Yap urges urgent action on long-delayed Stampin Resettlement Scheme flood mitigation project
Yap together with community leaders meeting officer from the DID and the consultant. KUCHING (July 1): Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has called for urgent action on the long-delayed RM350 million flood mitigation project at Stampin Resettlement Scheme. He said the project, first announced by the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on Nov 16, 2022, was further brought into motion with a kick-off meeting chaired by Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Datu Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel on July 13, 2023. 'However, despite clear state-level commitment and funding allocation by the Sarawak GPS Government, the physical implementation of the project has yet to commence, much to the disappointment of the affected community,' he said in a statement. Seeking to address the matter, Yap, accompanied by Penghulu Jakup Buan, Tuai Rumah Michael Mada, and representatives from the various village security and development committees, convened a crucial site meeting today with officers from the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) and their appointed consultant at the Stampin Resettlement Scheme. 'The engagement was held to scrutinise the progress of the RM350 million Flood Mitigation Project — a long-overdue initiative that has become a major source of anxiety and frustration for local residents,' he explained. During the dialogue, Yap expressed deep concern over the slow pace of progress and conveyed the mounting frustration of residents who have endured repeated flash floods for years. 'This is not just about infrastructure; it is about the safety, health, and dignity of the people — especially the elderly and children — who are at constant risk during the rainy season,' he said. He appealed to the DID and the consultant to treat this matter with the utmost seriousness and expedite all remaining technical and planning processes so that work can proceed without further delay. Yap stressed that effective flood mitigation is not a luxury but a vital obligation to the people. 'As their elected representative, I stand firmly with the residents of Stampin Resettlement Scheme. I urge all relevant authorities to redouble their efforts and uphold the trust placed in them by the community. 'It is my sincere hope that, through closer cooperation and commitment, this long-awaited project can finally be implemented in a timely manner,' he said. Yap said the meeting ended with a clear consensus among local leaders and himself, calling for the prompt commencement of physical works so that residents may finally live in safety and dignity. flood mitigation project lead stampin resettlement scheme Wilfred Yap

Awang Tengah, who is also the Second Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development, said that since 2018, infrastructure development for the scheme has been implemented with new specifications involving the construction of, among others, paved roads, concrete drains and water and electricity supply reticulation systems, involving an average cost of RM150,000 per lot. 'However, taking the people's welfare into consideration, the government has set the land premium payment at no more than RM2,500, which can be paid in annual instalments for up to 10 years,' he said.

Temiar student creates history, scores 8As in SPM
GUA MUSANG: A Temiar student from the Orang Asli community has created history as the first from her community in Kelantan to achieve 8As in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. Nur Syafienaz Nazri, 18, a student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Panggung Jaya, demonstrated that location and background are not barriers to academic excellence. Growing up in Kampung Merlong in the Resettlement Scheme (RPS) in Kuala Betis, she is one of eight Orang Asli students in the state who passed all subjects, but the only one to score 8As. "I want to show my community that we can succeed. This is the first step toward achieving my dream of becoming an educator," she told reporters at SMK Panggung Jaya today. She credited her success to discipline, focus, and continuous support from teachers, friends, and especially her mother, a seamstress who has been the backbone of her education as the eldest child in the family. "I want to change my family's fate. My mother has sacrificed a lot. I've held onto that determination since Form One," she said. Nur Syafienaz said that although her home is only about 25 minutes away from school, she chose to stay in the hostel to ensure she wouldn't miss extra classes and learning activities. She hopes to pursue further studies at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) by enrolling in the English Language Foundation Programme as the first step toward a career in education. Meanwhile, her mother, Siti Norsyakila Kamarzaman, 36, said her daughter's success serves as a huge motivation for her younger siblings and other Orang Asli students living in rural areas. "I hope this is not the end, but the beginning for more Orang Asli children to dare to dream and work hard to achieve it," she said. –BERNAMA
