Spanish economy,' he continued. 'We now urge Minister Bustinduy to respect EU law and the needs of Spanish passengers and withdraw his illegal baggage fines." Last year, the Spanish Ministry of Consumer Affairs imposed sanctions on five low-cost Airlines, including Vueling, EasyJet and Volotea. The companies were fined €39 million, €29 million, and €1.1 million, respectively. Each company has filed an appeal; however, they are still awaiting resolution. Sources from the High Court of Justice told 20minutos that the sanctions were suspended as they were the first two cases to reach the court from the National Court.

Tanaiste to announce plans to accelerate purchase of new defence materials

Tánaiste Simon Harris will announce plans to accelerate Ireland's acquisition of defence capabilities such as force protection, artillery, cyber and air defence systems today. The Irish Mirror understands that Mr Harris, who is also the Defence Minister, is expected to formally sign up to an EU instrument called Security Action for Europe (SAFE). This was agreed on May 29, 2025 and will provide financial assistance to Member States to support their urgent 'public investments' in defence industrial production, aiming to increase production capacity, improve the availability of defence products and address capability gaps. Sources said that this will allow Ireland to invest in defence in a more prompt fashion. This will enable the Defence Forces to acquire specific equipment up to two years quicker than under the current procurement rules. The capability areas that SAFE will cover include ammunition, artillery systems, ground combat capabilities, soldier equipment and critical infrastructure protection, including cyber protection, military mobility, air defence systems, maritime surface and underwater capabilities and drones and anti-drone systems. Mr Harris is expected to say that he has been 'steadfast' in his commitment to investing in the Defence Forces and moving towards Level of Ambition 2 by 2028, before then moving on to Level of Ambition 3, as outlined in the Commission on the Defence Forces. The Tánaiste is further expected to outline his determination to 'provide for the development of a full spectrum of Defence Force Capabilities that will bring Ireland in line with other similar-sized European countries'. He will add: 'I have agreed, therefore, that the Department of Defence should leverage the common procurement opportunities offered under the SAFE (Security Action for Europe) Regulation as much as possible to progress delivery of Ireland's defence capabilities needs as quickly as possible.' BSE Shares Down Over 1% As Sebi Slaps Rs 25 Lakh Penalty For Flouting Regulatory Norms

Last Updated: Shares of BSE declined over 1 per cent on Thursday morning after markets regulator Sebi slapped a Rs 25 lakh penalty on the stock exchange. BSE Share Price Shares of BSE declined over 1 per cent on Thursday morning after markets regulator Sebi slapped a Rs 25 lakh penalty on the stock exchange for failing to provide equal access to corporate disclosures to all stakeholders and take action against brokers with frequent modifications during trades. After a flat beginning to the trade, the stock later dropped by 1.47 per cent to Rs 2,748 on the NSE. The market regulator passed the order after an inspection conducted between February 2021 and September 2022. In a 45-page order on Wednesday, Sebi found that BSE's system architecture allowed its paid clients and internal listing compliance monitoring (LCM) team to access corporate announcements before the same were made public through its website, resulting in a breach of norms. The regulator also observed that the data dissemination process lacked safeguards to ensure simultaneous and equal access to all stakeholders, which is critical to maintaining market integrity and preventing unfair information advantage. Accordingly, Sebi concluded that BSE failed to comply with Regulation 39(3) of the Securities Contracts (Regulation) SECC (Stock Exchange and Clearing Corporations) Regulations, 2018, which mandates stock exchanges to ensure fair and transparent access to all users. It also noted that BSE did not establish a really simple syndication feed, which could have mitigated the risk of unequal access to corporate disclosures. Although the exchange later created a time gap to address the issue, Sebi held that such corrective action was taken only after the inspection highlighted lapses. Sebi also flagged serious shortcomings in BSE's monitoring of client code modifications, which are permitted only in case of genuine errors. BSE failed to initiate disciplinary action against brokers with frequent modifications and did not adequately monitor 'error accounts', raising concerns over the possibility of misuse and lack of due diligence in trades between unrelated institutional clients.
