Haaland and City can put frustrating 2024-25 season behind them There is no denying that Haaland's haul of 22 goals in last season's Premier League fell short of the Norwegian's sky-high standards. Even accounting for injuries, he was averaging just 0.72 goals per 90 minutes, compared with 0.95 the term before and 1.17 in his breakthrough 2022-23 campaign. But just because he has not lived up to the Haaland of old, that does not mean he cannot put up impressive numbers in 2025-26. For a start, City should be more competitive next season, having finished third in the 2024-25 Premier League with nine defeats and just 72 goals scored – an eye-catching 24 fewer than the campaign before. And while Haaland shoulders the bulk of the goalscoring responsibilities, the creative players around him were simply not firing on all cylinders – and the absence of defensive midfield anchor Rodri disrupted the balance of the team. But going into next season, the Spaniard is back, City showed signs of promise at the recent Club World Cup, and a potential new system with new players could bring out the best from Haaland. New signings should help Norwegian's cause City acted quickly in the transfer market this summer, snapping up Wolves wing-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, AC Milan midfield talent Tijjani Reijnders and, crucially, creative outlet Rayan Cherki before the start of the Club World Cup. The France international, who headed the Ligue 1 assists table with 11 last term, should go some way to plugging the gap left by Kevin De Bruyne, while Ait-Nouri could be key in a City team looking to play with more width. In last season's Premier League, the Light Blues averaged just 17.3 crosses per 90 minutes, but in the recent Club World Cup that went up to 22.3 crosses. Although the global competition provides a small sample size, City's increased tendency to get the ball into the box has been clear to see. An aspect of Haaland's game that has been seemingly lacking since he arrived in England is his aerial threat. But City's potential emphasis on width in the 2025-26 season could change that and help a player who loves to linger inside the box. His average shot distance in the league last season was 12.3 yards – almost the same as that from penalty spot to goal-line. Expect Haaland's tally to top 30 It can be tough to find value in markets such as player total goals, but a good punting strategy could be to split stakes between two brackets – the 30 or more goals and 35 or more goals categories. By doing so, punters would secure a small profit if Haaland scored 30 or more but fell short of 35, but would have the potential to generate decent winnings from both if he hits 35 goals in the Premier League. That is a real possibility. He did so in his debut 2022-23 campaign, notching 36 goals in 35 appearances. In the previous two seasons he has fallen short of the 30 mark, scoring 27 and then 22 goals in the Premier League, but he missed 14 top-flight across those campaigns, whereas he missed just three in his first term. And he was still finding the target with ease last campaign, having led the way in the Premier League in terms of shots on target with 55 and non-penalty expected goals with 18.8 – more than Liverpool hitman Mo Salah (18.2). If Haaland stays fit and City get more penalties than their underwhelming four in last season's Premier League, he could well thrive again. He will start the campaign aged only 25 in a City team eager to make amends for the disappointment of 2024-25 and boosted by the signings of more creative players.

Man City to announce first transfer of summer window as £46m signing reveals Club World Cup plan

Manchester City are poised to announce their first signing of the summer transfer window after comments from Tijjani Reijnders. The Dutch international's medical was reported to have taken place on Sunday after Man City reached an agreement with AC Milan to sign the midfielder for £46m. Advertisement Reijnders has, now, effectively confirmed the transfer is all but complete by discussing the aforementioned medical and the plan for this summer's revamped Club World Cup tournament. Speaking to Gazzetta, he said: "The medical? I couldn't wait to do it. The plan is to take part at the Club World Cup with City. I'm really excited about that. 'Doing that means I'll get to know my new team-mates sooner." All that remains is for Man City to officially announce the transfer, which they must do before June 10 if Reijnders is to be registered in the Club World Cup squad. The 26-year-old was a standout performer in an otherwise disappointing 2024/25 season for Milan. He scored 15 goals in 54 appearances across all competitions, weighing in with five assists but couldn't help the Italian giants qualify for Europe. Advertisement That said, Reijnders is not expected to be the only new arrival at the Etihad Stadium this week. City are close to completing a move for Wolves full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri after the Algerian completed his medical on Saturday, whilst they can accelerate a deal for Rayan Cherki now that his involvement with France at the Nations League finals is now over. According to latest reports, Man City and Lyon have resumed talks over Cherki after a first bid was rejected last week.

Man City vs Al-Hilal prediction: Free betting tips and Club World Cup preview

MANCHESTER CITY are eyeing a Club World Cup quarter final spot and are warm favourites to progress beyond Al-Hilal later. SunSport have enlisted the help of their betting experts to preview the game in the early hours of the morning and select the best bets, tips and exclusive sign-up bonuses from our leading betting partners. Man City vs Al-Hilal preview Man City have moved to joint favourites for Club World Cup glory after the group stages. That's likely duo to their 11 goals scored in the last two games, including five put beyond Italian giants Juventus last time. It was the second game on the spin where City had five different goal scorers too, highlighting their firepower at the top end. And in Rodri and Reijnders, there aren't many better midfield pairings in world football. They're a short price to win later and set up a last-8 clash with either Inter or Fluminense. Al-Hilal earned a fantastic 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in their opening game before a goalless draw with Salzburg. That left them needing a win on matchday three against Pachuca to get through and that 2-0 victory saw them finish runners-up behind Madrid. Man City vs Al-Hilal latest odds Odds are correct at the time of publication and are subject to change. Man City vs Al-Hilal predictions Big player Jeremy Doku has scored in all of his last three starts for club and country and is two from two in this Club World Cup. The winger was a bit hit-and-miss last season and has some real competition now in the attacking areas and has been a big player out in America. Needs to keep it going to win over some supporters but should be a presence here. Tijjani Reijnders ‘can be very important' for Man City

Reijnders joined City from AC Milan last week in a deal worth an initial £46.5million as part of Pep Guardiola's rebuild in response to their disappointing 2024-25 season. The 26-year-old made an impressive debut, playing the full game, as City began their challenge at the Club World Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia on Wednesday. Central defender Ake said: 'I know him really well and I think he can be very important. 'I think from the first week in training, you could see that he fits in really well and you can see the quality he has. 'He can play in different positions, he can get into the box, he can keep the ball going and moving forward. He has great quality and there's so much more to come. 'He did really well. It was tough circumstances but he kept the ball really well, kept us moving and offensively he was very good.' Ake played 90 minutes himself for the first time since January as City saw off their Moroccan opponents in their Group G opener with first-half goals from Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku. His past season was a frustrating one as he made just 18 appearances in all competitions due to fitness problems. Kicking off our #FIFACWC campaign with three points 🙌🩵 Highlights ⤵️ — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 18, 2025 The 30-year-old said: 'It was very tough. I basically always tried to push, tried to come back as quick as possible but then I got injured again and mentally it can be tough. 'It's never easy but luckily that's done now and hopefully now I can stay fit and keep performing. 'I feel good. I had my first 60 (minutes) with the national team and this was my first 90 in a little while. 'Obviously (I hope there is) more to come but this game was important in the group and it's a good start for me.'
