Nandan Nilekani appointed Chief Mentor for India Energy Stack Task Force
As reported by ET earlier, the Ministry of Power confirmed on Saturday the appointment of Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani as the Chief Mentor of a newly formed Task Force to develop the India Energy Stack . The move aims to form a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) designed to standardise and modernise operations across the sector. ET had earlier reported the news on June 18. The initiative has been approved under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), with REC Ltd. as the Programme Nodal Agency and FSR Global as Knowledge Partner, said an official memo. In a major push to digitise India's power sector, India Energy Stack aims to create a unified digital architecture that will enable interoperability and data-driven innovation across generation, transmission, distribution, and consumer services. "A correction of up to 25% in generation, transmission and distribution costs is the desired outcome of this exercise," an official aware of the project had told ET earlier this month. Nilekani, who previously spearheaded the Aadhaar project as Chairperson of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), will guide the Task Force in charting a roadmap for the Energy Stack and preparing the scope for a Utility Intelligence Platform to enhance efficiency and transparency. Alongside tech entrepreneur, the Task Force includes several distinguished experts and senior officials: Dr Ram Sewak Sharma, Chairperson, former CEO of the National Health Authority and ex-Chairman of TRAI. Pradeep Kumar Pujari, Vice Chair, Distinguished Fellow at FSR Global and former Chairman, CERC. Pramod Verma, Chief Architect of FIDE and former Chief Architect of Aadhaar. Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson, Central Electricity Authority. Alok Kumar, Director General, AIDA. Jitendra Srivastava, CMD, REC. SK Soonee, Founder and former CMD of Grid India. According to the government notificiation, representatives from major DISCOMs, including CMDs of MSEDCL and GUVNL, will also participate in shaping the initiative.

Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini approves projects and procurements worth Rs 718 crore in high-powered committees' meeting.
With box attached in CCI Chandigarh: In a major push for infrastructure and public service improvements, Haryana's High Powered Purchase Committee (HPPC) and High Powered Works Purchase Committee (HPWPC) on Friday approved projects and procurements worth ₹718 crore during a meeting that chief minister Nayab Singh Saini chaired. In a marathon session of more than 6 hours, they cleared key development works, with a focus on Gurugram and Faridabad, power infrastructure, and public health. Officials claimed to have achieved a total saving of ₹26 crore through negotiations with bidders. Power sector investments Power utilities Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (HVPNL) and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) received ₹132 crore for the manufacture and supply of transmission line towers, substation structures, and underground cables for financial year 2024-25. Additionally, ₹53.86 crore was approved under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) for strengthening power distribution and reducing AT&C losses in Ambala's Naraingarh division. Animal health and rural security The animal husbandry and dairy department secured approval for procuring 220 lakh doses of the FMD+HS dual vaccine to prevent foot-and-mouth disease and haemorrhagic septicaemia in cattle. The programme, which helps maintain Haryana's current disease-free status, will cost ₹73.45 crore. The vaccine is administered statewide twice a year to prevent outbreaks and support livestock health, officials informed. Governance and oversight Ministers Mahipal Dhanda, Vipul Goyal, Shyam Singh Rana, Ranbir Gangwa, and Shruti Choudhry were present at the meeting where CM Saini directed departments to monitor progress closely and ensure time-bound project completion. "This is a crucial investment in urban resilience, public health, and energy infrastructure. Our goal is transparency, efficiency, and citizen-first delivery," Saini said following the approvals. Smart meters unlikely to cost less than Rs 1,000 in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: Amid the state govt's wish to avail benefits under the central govt-initiated Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), which mandates installation of smart meters at every installation, the energy department has clarified that cost of smart meters shall only be decided at the time of executing the project. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now They won't be available for less than Rs 1,000 despite the Centre's subsidy. Karnataka is one of the few states that hasn't availed RDSS till date. The beneficiary states will be provided 15% subsidy for installing smart meters and another 60% to improve transmission infrastructure. Last week, TOI sreported that with 15% subsidy, the cost of smart meters is likely to come down from Rs 5,000 to less than Rs 1,000. However, clarifying on the cost, the energy department said in a release that actual subsidy under RDSS is around Rs 900 or 15% of the life-cycle cost of the meter, including its cost and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) service charges. Even with the Centre's subsidy, the cost of smart meters will not come down to less than Rs 1,000. According to KERC norms, while consumers are required to bear the cost of meters, Escoms will manage AMI charges, which will be integrated with Bescom's IT systems. As RDSS deadline is Dec, energy minister KJ George said the state will consider opting for bulk replacement of smart meters if the Centre agrees to extend the deadline and relax some of the conditions under the scheme.

Electricity consumers in Coimbatore wait for new service connection for nearly nine months
Several applications for new electricity connections are said to be kept pending for want of distribution transformers in Coimbatore district. Consumer body, the Coimbatore Consumer Cause, has written to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) to direct the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation to provide the service connections on time. Secretary of the consumer body K. Kathirmathiyon claimed that applications were pending for more than nine months in Coimbatore district for new service connections. It is learnt that almost 140 distribution transformers were needed in Coimbatore alone to replace the old ones. He said that as per the Tamil Nadu Electricity Distribution Standards of Performance Regulations, 2004 , service connections should be given in 90 days for works involving extension and improvement. If the connections were not provided within the stipulated time, the licensee should pay the consumer a maximum of ₹2,000 for the delay period. However, if an application form was pending for 10 days or 400 days, the compensation amount was only ₹2,000 and that was the reason for the licensee to neglect the delays, he alleged. According to Mr. Kathirmathiyon, there are nearly '1,600 distribution transformers kept idle even now in the stores of the Licensee for years and left to gather dust. These DTs could not be used since they were allotted to the Central Government's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS),' he said. While there was a stock of transformers on one hand, consumers were waiting for new connections on the other because of non-availability of transformers, he said. 'Despite repeated orders, the licensee failed to provide connections within the time for want of equipment / materials – which are totally unacceptable,' he said.
