Shane Lowry gets controversial penalty to derail British Open hopes

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — Irishman Shane Lowry, who won the British Open the last time it was played at Portrush, was assessed a two-shot penalty for accidentally moving his ball with a practice swing before his second shot on the par-5 12th hole. When Lowry finished his round, he was 2-under par for the tournament, but met with rules officials afterward before signing his card and it was determined that his ball moved as he took a practice swing. So, the par he'd carded on No. 12 became a double-bogey and instead of being 2-under entering the weekend, Lowry is even par, 10 shots behind leader Scottie Scheffler. Advertisement According to a source, Lowry pled his case to the tournament officials, but for naught. 'I didn't know anything happened until walking up the 15th fairway and then the rules official came over and told me that there was a possibility the ball moved on the 12th for my second shot,'' Lowry said afterward. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect 'I feel like I played well on the way in and then obviously waited to see. I told them I definitely was looking down towards the ball as I was taking that practice swing, and I didn't see it move. I had to take the penalty because I can't have my name talked about or tossed around like that, and I just get on with it. It's obviously very disappointing. I'll just have to dust myself off and get out there tomorrow and give it a go.''

Brian Harman's British Open mission is clear with second-round performance

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — Brian Harman doesn't care if you don't think he's a top player in the world. He doesn't care whether you consider him a worthy British Open champion, which he was two years ago at Royal Liverpool. Harman wants more and, though 36 holes of the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush, he's put himself in position to hoist the Claret Jug for a second time thanks to a second-round 65 on Thursday. 3 Brian Harman plays the 13th hole during the second round of The 153rd Open Championship golf tournament. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect That put him in the lead at 8-under par as some of the players with later tee times, such as Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm, were teeing off. When Harman finished, he was leading Haotong Li by one shot with Li still on his front nine, Rasmus Hojgaard, Robert McIntyre and Tyrrell Hatton (al finished at 5-under) by three and Tony Finau (4-under) by four. Rory McIlroy and Keegan Bradley are five back at 3-under par having finished their second rounds. 'I feel really comfortable over here,'' Harman said. 'I'm comfortable driving it. They're very different golf courses (Hoylake and Portrush), but the golf is similar. You've got to be able to flight your golf ball. You've got to know how far everything's going. Then you can't get frustrated. You're going to get bad breaks, you're going to end up in funny spots where it doesn't seem fair, and you just have to kind of outlast that stuff. 3 Brian Harman of the U.S. hits his tee shot on the 14th hole during the second round. REUTERS 'Although the golf courses are different, the style of golf is very similar.'' Ironically, Harman didn't immediately fall in love with links at first. 'I won the (John) Deere in '14 and was the last guy in the field at Liverpool that year,'' he recalled. 'I wasn't super excited about coming over. I just didn't really fancy my chances. After I played that week, I was like, 'Wow, I can't believe how much I enjoyed that.' I love being able to hit these stingers off of the tee that go a million yards. I don't know, I just really kind of took to it. 'Then I played terrible the next six Opens and then started playing better over here.'' 3 Brian Harman reacts after making his birdie putt on the 18th green on day two of the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush. AFP via Getty Images Harman posted a clean card, without a single bogey, while making six birdies, including one on the 18th. He said he'll 'approach the weekend the same way'' as he did two years ago, when he was in the top 10 entering the third round. 'I'm not trying to be heroic or do anything crazy,'' he said. 'I know that I've got the game to do it, and it's just a matter of executing and staying in my own head. I would love to have a similar weekend (to 2023) and just play great the whole way through. 'There's going to be challenges. This is a hard golf course. The pins have been in really, really tough spots, and you've really got to think your way around it. Inevitably you're going to mis-hit some shots and end up in spots you don't want to be in, and the way you handle that will determine the outcome of the tournament for sure.

Pete Crow-Armstrong lives it up at All-Star Game with girlfriend: ‘Glad I've got someone good looking'

Pete Crow-Armstrong was having the time of his life walking down the MLB All-Star Game red carpet on Tuesday night in Atlanta. The 23-year-old was all smiles as he walked hand in hand with girlfriend, Hailey Lavelle, as fans chanted 'Pete, Pete, Pete' while he stopped to sign autographs. Crow-Armstrong is in the midst of a memorable season with the Cubs and started in center field for the National League All-Star team. The two have been dating for roughly a year and a half and Crow-Armstrong told GQ in an interview that the pair met at the wedding of 'High School Musical' star Vanessa Hudgens and former baseball player Cole Tucker in December 2023. Crow-Armstrong, the son of actors Ashley Crow and Matthew John Armstrong, embraced the All-Star moment he was having on Tuesday night, even bringing out a custom bat that featured 'Clark the Cub' on it. However, during his first turn up, Crow Armstrong did not use the blue colored bat with the Cubs mascot on it, but he did double against Yankees lefty Carlos Rodón. He also shared a fun moment with Javier Báez, whom he was traded for in 2021 in a deal between the Mets and Cubs. Caitlin Clark joins Sabrina Ionescu in WNBA 3-point contest field

The WNBA 3-point contest added some extra star power this year. Fever guard Caitlin Clark will be part of the 2025 event, the league announced Tuesday. Clark, competing for the first time, is joined by other talented trey ball shooters Sabrina Ionescu (Liberty), Sonia Citron (Mystics), Kelsey Plum (Sparks) and 2024 3-point champion Allisha Gray (Dream). While Clark is known for making a lot of 3-pointers, though she comes into Friday's competition as an underdog given the circumstances of this year. This season, Clark — who has battled through injuries and limited to 12 games this season — is shooting 28.9 percent from beyond the arc, which is the lowest percentage among the competitors. Still, there is no denying that Clark has the range to compete in the 3-point contest. In her historic collegiate career, she set the Division I record for most 3-pointers made (548) on a 37.7 percent success rate. She'll face steep competition from Gray, who leads the WNBA in 3-point field goal percentage (38.9 percent) among qualified players. Plum and Ionescu rank seventh and eighth, respectively. Ionescu won the contest in 2023 and set a league record with 37 points in the clinching round. 2025 MLB All-Star Game props, odds: Target the Over/Under as AL battles NL

An embarrassment of riches will be scattered throughout the diamond with stars Tuesday night for this year's Midseason Classic. The All-Star Game kicks off with two of the best pitchers in the major leagues this season, as Cy Young candidates Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal will clash. Surely every player in the dugout will be standing up and leaning against the railing instead of sitting back on the bench. Watching these two pitchers go to work is appointment viewing, and the entire league should be on alert to see these two studs work. The total for this game is understandably low, coming in at seven runs across most of the betting market. It's worth remembering that Skenes and Skubal will potentially pitch for just one inning, and the rest of this game features some loaded offenses. Baseball player holding a bat during All-Star Game workouts.s red hot going into the All-Star Break. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Still, just one All-Star Game since 2018 has totaled more than seven runs. Is this game going to be a pitcher's paradise going forward? The last offensive showcase we had was in 2018 when the AL defeated the NL, 8-6. Scoring is about on par with years past (4.38 runs per game in 2025 vs. 4.39 in 2024), and no data shows baseballs are any different or that Torpedo bats have any positive offensive correlation. Still, some of the pitchers behind the elite two are missing from action, notably Jacob DeGrom, who will not pitch in the game, along with Max Fried and Garrett Crochet. That potentially leaves us with Clayton Kershaw, who was picked as a friendly gesture more than for merit, to pitch behind Skenes, along with MacKenzie Gore and others. Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting None of these pitchers are bad per se, but there is certainly a drop off. All of these things lead me to a total of over seven runs bet. I suspect that this is a year for an offensive explosion in the All-Star Game.
