Marcos Defends DILG Chief Remulla's Style Amid Criticism Over Casual ‘Walang Pasok' Posts

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. backed Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla's informal approach to public announcements, saying his relaxed tone is simply a matter of communication style. Speaking to reporters in Washington, D.C. on July 23 after his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, Marcos said what matters most is that Remulla delivers the message clearly, especially when it comes to announcements like class suspensions. The comments came after backlash erupted online over a July 22 Facebook post by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), announcing class cancellations in a humorous tone. The post began with 'Mga Abangers, sarap ng bogchi ko…' and appeared to be from Remulla himself. While some netizens, including celebrities Jake Ejercito and Jessy Mendiola, slammed the casual language as inappropriate for urgent updates, Marcos downplayed the criticism, saying everyone has their own way of communicating and Remulla gets the message across. The DILG has yet to officially address the public reaction. Remulla earlier confirmed that his office is authorized to announce class suspensions on behalf of the Cabinet and the Palace, as noted by the Presidential Communications Office.

Marcos defends Remulla's 'announcements'

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. defended DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla following criticisms related to his department's style of announcing class and work suspensions. When asked about this, Marcos told reporters covering his trip in Washington, DC, that he is "not a judge of literary style." 'As long as he gets the message across, that's what it's for. That's what all of these postings are for and get some information across," Marcos said. ''People criticize me for the way I speak, criticize him for the way he speaks. But that's the way he speaks,' he added. The President also explained that the task of announcing class suspension was given to Remulla to avoid the spread of fake information. "Which website do you consult? So, pagka ganito, basta't sinabi na, the SILG will make the announcement… Wala ng fake news. Iyon na 'yung katotohanan. Iyon na 'yung totoo,' explained Marcos. 'So that the dissemination of information is better. That is very simple." Apology Remulla has already apologized for the "humorous posts" of his department for the announcement of class and work suspensions with some netizens saying that they were insensitive. Remulla told GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita in an interview that he was not downplaying the struggle of the public and that he was just trying to lighten their mood. In a post on DILG's Facebook account on Tuesday, Remulla said, "Mga abangers, may inaabangan ba kayo? Mamaya na kain muna ko." (Guys, are you waiting for something? Later, I have to eat first.) Then, the DILG again published a post with Remulla saying, 'Mga abangers, sarap ng bogchi ko. Sa kabusugan ay nakaidlip nang sandali. Oh eto na inaabangan niyo!' (Guys, I had a delicious meal. I fell asleep for a while after being full. Oh, this is what you've been waiting for!) Dante, Emong Twelve people were reported dead due to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Crising and the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Wednesday. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), meanwhile, said that over 1.4 million people in the country have been affected by Tropical Cyclone Crising, the Southwest Monsoon, and a low pressure area (LPA). DILG's Remulla says sorry for humorous class, work suspension announcements

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Wednesday apologized for the humorous posts of his department for the announcement of class and work suspensions due to the bad weather. Remulla told GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita in an interview that he was not downplaying the struggle of the public and that he was just trying to lighten their mood. 'Siguro hindi nila ako naiintindihan. Pabiro talaga ako. Hindi ko naman minamaliit ang pinaghihirapan nila. Ang ginagawa ko lang, ang pagpapaalala ay ginawa kong mas magaan para hindi negative vibes lagi ang naririnig,' Remula said. (Maybe they just don't understand me. I am really humorous. I am not downplaying what they are going through. All I am doing is reminding them. I made it lighter so that they don't always hear negative vibes.) 'Kung 'di naman nila naiintindihan ay humihingi ako ng pasensiya. Pero ganoon talaga pagkatao ko. Ano na lang, intindihin na lang ito na wala naman akong masamang intensiyon,' he added. (If they don't understand, I apologize. But that is just how I am. Just understand that I don't have any bad intentions.) In a post on DILG's Facebook account on Tuesday, Remulla said, "Mga abangers, may inaabangan ba kayo? Mamaya na kain muna ko." (Guys, are you waiting for something? Later, I have to eat first.) Then, the DILG again published a post with Remulla saying, 'Mga abangers, sarap ng bogchi ko. Sa kabusugan ay nakaidlip nang sandali. Oh eto na inaabangan niyo!' (Guys, I had a delicious meal. I fell asleep for a while after being full. Oh, this is what you've been waiting for!) Remulla was referring to the announcement of class and work suspensions due to the impact of the bad weather caused by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat). The post received mostly angry reactions. Twelve people were reported dead due to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Crising and the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Wednesday. Five of the fatalities were recorded in Calabarzon. Negros Island Region had three fatalities. One fatality each meanwhile was reported in Metro Manila, Mimaropa, Northern Mindanao, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARRM). The victims died due to drowning and falling trees. Nine people were also reported missing and seven others were reported injured. The information from the PNP is up for validation by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). —KG, GMA Integrated News

Jake Ejercito and Jessy Mendiola call out DILG over casual class suspension announcement

Jake Ejercito and Jessy Mendiola criticized the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) for its casual approach to announcing class suspensions during recent heavy rains and flooding caused by the southwest monsoon. The controversy stemmed from a Facebook post by the DILG on July 22, which used informal and humorous language to announce the suspensions. The post read, 'Mga Abangers, sarap ng bogchi ko. Sa kabusugan ay naka idlip nang sandali. Oh eto na inaabangan ninyo,' paired with a graphic that appeared to show the message came from DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla. Though the style mirrors Remulla's typical social media tone, netizens and public figures found it inappropriate. Some commenters felt it trivialized a serious matter, calling the department 'out of touch' with the urgency of the situation. Jake Ejercito commented directly on the post, pointing out that humor had no place in this context. Jessy Mendiola also criticized the tone, questioning whether the post was meant to be taken lightly. As of now, the DILG has not responded to the backlash. Secretary Remulla previously confirmed that his office had been authorized to issue class suspension announcements, with Presidential Communications Office Secretary Dave Gomez noting that Remulla makes such announcements on behalf of the Cabinet and the Palace.

DILG to mayors: Impose forced evacuation if necessary amid Habagat

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Tuesday urged concerned mayors to implement forced evacuation when necessary to ensure the safety of their residents from the impact of the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat. In a statement, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla also asked local government units (LGUs) to prioritize vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. The LGUs have to coordinate with their respective Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for relief distribution from the national government, he added. Remulla reminded concerned mayors to always observe Operation L!STO Protocols to guide them on critical measures and actions to take in response to the impact of the bad weather. The Interior and Local Government Secretary also called on all affected residents to heed the advice of local authorities and promptly relocate to designated evacuation centers or safe areas. Citing a weather advisory from PAGASA, the DILG said the Habagat will bring moderate to intense rains of up to 200 mm within the next few days in several areas in Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, and the Negros Island Region. The DILG warned of possible flooding areas that are urbanized, low-lying, and near rivers. Landslides may also happen in moderate to highly susceptible areas, it added. Six people were reported dead due to Tropical Cyclone Crising, Habagat, and the low pressure area (LPA), the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Tuesday. A total of 1,266,322 individuals or 362,465 families were affected by the bad weather in all regions in the country except for Eastern Visayas. Floods, landslides, collapsed structures, and tornadoes were reported in the affected areas. — Joviland Rita/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
